The Rices wrote the book on divorce. Literally. The Complete Guide to Divorce Practice is published by the American Bar Association and is recognized as the standard reference for divorce lawyers across the nation for decades. For the 30th Anniversary Edition, the Rices co-author their book with over a thousand pages of insight, experience, and techniques. Lawyers seek out Larry’s expertise and he has lectured on divorce in most states and in some foreign countries. As the only Super Lawyer in the Mid-South certified as a Family Law Specialist, Larry Rice spends most of his time practicing law with the Rice Divorce Team. Thomson Reuters repeatedly ranks Mr. Rice as one of the top 100 lawyers in all fields of law in Tennessee. Larry received The National Academy of Family Attorneys Top Ten Attorney Client Satisfaction Award and is rated on AVVO as 10 out of 10. Nick Rice grew up with the law. After graduating from CBHS and UT-Knoxville, Nick clerked while attending The University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law. Nick has lectured on several occasions and was recognized as one of Super Lawyers’ Rising Stars. Nick is rated on AVVO as 10 out of 10. He is a Rule 31 Family Law Mediator. The Rice Divorce Team is a practice group within Rice, Amundsen & Caperton, PLLC. The Rice Divorce Team is exclusively commit- ted to family law - from prenuptial agreements to final decrees, from parenting time to property division and everything in between, and it includes: Larry Rice; Nick Rice; Erin O’Dea; Jessica Farmer Ferrante; Chelsea Knox; Faith Sanford; Christopher Burt; Jennifer Goodin; Andrea Schultz, ACP; Susan New, ACP; Tyler Walker; Cyndy McAfee; Lisa Blackledge; Krista Burt; Ken Schultz; Linsey Boatner; C.J. Parrish; Irris Williams and Blake Alford. The team applies generations of legal experience, nationally recognized expertise, and up-to-date technology to lead their clients through negotiations, mediation, arbitration or litigation. The depth of The Rice Divorce Team’s personnel provides the ability to tailor representation to each client’s individual needs and goals. While the team is proud of courtroom success, their greatest satisfaction often comes from obtaining a quick and quiet settle- ment favorable to their client. Divorce is difficult. Divorce is made worse by misinformation people have about divorce. Cecilia Walker & Matthew HeffingtonOCTOBER 16, 2020 C ecilia Lona Walker and Matthew Curtis Heffington hosted a small, enchanting wedding on the beautiful British island of Bermuda October, 2020. With a global pandemic and safety precautions in mind, the couple was relieved that their locale of choice had only two Covid-19 cases and required pre-flight testing, airport arrival testing and quarantining before the festivities would commence. The sophisticated island, a favorite of the Walker Family, welcomed 30 friends and family members with a “In Love and Lost in the Bermuda Triangle” themed rehearsal dinner on the Beach Terrace of the Coral Beach & Tennis Club. Guests enjoyed the ocean views, the draped orchids and greenery, Dark ’n Stormies and toasts that went on into the night. The next day, the wedding took place at the stoic and historical Unfinished Church - a gothic vestige built in the 1800s ravaged by fires. The storied building is one of Bermuda’s most alluring ruins filled with white roses, golden urns and palms for the special day. The bride was walked down the aisle by her older brother, Deloss Walker, to a live string quartet playing Andrea Bocelli’s “The Prayer.” The bride and groom rode back in a 1939 Ford to their cliffside reception on Longtail Terrace at the Coral Beach & Tennis Club. The guests sat under the stars listening to the crashing waves and dining on delicious local eats surrounded by red ranunculus and roses, beautiful candelabras and chandeliers. The bride donned several outfit changes dancing with her groom to Duke Ellington’s "Jeep’s Blues.” The love and excitement carried into the night ending with a unique keepsake for guests to take home - a piece of original art created by French artist, Jean-Paul Jacquet. The mural was a beautiful 6 ft x 4 ft tale of the couple’s relationship, traveling adventures and nostalgic mementos. The following day, the entire wedding party boarded a sleek 77-ft yacht named the Zara and sailed the Atlantic. After the sail, guests convened for the final event - a beach bonfire with s’mores and champagne. The couple hopes to have a larger, more inclusive celebration of their marriage when life normalizes. 26 | 4memphis.com | JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2021

