MILPERRA COLTS JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB | YEARBOOK 2019 Grant Bolling’s PRESIDENT’S REPORT Once again it was a great year for the Milperra Colts, we had our ups and downs like most years but overall it was a great year. For the first time in Colts history we had two female teams. It was the second year for our League Tag girls and the first year for our Under 14’s girls tackle side. Our League tag side made the Grand Final. They didn’t take away the win, but we were incredibly proud of each and every one of them. Our Under 14’s made the final with 9 players that had never played Rugby League before. An outstanding effort girls! The Under 9’s Div 3 had a great year this year making the grand final but did not get the grand prize . This team has come a long way in a short time I have seen this team grow from strength to strength over the last 2 years , Scott and his coaching staff should be proud of their efforts. Our Under 11’s Div 3 took out the Grand Final in style with a very convincing win. Kevin and crew have been working so hard that it was wonderful to see this day happen for them all. Our Under 15’s Gold made the Grand Final as well but unfortunately didn’t take out the win however the effort the boys put in was commendable with many of the boys being chosen for representative football with Canterbury. Well done to all of you. They have a great bunch of kids and I am sure they will get the results they deserve. There has been a lot of work going on around the club as many of you would’ve seen. The male and female toilets have been upgraded, the clubhouse being refurbished, a new canteen and a new score board. Many of these have been on our wish list for years. We also purchased a new Gator which has been a huge help for set up and pack up. We had some great events this year also. Our Legend’s lunch was first class with Matty and Andrew Johns as well as Brett Finch. Our Gala Day was a huge success, one for the record books. Everyone had a wonderful day and the fireworks at the end finished off what was one of the most fun days the club has ever had. The kids faces made all the hard work worthwhile. An extremely sad part of the year was the passing of one of our Under 11 players Jai Bruynius-Greene. Jai’s parents asked if they could hold his funeral service at the club and this was an absolute honour to farewell Jai at one of his favourite places. Jai was able to attend his teams Grand Final only a few days before he passed and held the winner’s Trophy high. He was so proud and there wasn’t a dry eye at the game. His teammates coach and everyone at Milperra Colts will miss Jai so much. He was a character with a great sense of humour and was so important to the Under 11’s. His family is always welcome at our club with open arms. 05
MILPERRA COLTS JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB | YEARBOOK 2019 Grant Bolling’s PRESIDENT’S REPORT So, with another season over we look forward to season 2020. This will be one of our biggest yet with the club turning 50. I hope everyone can be part of our huge celebration and make 2020 a year to remember. I would like to take this opportunity to thank some very special people. Barry Ward in particular who has worked tirelessly this year to get our clubhouse to where it is today. Without him it just wouldn’t be where it is now. He has been a great support to me especially when I was unwell. I didn’t have to worry knowing the club was in great hands. Also, to Dave Harrigan who took on a new role this year and has been a huge help to me, my executive who are amazing and the wonderful committee who are so committed to our club and to the brilliant helpers that made everything just happen during the year. You are all very special people! If anyone is thinking about joining the committee, please do it, you won’t regret it, we are a family and look after each other. I hope everyone has safe and happy off season, enjoy the Christmas break and we look forward to catching up with you all in 2020 06

MILPERRA COLTS JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB | YEARBOOK 2019 Milperra Colts IN THE NEWS! The Milperra Colts received some international press coverage late in the season due to the success of two former players. Steve Price (Warrington Wolves) and Justin Holbrook (St Helens) went head to head in the prestigious Challenge Cup Final in the English Super League. The pair were interviewed by several news outlets and took a stroll down memory lane, reminiscing about the time they won the Under 7 Grand Final in 1983. The team was managed by Steve’s father “Chicka“ Price and coached by Steve’s uncle Neil Johnson. Ultimately, it was Price’s Warrington Wolves who won the match at the famed Wembley stadium, with the underdogs defeating St Helens 18-4. It would prove to be a successful season for Justin Holbrook however, with Saints winning the Minor Premiership and defeating Salford to claim the Grand Final. It proved to be a fitting finale for Holbrook, with, Justin signing to coach the Gold Coast Titans in the NRL next season. We wish both men continued success in their coaching. DID YOU KNOW? The St.Helens connection isn’t just limited to Justin Holbrook , with Colts Vice President Barry Ward representing Saints in 2002. Similar to Justin, Barry’s team were defeated in the Challenge Cup Final, but would prove victorious in the Grand Final against Bradford. 11
