2021 Partnerships You are invited to join the Mohawk Hudson Land Conservancy as a valued partner. About MHLC Today, across the Capital Region, natural lands and open spaces are being lost… forever. But the Mohawk Hudson Land Conservancy is fighting back! We have a vision of connecting the Catskill Mountains to the Adirondacks through a corridor of protected land, forever preserving the character of our region, protecting our food and water sources, fighting climate change, and providing green spaces for future generations. Land preservation is an investment in the future. Once we develop our natural areas, we cannot get them back. About your partnership MHLC at a glance Partnering with the Mohawk Hudson Land Conservancy offers SERVICE AREA: the opportunity to make a major impact on the preservation of Albany, Schenectady, and Montgomery counties open natural spaces right here in the Capital District. ACRES PROTECTED: 12,500+ acres We currently have projects underway that could result in the (3,000+ open to the public as preserves) permanent conservation of thousands of acres of working and natural lands in Albany, Schenectady, and Montgomery ANNUAL PRESERVE VISITATION: counties over the next few months. These landscapes represent 15,000+ visitors (20 preserves) a broad swath of properties resulting from our efforts to EMAIL DISTRIBUTION LIST: preserve working farmlands, wildlife habitat and stunning 3,600+ (12x annually) vistas, and the last remaining open spaces in the highly developed areas of our region. Annual Fall Fundraiser Thursday, September 30, 2021 The Annual Fall Fundraiser is Mohawk Hudson Land Conservancy’s largest and most-anticipated fundraiser of the year, attended by nearly 300 annually. Proceeds from the event raises money and awareness for the conservation of lands in Albany, Schenectady, and Montgomery counties. The 2021 Fall Fundraiser will feature an outdoor dinner reception at a private property with a view of the Helderberg Mountains. We are celebrating several amazing community members who have each contributed to our work. The honoree at the event is Len Tantillo, the acclaimed artist whose work focuses on historic events and views of our region. We will also recognize Ellie Prakken and John Smolinsky for their volunteer efforts on behalf of MHLC. And finally, Dennis O’Leary, the executive director of the Bioreserve, will receive our award for saving special places. Summer Hike-a-thon Scavenger Hunt Mohawk Hudson Land Conservancy is pleased to announce that the annual Summer Hike-a-thon Scavenger Hunt will be extended due to the popularity of 2020’s event. Beginning Saturday, July 17, and running through September 30, this year’s family friendly activity will feature gnome homes in each of MHLC’s preserves. The event has been one of our most popular events, with more than 500 participants. This self-guided activity will encourage visitors to visit all 20 of MHLC’s preserves. MHLC Outreach Events & Activities Each year, Mohawk Hudson Land Conservancy hosts various throughout our service area, led by subject matter experts with specific and thorough knowledge of the topic. These popular events are generally attended by up to 35-40 participants online, or within current limits for in-person activities. An average of 7 – 10 events and activities will take place. Your sponsorship will allow us to host the event at a reduced rate or as a free event. Themes for the 2021 focus on Get Creative with Nature, Health and Wellness in Nature, and our Explore and Learn Series. Events Planned for 2021 Get Creative with Nature Series Nature Explorer’s Sketchbook (2 classes) January 21 from 6-7:30 pm -virtual June 2021 in-person event (TBA) If you like exploring nature or drawing or both, this session is for you! Meet local artist and author of The Nature Explorer’s Sketchbook, Jean Mackay, ask questions, and draw along with Jean as she shares some activities and tips from her new book to spark your curiosity. Make Your Own Felt Nature Objects with artist Mallory Zondag Saturday, March 27, 10 am – 12 pm -virtual Learn how to sculpt with wool during this two-hour virtual workshop. You’ll learn the ancient and awesome art of wet felting to create a felted stone, vine and flower during class. Botanical Illustration with Carrie Stickan Sunday, September 5, 1 -3 pm at Normans Kill West Preserve Learn to capture the beauty of the natural world on paper. In this class we will draw/paint detailed plant portraits at the preserve. We will focus on techniques to achieve accuracy while emphasizing the identifying features of a specimen.
Events Planned for 2021 Health and Wellness in Nature Series Forest Therapy with Certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide Diane Kavanaugh-Black Sunday, August 15, 9 am -12 pm at Holt Preserve Enjoy a morning of healing and wellness at the Holt Preserve. Studies have demonstrated a wide array of health benefits, especially in the cardiovascular and immune systems, and for stabilizing and improving mood and cognition. Yoga in Nature with Hot Yoga Spot and MHLC Saturday, August 7 from 9 - 10 am at Hollyhock Hollow Sanctuary Enjoy the beauty and calming effects of nature during this outdoor yoga session. This class is designed for all levels of experience—beginners are welcome! Fitness Hike at Bennett Hill Saturday, September 11 from 10 -11:30 am at Bennett Hill Preserve Start your day with a workout in nature. Get your heart pumping on this fast-paced hike on the trails at Bennett Hill Preserve. Explore and Learn Series Stream Sampling Saturday, May 29 from 9-11 a.m. at the Bozen Kill Preserve Join Audubon Director of Center Programs and Education Eric Lind to explore what lives in the Bozen Kill. Participants will take samplings from the stream and discover the many species thriving in the stream. Amphibian Exploration at the Heldeberg Workshop Saturday, June 19 from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. Enjoy a family-friendly guided hike at the Heldeberg Workshop in the Town of New Scotland. Enjoy unique, scenic views of the Helderberg Escarpment from below as we search for red efts and other native amphibians. An Underground Adventure Sunday, August 29 starting at 10 am Join local professor Mike Nardacci on a hike through a wild cave near Gallupville, NY, featuring high passageways, an immense dome, and beautiful displays of calcite formations. Full Moon Hike at Strawberry Fields Nature Preserve Saturday, November 20 at 4 pm See the trails in a new light... moonlight! Join MHLC and educator Christian Johnson for a guided hike on the trails of Strawberry Fields Nautre Preserve under the full moon.
MHLC Preserve Stewardship Activities Each year, Mohawk Hudson Land Conservancy invites volunteers to assist in the maintenance and preservation of our 20 preserves. Volunteers spend time working to install bog boards, assist in invasive species abatement, and other activities that keep our preserves safe and open to the public.
