A M E S S A G E F R O M OU R P R E SI D E N T G ROW TH OF AS SET S Swing for the Fences. At the time of this writing, it’s baseball season, AND hockey season, AND basketball season. Big 10 football is not being played in the fall. Long standing, traditional events, like your community foundation’s annual meeting, have gone viral. Others have been cancelled altogether. Wearing masks is considered considerate AND fashionable AND even political. Store shelves are void of disinfectant wipes. Schools are turned upside down with virtual learning AND lack of access to virtual 2019 learning AND fear. The race for social justice and racial equality seems to have retreated to the starting $20.5 million in assets block, with the finishing line a distant, intangible goal. Many who have never visited a food pantry are now reluctant but regular guests. Parents are navigating ZOOM meetings AND teaching AND parenting, 2009 while others are also sprucing up their resume on LinkedIn, looking for a job to replace the one they lost. Such an out of the norm world could have made Crawford Countians feel overwhelmed, confused, or defeated. $10.1 million in assets Instead, our community rallied, and we need to celebrate our tenacity and positive outcomes. So let’s list a few. We kept our case numbers down. We stayed home when we had to. We didn’t overwhelm our local health care facilities. We donated to food pantries. We held “stay strong” car parades and car graduations. We ordered take out from local eateries. We decorated our 1999 windows with signs and words of encouragement. We helped our businesses navigate loan and financial aid programs. We put bears in windows and took our children on scavenger hunts. We volunteered and raised money to beautify our downtowns. $2.2 million in assets We hung banners of our veterans. We hung banners AND displayed yard signs congratulating our graduating seniors and their 1989 accomplishments. We brought food to our medical staff and first responders. We held peaceful demonstrations. We sewed and $0.7 million in assets distributed face masks. We gave blood. We took walks in our parks. In his book, Strong Towns: A Bottom-Up Revolution to Rebuild American Prosperity, author Charles L. Marohn, Jr. states that, “…I believe that a financially strong national economy is the byproduct of having financially strong cities, towns, and neighborhoods. “ T he f uture ai n’t w hat it I do not believe the opposite: that our cities will be financially strong and healthy if we can only create a strong national us e d to b e.” economy. In short, I believe that economic strength is built from the bottom and works its way up …I do not believe that a focus on success at the national level will result in enduring, fine-grained prosperity in our local communities.” That being said, our - YO G I B E R R A , F O R M E R M L B P L AY E R , Crawford County community did its part to build, to believe, to “bottom up.” MANAGER AND COACH Similarly, rural sociologist Benjamin Winchester claims that it is a misconception that rural America is dying. He believes that rural is changing and restructuring, and that it’s actually very resilient. Or to put it another way, “If rural is dying, why can’t I find a house to buy?” He cites a survey listing the top three reasons people choose to live rural: simpler pace of life (think I-270 gridlock), safer and more secure, and low housing costs. He also cites PEW Research claiming that while 20% of respondents actually live rural, 50% say they would prefer to! So little did we know, but some actually envy our small communities and small efforts that pay such big benefits. In our current times, it also matters more than ever that we work at happiness and our mental health, and remember that it’s okay to find happiness in hard times. Psychology Professor Barbara Frederickson at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, found in a study that while happiness helps create and sustain emotional resilience, the opposite is also true. The emotional resilience that comes from knowing how you can get through a crisis with a little less despair and a little more sanity and perspective, can also lead to happiness. Therefore, as you look through this 2019 Gratitude Report, we hope the successes of 2019 will help stir fond memories of our lives before the chaos struck. As you look at the pictures and factoids in the 2021 calendar, we hope you are inspired by the people and places that make up our home. And remember Crawford County: Swing for the fences. Regards, Lisa Workman, CFRE President Home is Why!
