Academic Policies Maximum of 5.5 Course Units (CU) Per Term Recommended: Take 4 - 4.5 CU for Term 1 to adjust yourself to university life Term Duration 15 weeks Class Duration (per week) 3 hours 1.5 hours x 2 Class Registration Only through BOSS (Bidding On-line SyStem)
Time Management Class time: 12 - 15 hours / week Outside class time: ~ 24 – 35 hrs Group Projects Be careful of over-commitment! Allocate time wisely between work & CCA!
Academic Progress & Dean’s List In order to maintain satisfactory progress at SMU, students are expected to do the following: Maintain a minimum term GPA of 2.00 Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00, and Have no more than 2 “I” grades for the academic term First-year students should not take more than 5 course units during the first term. You may take up to 6.5 course units per term in subsequent terms provided you have maintained at least a cumulative GPA of 3.30 at the end of each term. Students are allowed to take additional courses beyond the required courses for their degree. The grades of the additional courses taken at SMU will be computed into the cumulative GPA.
Academic Progress & Dean’s List To qualify for a place on the Dean’s List, a student must meet the following requirements: Have a cumulative GPA of 3.70 or better over the 2 consecutive regular terms during one academic year (excluding Term 3), Have no grade lower than “C”, Have completed 3 or more course units for letter grades (grades that can be computed into GPA) in each regular term, and Have no “I” grades and no disciplinary action taken against you during the 2 consecutive regular terms. This will be noted on your transcript and you will receive a certificate noting your achievement.
Academic Standing Refer to OASIS > Academic > Examinations & Grading > Academic Standing The academic performance of each student is tracked based on his/her Term GPA as well as Cumulative GPA. Note: Government Tuition Grant is up to 4 years only.
Exemptions Given based on knowledge & proficiency Some of the Possible Exemptions include: Programme in Writing and Reasoning Calculus Introductory Economics General Education (GE)# Technology Studies (TS)* / Entrepreneurship (Ent)* Am I exempted? Do I need to apply? Exemptions are automatically updated in your records (refer to the Exemption Criteria published in the Matriculation website). Check from - OASIS - BOSS #Among all the General Electives, there is a compulsory module known as ‘Computer As An Analysis Tool’ (CAT), which can only be taken from year 2 onwards. If you already have 3 Exemptions for GE courses, you don’t need to take a 4th GE, as you must take CAT as your 4th GE module. *TS/Ent can be used to fulfill the Credit Unit requirement
First and Second Majors General Rule: All students MUST declare their First as well as Second (if any) Major or Major with Track within their first 4 regular terms of study (inclusive of term on leave of absence and/or external study programme such as international exchange programme). Please refer to OASIS > Academic > Programmes & Majors > Declaration or Change of Major or Major with Track for more info. For IS Major only: All IS Major students MUST declare their First Major, IS (Track): Information Systems (Business Analytics) Information Systems (Digital Business Solutioning) Information Systems (Financial Technology) Information Systems (Artificial Intelligence) Information Systems (Cybersecurity) Information Systems (Software Development) IS Tracks as a second major are applicable for IS Major students only. SMT Major students may declare Technology for Business (Solutions) track as their second Major.

Any time after the completion of year 2.
Community Service OASIS > Careers & Comm Service > Community Service Attend compulsory Dato’ Kho Hui Meng Career Centre (DKHMCC) talk on volunteerism before doing your community service attachment Minimum of 80 hours Can be done anytime during the course of study. Try to clear it early during Year 1 or 2. Submit a online report via OnTRAC II within one month after the completion of your attachment

Academic Integrity • Academic Dishonesty – any academic act that departs from fair, honest and diligent pursuit of knowledge; • Some examples of academic dishonesty: • Cheating : gaining unfair advantage • Plagiarism : use of other’s work without credit • Multiple Submissions • Fabrication : create or alter/falsify information
Plagiarism • Plagiarism is Theft and/or an act of Fraud! • Submitting a paper (or assignment) as your own, which contains 3rd-party ideas/material, and for which no proper citation or acknowledgement was given. • Using papers obtained from online papermills, other students or from any domain for personal submission. • Where in doubt, consult APA referencing guide or course instructor for proper referencing rules

NUS - Centralised Online Undergraduates Registration System (CORS) NTU - Student Automated Registration System (STARS) BOSS is the ONLY channel through which SMU students are to enrol for their courses. SMU Student Services Hub is organising a workshop on Tuesday, 31 July 2018, from 3pm to 4:30pm, where student peer advisors will be available to walk you through BOSS Bidding, OASIS and eLearn.
