2 0 2 0 FVCC Board of Trustees RISING ABOVE Shannon Lund, Pete Akey Patrick Gulick Mark Holston Callie Langohr Lyle Mitchell Kelly Dowling Chair Stimpson Flathead Valley Community College promotes excellence in lifelong learning, focused on student success and community needs. This has been a year like no other. Flathead Valley Community College continued to be a resource for the community by adapting to overcome the challenges of a pandemic. We have continued to provide accessible education and workforce training to meet the many needs of our students and community. In this report, you will see how faculty stepped up to make learning possible during quarantines, how staff were able to provide much needed support to our students and community, and how our students achieved their dreams through higher education. Throughout this year, Flathead Valley Community College served our community through workforce training, transfer programs, apprenticeships, and continuing education. Despite the unprecedented challenges of a global pandemic, our faculty and staff focused on our mission of serving our students and community. I especially want to thank you, our community, for all of your continued support to make Flathead Valley Community College an outstanding college. It has been my honor to serve you this year, working with our outstanding faculty, staff and community to provide education and training to support our economy. Together, we will continue to ‘rise above.’ Warm regards, Jane A. Karas, Ph.D. 2 0 2 0 President, Flathead Valley Community College RISING ABOVE FVCC PRESIDENT’S REPORT 3
LOOKING BACK AT 2020 2O2O was a year like no other at FVCC. Who could have imagined one year ago that students would perform concerts without an audience or that faculty would become experts at conducting virtual courses? Phrases like social distancing, remote learning and PPE were anything but household terms as we celebrated the coming of the new decade. This year was proof that our campus community and our students know the power of higher education and will strive toward providing or accessing education in any circumstances. At FVCC, we are rising above. FVCC celebrated its 52nd annual commencement on May 15, 2020 with an online ceremony to recognize 339 graduates who earned a combined 370 degrees and certificates. FVCC recognized 21 graduates of the Associate of Science Nursing program in virtual pinning ceremonies. 2 0 2 0 RISING ABOVE 4 FVCC PRESIDENT’S REPORT FVCC PRESIDENT’S REPORT 5

Rising to help others COMMUNITY OUTREACH A few weeks after Montana closed down restaurants, stores, gyms and schools to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in March, FVCC Culinary Arts instructor Dan Moe was inspired to do something to help community members who were losing their jobs as a result of business closures. By early April, FVCC had transitioned from in-person to online instruction to protect the health and well-being of students and staff. “Our instructional kitchen was sitting empty, and I wondered if it were possible to get in there and start baking bread for the food banks,” Dan said. He connected with FVCC Campus Farm Manager Dane Regan to acquire freshly milled whole-grain flour, some of which was produced from wheat grown by students last summer. Dan put his culinary students to work converting a recipe for a single loaf of whole-grain bread into a recipe for multiple loaves. Meanwhile, students enrolled in the Building Community Food Systems course helped create nutritional information labels and identified area food banks that could distribute the bread to people in need. And then Dan started baking. Over the next five weeks, he baked 850 loaves of delicious, nutritious bread for the North Valley Food Bank and the FVCC Student Food Pantry. Although 2020 will go down in the history books as a remarkably difficult year for many people, it will also be noted as a year when people came together to support each other. For some residents of Northwest Montana, Dan’s bread was undoubtedly a bright spot during a dark time. 2 2 0 0 2 2 0 0 RISING RISING ABOVE ABOVE 8 FVCC PRESIDENT’S REPORT FVCC PRESIDENT’S REPORT 9
