Graduate Diploma of Teaching English to
Speakers of Other Languages
CRICOS Course Code: 096405G
Program Director Irma Kuci, BA, M.A. Applied Linguistics

 Introduction
ARI manages the Graduate Diploma of Teaching English to
Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). The award is
recognised as an international qualification for TESOL
teachers and teachers of languages and literacy. The program
is offered face-to-face, online and in mixed mode including as
intensive seminars. The Diploma is based on current research
on language learning. The Diploma engages students with the
theory and practice of text-based teaching in six subjects
including curriculum, research, assessment, methodology and
 evaluation.
                                                                                                     Mickan and Wallace 2020
The Diploma is designed as the professional qualification for primary, secondary and tertiary teachers of
language. The course introduces teachers and students to functional languages teaching which is an
evidence-based design for teaching with texts. The design challenges traditional language teaching methods
with the application of functional linguistics in the text-based model of teaching. Critical features of the course
are students’ placements in partner schools, practical teaching experiences and inquiry-based assignments with
documentation and analysis of data. Students receive study resources and have opportunities for individual
 consultations with lecturers.

 Course Aims, Content and Outcomes
The purpose of the course is for students to gain professional competence in TESOL for program planning,
teaching and assessment. The course supports students’ preparation, innovation and application of curriculum
and teaching practices adapted to different contexts. To achieve the qualification of Graduate Diploma of
Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, the students must complete six units of study and be
assessed as competent in all the units. For each unit of study students join in knowledge and skill building
tasks investigating aspects of language study and teaching.

 Credit Transfer and Pathways
Credit transfer of a full year has been negotiated for enrolment in the Masters of TESOL in Flinders
University and in the University of South Australia.

  Student testimonials

I started Graduate Diploma of TESOL as a qualified English educator with fourteen years of teaching
experience. The course equipped me with the knowledge of new teaching methodologies, such as
genre pedagogy and text-based approach, both of which apply Halliday’s Systemic Functional
Grammar. The programme has significantly transformed my attitude towards teaching a language
from a traditional, textbook-based approach into working with authentic, multimodal texts whose
lexico-grammatical features are set in context. Apart from extensive theoretical study, I had an
opportunity to develop advanced research skills and undertake a professional experience placement
comprising both in-classroom teacher observations as well as delivering my own lessons at an
Australian college. I highly recommend Graduate Diploma of TESOL at AIBT not only to prospective
English teachers but also to the experienced ones who would like to move up to the next level of their
  career.
                                                                                           - Kamila Kornet
AIBT Graduate Diploma of TESOL graduate

As an English teacher I wanted to further develop my skills as I began working predominately with
students learning English as a second language. I wanted to ensure that I was able to wholly support them
in understanding all the different features of English they would need in the classroom and in their daily
lives. The Graduate Diploma of TESOL, which applies Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics, has
provided me with a wealth of knowledge in my approach to teaching both English as an Additional
Language and English Literature. It has given me greater awareness and understanding of the grammar,
vocabulary and discourse structure of texts and to design language focused curriculum that further
support students in their literacy development. This course has also allowed me to better support my
colleagues who teach English language learners in their classroom and to give them the tools to design
curriculum that develops their knowledge and literacy. I highly recommend the Graduate Diploma in
TESOL at the Adelaide Research Institute to both prospective and experienced teachers wanting to
further develop their literacy teaching skills.

Language and Learning: Functional Linguistics across the Curriculum
In this seminar teachers study language in learning. The unit gives guided analysis of how teachers and students
develop content knowledge with spoken and written texts. Participants examine the texts and the selection of wording
or lexicogrammar which constitute subjects. The text analysis is based on functional linguistics and applied to
specific curriculum contexts. The unit is a practical foundation for the explicit teaching of texts to develop students’
language resources for the study of subjects. The unit is designed for primary, secondary and higher education
teachers who want to learn about current developments in language and literacy as part of a professional pathway in
education.

Design TESOL curriculum, lessons and materials (GDTDES802)
In this seminar students study the design of curriculum as the foundation for advanced study in teaching language.
The focus is on the development of skills and knowledge for the study and analysis of TESOL instruction in
classroom contexts. Students apply techniques to study effective instruction, analyse curriculum and textbooks,* and
evaluate teaching and testing programs. The subject applies to teaching languages in primary, secondary and tertiary
classes.