Selden Humphreys & Erim Sarinoglu SEPTEMBER 26, 2020 P lanning a wedding during COVID proved to be challenging to say the least. Erim and I first met back in high school during our senior trip to the Bahamas. We definitely noticed each other, but mostly from afar. We each knew that we were both heading to Washington, DC for college, but ended up only running into each other once during our time there. Fast forward a few years later, we were both back in Memphis. We reconnected on Bumble, went on a date and were inseparable ever since! It all came full circle during a trip to London in January 2020 when Erim popped the question on the London Eye, the giant Ferris wheel that overlooks the breathtaking city. We immediately got to work planning a beautiful, 500 people reception for September. Then, the news of COVID soon hit and we were thrown for a loop. We hoped the situation would be short-lived, but despite our best attempts to uninvite the pandemic from the wedding, she persisted. Even with COVID, Erim and I knew we wanted to proceed with the date. We were ready to start the next chapter in our lives together and didn’t want something out of our control ruining this moment for us. Consequently, like most couples planning a wedding during this time – we sprang into action to navigate this ever-evolving situation to keep our friends and family safe. We cut the guestlist by 80%, moved the entire event to my parents’ home to keep everything outside, administered temperature checks, handed out masks to our guests and did everything else in our power to make sure our guests felt safe. COVID certainly forced us to get creative, and in the process, we managed to turn a less than hopeful situation like this into such a memorable and intimate wedding! While it was heartbreaking not to have everyone we wanted there, we remained positive and focused on the thing that meant most – our marriage. We were still surrounded by our closest friends and family, which truly made our wedding so special. While the day wasn’t like we originally planned, it was absolutely perfect. -Selden 30 | 4memphis.com | JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2021

Catherine Norton & Nathan Simpson SEPTEMBER 19, 2020 O ur wedding was originally scheduled for April 18, 2020, possibly the peak of the pandemic in Shelby County. One month before the wedding, the CDC issued guidance that social gatherings were limited to 10 people. Thinking a six-month delay would be sufficient, we postponed our “big” wedding celebration to September 19, 2020. Nathan and I were determined to still get married on our original date, but with the Shelby County Clerk’s office closed since March, our determination led us to Fayette County, where we were able to finally get our marriage license. We had an intimate ceremony with just our parents and Nathan’s siblings, which was incredibly special. We were excited to have our “I Do, Re-Do” with more family and friends on September 19, 2020. We took numerous precautions to ensure the safety of our guests. Masks were required and guests were seated at least six feet apart on every other row in Christ Methodist’s sanctuary. We moved our reception to the spacious Columns to allow for abundant social distancing, and we provided customized masks and personal hand sanitizers for each guest. We also live-streamed the ceremony and first dance for guests who could not attend in person. Despite the unconventional circumstances surrounding our wedding, we tried to incorporate several wedding traditions. For my “something old,” my mom surprised me with a purse made from her wedding dress; my “something new” was a mask that matched my wedding dress; my “something borrowed” was a pair of my mom’s pearl and diamond drop earrings; my “something blue” was the blue and white chinoiserie theme used throughout our reception. With the help of my mom, our incredible wedding planner, and our team of vendors, the wedding was more spectacular than I ever could have imagined! -Catherine 32 | 4memphis.com | JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2021

Katie Walker & Adam Pike SEPTEMBER 19, 2020 A dam and I met our freshmen year of high school during our first period class, but didn’t start dating until our senior year. When choosing colleges to attend, I decided on Mississippi State University while Adam went to Austin Peay State University to play basketball. After a year of dating long-distance, we both decided to come back home and attend the University of Memphis during the fall of 2016. Fast forward to 2020, Adam is a high school history teacher and basketball coach at Briarcrest (where we met), and I’m working with dogs everyday at Whippoorwill Farms Dog Retreat (WWF). Once Adam and I were engaged, deciding on a venue was the easiest part of the wedding planning process. I always knew that I wanted to get married at the farm. I spent every weekend hanging