DEAR LIBRARY SUPPORTERS, As a lifelong supporter of literacy and education, I am honored to serve as President of the Long Beach Public Library Foundation for 2021. This year marks two important anniversaries—the Library Foundation’s 25th and the Long Beach Public Library’s 125th year of service to the Long Beach community. We invite you to celebrate these milestones throughout the year with us as we rally support for our nationally recognized Library. 2020 was an incredibly challenging year for all of Long Beach, but the Library continued to provide crucial resources to those who depend upon its services. Following the temporary closure of the City’s 12 public libraries in mid- March, the Library quickly pivoted to a contactless pick-up service of library materials and providing services through a wide array of online resources. Thanks to donations of all sizes, the Library Foundation has funded virtual literacy programs for readers at all levels and of all ages, one-on-one online homework help and job search support, scholarships for adults earning their accredited high school diploma online, e-books and audiobooks that promote equity, and new technology. The Library Foundation provides key funding to the Library as it serves on the front lines of our city’s most pressing issues, including resources that bridge educational, digital, economic, and cultural divides. As the 12 Long Beach public libraries begin reopening, we know that more families, students, job seekers, veterans, older patrons, and those with disabilities will need their resources more than ever before. We depend upon the support of those who are able to donate to help us keep library resources widely available for the many who urgently need them. We look forward to commemorating this momentous year with you and celebrating Long Beach’s incredible libraries, librarians, library staff, and avid library patrons. Happy reading, M. 2020 HIGHLIGHTS LIBRARY FOUNDATION SUPPORTED PROGRAMS AND RESOURCES Photos: Long Beach Public Library FLC Program Proves it’s Value During the Pandemic The Library Foundation-funded Family Learning Center program continued through the pandemic thanks to its online programs, Brainfuse HelpNow and JobNow. These online resources provide live one-on-one guidance to students and job seekers. Individualized support is crucial to families who have faced the challenges of distance learning and record unemployment. Popular Library Programs Go Virtual The Library offered online versions of their Summer Reading Program and the early literacy Dive into Reading program in 2020, thanks to the virtual Beanstack platform. The Library Foundation was proud to fund Beanstack, which allows the Library to provide reading trackers to all registered users and host games and challenges in English and Spanish. Funding was also provided for take home craft kits and prizes for these programs. Fund for Race, Equity, and Justice Resources In partnership with the African American Heritage Society of Long Beach, the Library Foundation launched this new fund in June of 2020. The Fund for Race, Equity, and Justice Resources has already allowed the Library to purchase hundreds of eBooks and audiobooks that promote the voices, narratives, and histories of African Americans and educate the public on the origins of white privilege, white supremacy, mass incarceration, and other forms of institutional racism. The Makerspace Studio Partners with LBUSD The Library’s makerspace Studio programs have kept students learning and engaged with online STEAM educational workshops supported by the Library Foundation. The Library’s “Make.Create.Design” summer program for students in grades 7 through 12 used free design software to teach students how to build video games from scratch. The Library also partnered with the Long Beach Unified School District to virtually teach video game design and 3D design to hundreds of middle and high school students. Adults Earn Their High School Diploma Students in the Library’s Career Online High School are progressing in their lessons to earn their accredited high school diplomas and become more competitive candidates in the workforce. The Library Foundation made this program possible by providing scholarships to students. In 2020, 36 students participated in the program and 13 graduated by the end of the year.
