Message from the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario June 8, 2019 The importance of empathy and inclusion cannot be overstated in these changing and often uncertain times. The Hong Fook Mental Health Foundation has, for nearly 40 years, been an exceptional source of guidance in serving members of the East and Southeast Asian communities living in the Greater Toronto Area. Through an integrated approach to wellbeing, and the provision of culturally and linguistically appropriate care, the foundation and its supporters have built a more resilient and caring society, enriching the lives of countless patients and their families. This comes with my best wishes for an enjoyable celebration of such a proud legacy. Elizabeth Dowdeswell 6
Message from the Premier of Ontario Premier of Ontario - Premier ministre de l’Ontario June 8, 2019 A MESSAGE FROM PREMIER DOUG FORD I’m delighted to extend greetings to everyone attending the 2019 Hong Fook Gala, hosted by the Hong Fook Mental Health Foundation. I’d like to commend the Hong Fook Mental Health Association for its 37 years of dedication to providing culturally and linguistically appropriate community-based mental health services to members of the Cambodian, Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese communities. My thanks also go out to everyone at the Hong Fook Mental Health Foundation for their tireless support of the association’s programs and services. Our government believes it’s time to take the mental health of our young people, adults and families as seriously as their physical health. We are committed to working closely with frontline care providers and stakeholders to ensure that Ontarians get the mental health care they need. Over 10 years, we will invest $1.9 billion, matched by a federal investment, to make $3.8 billion available to support Ontarians in the areas of mental health, addictions and housing. We all have a part to play in reducing the stigma around mental health and making sure everyone — all Ontarians — have access to services they need. I’d also like to acknowledge everyone who has turned out to support this gala evening of fundraising. Thanks to your generosity, Ontarians will be able to benefit from the supportive and caring environment offered by Hong Fook’s youth program. Best wishes for an enjoyable and successful gala. Doug Ford Premier 7

Message from the Association President I am pleased to welcome everyone attending the Hong Fook Mental Health Foundation’s Annual Gala and to thank the countless volunteers who made this event possible. Your generous support is the true foundation of Hong Fook’s work. This year, we celebrate “Journey of Hope” as the theme of the Gala. This is all the more timely given the recent announcement from the provincial government to reform the health care system in Ontario. Under the newly proposed system, health care providers will come together to form Health Care Teams to deliver more client-focused integrated care for individuals. As a mental health service and program delivery organization, Hong Fook is in the position to play an impactful role in the future model of healthcare in Ontario. Already, the important work of positioning the Association has begun. The Association’s leadership team has been holding regular meetings with health care providers and various stakeholders to ensure that culturally competent mental health care is accessible to all those who need it under the new system. I also wish to take this opportunity to highlight and congratulate the staff and volunteers of the Association for receiving international recognition for their work. Last month, Hong Fook Mental Health Association received the American Psychiatric Association Foundation Award for Advancing Minority Mental Health for 2019, marking the first time this prestigious award was given to a community-based mental health organization outside the United States! In closing, I wish to thank the Gala organizers and volunteers, the staff and the leadership team at Hong Fook, and donors like you who continue to walk with us in our Journey of Hope. Sincerely, John Joon Suk Park President, Hong Fook Mental Health Association Vice Presidents: Charles Xie, Grace Kangmeehae Lee Treasurer: Peter Lee Secretary: Sherman Hui Directors: Alan Ng, Chun Hua Gu, David Chen, Katherine Wong, Lu Zhou, Meilin Ma, Ramon Tam 17

Hong Fook Program Highlights $30 invested in the recently restructured Integrated Recovery and Community Program Hong Fook’s Integrated Recovery Program was transformed from the previous Self Help Program, and has taken an innovative approach to support Volunteer service development based on CHIME, a conceptual Development framework for personal recovery in mental health. The goal is to support clients to achieve their recovery goals towards Connectedness, Hope & Optimism, Identity, Meaning, and Empowerment (CHIME), through Recovery College, peer-facilitated Leisure Integrated Clubs, and peer support. Recovery & The strong self and social stigma in Asian community Community creates barriers for individuals to seek help Program sooner. Addressing stigma and facilitating service navigation through community capacity building has continuously been the priority for the newly branded Integrated Community Program, an integration of the Prevention and Promotion Program and the Professional Training Program. Besides the well- known Health Ambassador Training and the ongoing volunteer support groups in each cultural community, the team leads community empowerment activities and awareness campaigns, such as the bi-annual Hong Fook Walk for Wellness and the Vote for Health Campaign in each election year. Over 10,000 contacts were reached out to each year through the 2018 Hong Fook Walk for Wellness team’s involvement in community networks, media engagement, and community outreach. Growing service providers’ capacity is also critical to have larger impact on Immigrant, Refugee, Ethno-cultural and Racialized (IRER) populations. This year, Hong Fook’s Training Team celebrates its 10th anniversary in delivering the signature bi-lingual (English and French) training, Journey to Promote Mental Health, which has benefitted over 3,000 settlement workers across Ontario.