on the farm and Adam quickly grew to love it as we spent all the time we could there. We chose September 19th for our wedding date, and the day could not have been more perfect. The ceremony and reception were both outside, overlooking our lake, which made it an awesome (and safe) venue for a 2020 wedding. No better way to start a new chapter in our lives than getting married in the place that means the most to us! -Katie Wedding Cake: Piece of Cake Wedding Dress: Maggie Louise Makeup: Beauty by Leigh Downing Hair Stylist: Annie Shackleford Photographer: Whit Photography Caterer: A Moveable Feast and Hog Wild Catering Florist: Deedra Stone Designs 34 | 4memphis.com | JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2021
Where a Dog Can Be a Dog: Whippoorwill Farms Dog Retreat P ets are our furry family, and Whippoorwill Farms Dog Retreat is the best place ever to treat your dog! It’s a cross between summer camp and boarding school for pups. Located 30 minutes east of Collierville, Whippoorwill Farms Dog Retreat (WWF) is the place of doggy dreams. Katie Walker Pike is a life-long dog- person and in 2018, she founded WWF. “I pursued my passion for dogs and started my own doggy-daycare/boarding facility, Whippoorwill Farms Dog Retreat,” Katie said. “WWF is located on my family farm where the pups have all the room they need to run, play, and swim in our beautiful lake.” High-energy pups have lots of wide- open space for running; water dogs have a pond for swimming; and there are dozens of balls to chase - and people to throw them. WWF offers pick-up and drop-off for their dog guests included in their fee. Midtown and Downtown pick-ups available for a minimal charge. And what would a retreat be without a little pampering? After a full day of doggy play, bathing services are also available. Follow them on Instagram and Facebook @whippoorwillfarmsdogretreat and see all the happy dogs having the time of their lives... and Katie too! JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2021 | 4memphis.com | 35
Beauty To Do’s Before Saying “I DO” E verybody needs pampering before the special day, whether you are the mother of the bride, member of the bridal party, and especially the bride! We are fortunate to have many day spas throughout the city that offer such services for brides to look and feel their best before the big day. We chatted with Eden Spa & Laser, one of the premier spas in Memphis, for ideas and services for the bride and the bridal party to get wedding ready! Eden Spa offers several options to be “bride beautiful”, namely custom facials, laser treatments, spray tans, and hair styling. Typically, it is good to start a skincare regimen a few months before the wedding day to see the best results. Laser treatments can be done in combination with facials to get rid of brown and red spots. If aging, acne, or too much time in the sun has left your face less than perfect with blotches, wrinkles, or lines, laser skin resurfacing may help your skin look younger and healthier. Laser resurfacing is a treatment that reduces facial wrinkles and skin irregularities, such as blemishes or acne scars. The technique directs short, concentrated pulsating beams of light at irregular skin, removing skin layer by layer with precision. Closer to the wedding date and for an immediate glow, Eden recommends Oxygen facials the week of the wedding. Oxygen facials just may be the perfect solution to glowing skin, as it nourishes and revitalizes every cell of the skin pore by pore. The facial consists of cleansing, extractions, steam, and massage, and pure oxygen along with vitamin A, C, and E, and 87 different minerals. The result of radiant and hydrated skin is seen immediately following the facial. Other benefits of Oxygen facials range from thorough pore cleansing to lightened hyperpigmentation, improve blood circulation and promote collagen production for younger looking skin. Oxygen may also strengthen skin's elasticity and help eliminate acne-causing bacteria, as well as reduce fine lines and wrinkles, even out skin tone, and diminish pores. Another way to achieve a nice glow, especially this time of the year, is with a spray tan. Eden offers custom spray tanning. The spa’s custom spray tan artist uses advanced technology and an all-natural, anti-aging sunless tanner made with antioxidants and pure botanicals to leave skin radiant with a natural-looking color. It’s a quick, easy and damage free way to get a beautiful tan. Infinity sun spray tans that are based on your skin tone are highly recommended, especially for a winter wedding when you don’t want to look too dark. Several non-surgical facial rejuvenation options are Botox® or injectables for the lips, frown lines and crow’s feet around the eyes. It is recommended