Build the Future Welcome to National Apprenticeship Week 2021! The 14th annual week-long celebration of apprenticeships, taking place across England, will showcase the impact apprenticeships can have on communities, local businesses and regional economies and how they all benefit from the impact of apprenticeships. To support National Apprenticeship Week 2021, individuals, employers, training providers and communities are being encouraged to get involved, to celebrate apprenticeships and how they: TRAIN apprentices, and future proof their workforce and careers though apprenticeships; RETAIN apprentices, gaining the skills and knowledge needed by the business, and seeing apprentices thrive, whilst having impact; ACHIEVE a real return on investment from apprentices; realising the business benefits of apprenticeships, with apprentices progressing in their chosen careers. Havering Apprenticeship Case Studies Tanya Eastwood | Business Administration Apprentice Level 3 | London Borough of Havering | Education Provision & Commissioning I would really recommend undertaking an apprenticeship if you are new to the world of work, if you are uncertain of what career you want to pursue in the future, or if you are looking to develop your confidence in the workplace. Since starting my apprenticeship with LBH, I have learnt a range of new transferable skills that I can now take to any job, regardless of the sector it may be. I have learnt how to communicate confidently and effectively with internal and external colleagues in order to achieve goals and deadlines, which has also majorly improved my general confidence in day to day life. I have learnt how to better manage my time keeping and task management. I am also now confident using Microsoft Outlook to send emails and arrange meetings, as well as recording minutes from meetings and creating agendas for meetings. Throughout my apprenticeship, all of my colleagues have been extremely supportive to me and have taken the time to demonstrate and explain anything I have been unsure on. My team has been very inclusive to me and has provided me opportunities to really thrive, such as taking on the role of supporting LBH maintained primary schools with spending and utilising their Apprenticeship Levy funding. Steven Newberry | Case Officer | SENDIASS | Former Business Admin Apprentice Level 2 Special Educational Needs and Disability Information Advice & Support Service When I received my GCSE results, I was unsure on my next steps, as it was a tough decision to pinpoint which career path I wanted to pursue. However, I knew that I wanted a career connected to Education, but it was extremely difficult to land a job, as nowadays everyone wants candidates with experience. By starting an apprenticeship, I could enter into an industry with no experience. The Apprenticeship allowed me to get my foot in the door and on the career ladder. I was able to learn everything it had to offer, I was able to liaise with other internal teams within the council and build up a professional network. Being able to earn a wage and learn at the same time was a great plus and I was entitled to holiday pay. I joined Havering Council as a Business Administration Apprentice; their scheme gave me plenty of opportunities to develop my skill set and enabled me to gain a Level 2 Certificate in Business Administration that led me to a full time career. Since finishing my apprenticeship I have undertaken further qualification and am now an IPSEA Qualified SEN Legal Adviser working for Havering School Improvement Services
Katie Paraboo| Events Assistant |The Royal College of Nursing | Former Business Admin Apprentice Level 3 Originally, I hadn’t chosen the apprenticeship route but focused on musical theatre and got into Havering College, but had to give up due to an injury. I then went to college and studied business, communication studies and ICT, which made business admin appeal to me. University did not appeal to me because of the debt and I didn’t like the classroom environment. So I applied for an apprenticeship, as I liked the thought of earning whilst I was learning. I wanted to learn more about how a business actually works e.g. the policies a business would have and how they apply it, how businesses work with each other and how to develop and maintain professional relationships. It was very important to me to be independent, as I never wanted to worry about having to pay back a large loan. I was able to pay for my busy social life as well as vital everyday payments without help from my parents. I learned how to manage my money at a young age and was able to make my own decisions regarding how I spend it. As soon as I assisted with my first RPA event, alongside the team, I knew I wanted to go into the Events and Marketing industry. I was so inspired by how events were set up and enjoyed being a part of the planning and implementation of them. My manager was really supportive with this and eventually I started planning events more independently. I found it very hard to find a job in this sector, as it was so competitive. The whole department, especially my team, was really helpful and supported me anyway they could. I finally landed a job with the Royal College of Nursing as an events assistant. Being an apprentice really helped me build my confidence and enabled me to realise what I wanted to do for my career. Chloe Maher | Apprentice | London Borough of Havering | SENDIASS Team | Former Level 3 Certificate in Business Administration When I left school, I had little to no idea of what I wanted to do or where I wanted to go. This continued throughout my college years and followed me with a daunting thought at the back of my head, “what am I going to do next?” The only thing I knew was that I wanted to work in a way that would allow me to help others and impact positively on people’s lives. It was at this point that I was told by a teacher my only options were university or to get a job. So I planned on going to university and to work part-time to help with the costs. As I was looking online, I discovered an apprenticeship scheme within Havering Council, which immediately drew my attention, as I would be able to help others, whilst gaining work experience and still work towards a qualification. I began an apprenticeship for the London Borough of Havering in the SENDIASS team that provides advice and support to young people with special educational needs & disabilities and their parents/carers. It was the perfect route for me to continue with my education in a way that I was comfortable in as well as something I was interested in. I have now successfully completed my apprenticeship and am now working as a Business Support Officer for the Local Authority in Adult Social Care.