BJK MAIN LIBRARY’S FIRST YEAR “ From left: Vice Mayor Rex Richardson, Billie Jean King, It’s an honor to see what a difference Councilman Daryl Supernaw, Mayor Robert Garcia, and the library is making in Long Beach Congressman Alan Lowenthal at the BJK Main Library grand opening. and I hope it continues to improve “ and enrich the lives of those in our community for years to come. -Billie Jean King On September 21, 2020, the one-year anniversary of the grand opening of the Billie Jean King Main Library, the Library Foundation announced the completion of the New Main Campaign and more than $3.3 million raised for technology, programs, and enhancements at the City’s newest library. Nearly 500 community members, book clubs, foundations, and local organizations contributed gifts of all sizes—from $25 and up—to the most successful fundraising campaign in the Library Foundation’s history. The new Main Library’s first year of operation was one of overcoming adversity. After six great months of providing educational resources in-person to thousands of visitors, the Main Library, along with the City’s 11 neighborhood branches, temporarily closed to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The Main Library serves as the central hub for the Library system as it launched a contactless pick- up service of library materials and created online versions of its popular educational programs. The Main Library’s Family Learning Center served as the home base for the City’s new Digital Inclusion Resources Hotline staffed by the FLC’s Learning Guides, who guided callers on computer use and low-cost Internet services in English and Spanish. The Main Library also served as the setting for the many fantastic storytime and educational workshop videos the incredible librarians filmed and posted online to keep readers learning and engaged during the Library’s temporary closure. As the Main Library reopens and resumes providing in-person services, it will continue being a premier center of public education and community building that welcomes all who wish to learn. WRITE YOUR LEGACY Do books play a special role in your life? Do you have fond memories of going to the library? Then the library is already part of your legacy. Make it official with a planned gift to the Long Beach Public Library Foundation that will ensure generations of children and families will build a lifelong love of reading. For 25 years, the Library Foundation has raised funds to support free library resources, programs, and services at all 12 of Long Beach’s public libraries thanks to supporters like you. No matter the size, your gift will ensure these services are available to those who need them. In addition to supporting the Library, gifts may benefit donors by easing tax burdens. We appreciate: ◊ Gifts of Cash ◊ Bequests If you have any questions about including the Library ◊ Gifts of Stock Foundation in your charitable giving plans or estate planning, ◊ IRA charitable rollovers please contact Erica Bradley, Director of Development. ◊ Charitable Remainder Trusts Erica@LBPLfoundation.org · (562) 628-2441 x2 ◊ Charitable Lead Trusts The IRA charitable rollover allows taxpayers over 70½ to make tax-free charitable gifts directly from their Individual Retirement Accounts. A Charitable Remainder Trust (CRT) can be established to generate an income stream for you or other beneficiaries, with the remainder of the donated assets going to the Library Foundation. This charitable giving strategy can enable you to pursue your philanthropic goals while generating income that may help provide for living expenses in retirement. A Charitable Lead Trust (CLT) can be designed to provide financial support to the Library Foundation for a period of time, with the remaining assets eventually going to family members or other beneficiaries. It may reduce a beneficiary’s potential tax liability upon inheritance. CRTs and CLTs can be established with cash, stock or non-publicly traded assets such as real estate, private business interests, and private company stock and may be eligible for a partial tax deduction. Exiting your business? Selling your home? A Charitable Gift Plan may help to ease your tax burden. We will work with your financial advisor to find the right charitable giving strategy. We strongly encourage you to consult your tax preparer and estate attorney, who will advise you on the specifics of your strategy. If you don’t have an estate attorney, you may consult the membership directory of The Estate Planning and Trust Council of Long Beach at www.eptclb.org.* *The Library Foundation does not endorse any specific estate planning attorneys. Endowed Funds: Those who contribute to one of the Library Foundation’s endowed funds combine their gifts with the earning power of our nearly $9 million investment portfolio, maximizing their impact and ensuring that their gifts benefit the community for generations to come. Gifts of all sizes are appreciated and a named endowed fund can be established with a gift of $25,000 or more. The Gutenberg Society is made up of donors of $1,000 or more to this endowed fund. Each year, the earnings on the investments are spent on purchasing books on the Library’s wish lists. All books purchased as a result of your donation will include a book plaque recognizing you and your honoree for your gift Celebrate Your Legacy Gift with Fellow Library Supporters! Our Carnegie49 legacy society honors those who care deeply about the future of Long Beach’s public libraries and name the Library Foundation as a beneficiary of their estate. The society is named after Andrew Carnegie because of his generous work spreading literacy across the country by building libraries from New York to California. His library in Long Beach was the 49th Carnegie library in the state. Carnegie championed the value of literacy and equal access to educational resources for everyone. The members of our Carnegie49 society are committed to carrying on those values for generations to come. Carnegie49 members are recognized in the Library Foundation’s newsletter and website, and receive invitations to an annual recognition event and special library gatherings.