to schedule a complimentary consultation with one of the Eden nurses well in advance of the wedding date. Botox Cosmetic is a quick,minimally-invasive procedure consisting of a few tiny injections for relaxing lines, crow’s feet, and wrinkles. Results may be noticed within 24 to 48 hours, and last up to 4 months for moderate to severe frown lines. Juvederm is a smooth, gel filler that instantly smoothes away wrinkles around the mouth and nose, and just one treatment yields natural-looking results that can last up to a year. As for hair, Eden offers pre-wedding color, cuts, and up do’s for the bride and bridal parties. And to wind down from wedding stress, Eden recommends a massage the week of the wedding. Ahhhh, just what every bride (and groom) needs! Complimentary consultations are available for all services at Eden Spa & Laser. Another service for bride’s planning weddings these days may be Covid-19 testing. Eden, in partnership with East Memphis Direct Primary Care conveniently located directly next to Eden, now offers the Covid-19 rapid test. The Wedding Prepare to Entertain! When people sit in front of a screen, they expect to be entertained. Fear not. Think of it like a wedding strapped on top of a bunch of short skits with lots of great crowd reactions. Your Agenda Script Write out a script to get an idea of who says what when. People will turn it into their own but they need a starting point. This will also help you get an idea of wedding length. Shoot for no more than 30 minutes for the wedding and 2 hours max for the entire event. Instruction + Tech Support Okay, this one may be overkill but it helped our guests. Drop an agenda and a few easy to read instructions in the mail. Your guests will thank you for the instruction manual. Not everyone is living their work lives on Zoom calls. And, grandma has no idea what you're talking about. Make it easy for the newbies and the pro's among your invitees. Add Something Physical Okay, we've been pretty digital this entire time but let's find something memorable. It's a special day. Let's make sure the special feeling comes through on both sides of the screen. Send some swag in a pre- wedding mailing along with instructions, the agenda, and other wedding day details. Print some stickers or make temporary tattoos with Inkbox.com to spice it up a little. Digital events need physical objects to tie emotion and, as a result, memories to an event. Your Guest Book Buy a stack of plain artist postcards and send them to your guests in the pre-wedding mailing along with a handful of colored pencils. We had an Art Brunch after the wedding. Pre-address the postcards and add a cool stamp so guests can just drop them in the mail. These postcards are your first wedding memories. I promise you'll love the diversity in what you'll get back. This is a sampling of our Art Brunch postcards. It's really fun to see the artist in everyone. Guest Photographers Your guests are your photographers. Ask them to take screenshots and selfies of their zoom. Capture their surroundings. Capture their experience. Your wedding is literally everywhere. Pretty cool, right? Pro tip: Make sure to set your Zoom event settings to automatically record to the cloud to capture you and all of your wedding party and guest interactions. As the wedding couple, plan to record your video stream locally to your computer, as well. This will ensure you have the highest quality video and audio coming from all that sweet gear you just bought. Use Quicktime on your Mac or VLC on your desktop.
The reception Wait! Don't forget an Intermission. Planning a two-hour event takes a lot but imagine being the stars of the show, live on-screen with a hot mic for all 2 hours. Bad idea. After your Officiant introduces you to the crowd as Mr. & Mrs., walk down your aisle towards your video setup. Then turn off the mic. Turn off the camera. Take a 15-minute Intermission. Tell your partner you love them. Enjoy the moment. After intermission, jump back on screen with your guests for your reception. Which brings up the next item: Dinner Tables. How To Create This Masterful Cheeseboard Gather cheeses, accoutrement, and any garnishes (optional). Vary pairings in texture: juicy, sweet, crunchy, salty, or acidic. Cut cheese to have long, broad pieces, not cubes - have maximum surface area for tasting. Pro tip: Cheese should be eaten at room temp but is easier to cut when it is cold. Slice cheese straight from the fridge, then plate it as it rises to room temp. For Love of Cheese: Plate each of the cheeses. Find an attractive way to stack each cheese so that a piece can be easily grabbed without disturbing other pieces. The Greys Fine Cheeses & Entertaining cheeses should be a “step-up” in flavor between the first and third cheeses.