MILPERRA COLTS JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB | YEARBOOK 2019 In loving MEMORY During the season, the Milperra Colts lost a much-loved member of our community, Jai Bruynius-Greene. Jai first came down to Killara in 2017 to join our under 9’s team. At the time I had no idea of the impact this cheeky kid with the big smile would have on our team, the coaches and parents. His Lion like courage and bravery was also hidden. In defence Jai would meet the attackers the same way he fought Cystic Fibrosis, head on, shoulders first and around the legs. He'd get knocked down but would courageously get up, brush himself off and get ready to go again. Unfortunately, as the season progressed Jai's illness got worse, but he continued to play and train. Jai didn't have to train but taking short cuts wasn't his way. A glimpse of the lion emerged. Eventually Jai’s condition would end his season and prevent him from playing in the Grand final he had worked so hard for. Jai was fortunate enough to receive a double lung transplant which should have given him a chance at a new future but would likely stop him from playing footy again. Incredibly after only a year of recovery Jai ran out in the first game of the 2019 season. The Lion had emerged. That moment will never be forgotten. The little champion had overcome incredible odds to fulfil his dream of playing footy. In true Jai fashion he believed he didn't deserve the Player of the Day Trophy that he won that day. He only played five more games before Cystic Fibrosis would hospitalize him again. It looked like Jai would miss another Grand final. Jai overcame the odds once again and supported by doctors, nurses and paramedics Jai finally made it to his first Grand final day. With the team's help Jai received the Winner's Trophy. The cheeky bugger got the ambulance to go through Drive thru Maccas, a first for an ambulance. Jai's memory will live on, his story a true inspiration to all. His legacy will be that he helps other kids find the strength within themselves to face all challenges. Jai called me coach, but he was the one doing all the teaching. We will never forget you Champion. RIP. 12

MILPERRA COLTS JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB | YEARBOOK 2019 John Abouhaidar’s UNDER 6B’S COACHES REPORT Once again another awesome season, the kids and families really loved and enjoyed their footy this season. Always a pleasure to gather with the kids and parents at training and on game day and catch up. The support and respect I receive from the parents and children is amazing and humbling. It is my pleasure to coach all my children, the parents have shown full trust in me to teach and coach their kids the way I feel right which I am truly grateful for. I heard Craig Bellamy say once, “what makes a great coach is great players”. I thought that was so true, the kids are so well disciplined, respectful and have great attitudes and values which come from their parents and make me appear to be a good coach LOL, but in fact it is all them. I’d like to thank all the coaching staff, Angie with all her managing tasks and always making sure the boys are there at training and pulling them up every time they get out a line LOL. Richard and last but not least Danny, who is ever reliable and always willing to try out new drills and my crazy ideas, always supporting me with what I want to do with the team. Always willing to have long yarns about how we can improve the team and individuals. We have a laugh from time to time about our expectations and remind ourselves what age group they are. The team gained so much momentum towards the back end of the season and I didn’t want it to end, really looking forward to 2020. We have a whole lot of new ideas and things we want to work on with the kids next year. I hope to see all the same playing group there next year. Once again thank you to all involved for a great season. MILPERRA COLTS JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB | YEARBOOK 2019 Carl Strauss’ UNDER 6W’S COACHES REPORT 2019 was a great and memorable year for the under 6 W team who were all playing in their first ever season of Rugby League. They were fortunate to be part of the Superhero Round and the season was capped off with the inaugural Terry Lamb Gala Day at Belmore Oval. They played 6 short round robin matches on the iconic ground while they met the legend himself and each player received a signed jersey! The team showed great potential and displayed they were quick learners right from their first trial game. They played tough and fair throughout the season, there were many highlights with awesome efforts, scintillating tries, sensational tackles and passion exhibited each game by all the players. The emphasis being fun, active participation for all and good team spirit. It was satisfying and a pleasure to coach such an energetic and enthusiastic playing group while seeing their skills and teamwork develop. It wasn’t all smooth sailing though with a mix of cheers, tears and much needed beers along the way! (In that order, with the beers consumed responsibly of course as an end of season team lunch celebration at the local club). Thank you to Jacqui for managing the team, her positivity, organisation, regular communication and updates for the side. Thank you to Dan for being trainer, for filling in as coach when necessary, your knowledge and experience is appreciated. Thank you to Charbel for filling in as trainer on the Superhero and Gala Days and for his “motivational pep talks” for the team. Special mention to coach John from the under 6 B team for his help, support and encouragement for our new team too. All the parents/families have been amazing and supportive. We have been blessed to have formed a cohesive and united team. Special mention to those who regularly helped the team at training, pre - game such or assisted in any way such as Mitch, Ash, Henare and Co. Thank you to all the committee members and volunteers for all their time and hard work to make this all possible and for the team to have such opportunities. MILPERRA COLTS JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB | YEARBOOK 2019 Kane McBride’s UNDER 8’S COACHES REPORT What a season the Milperra Colts u/8’s delivered in 2019. Every single player in the side should be proud of the effort both on the field and at training. At the beginning of the season we were struggling to find the numbers to take the field, starting the pre-season with only 6 players, but we hung in there and with the great support from some key member of the club we managed to grow that number to 11 just a few weeks into the season. Many games this year were won off the back of our great defence, the whole team really stepped it up to show some heroic toughness and stamina throughout. For a group that was only just getting to know each other the team spirit amongst all the kids was strong! The team was brilliantly managed by Samantha Ross who did a great effort in organising the scoring, administrative and communications side of the season. On behalf of the kid’s parents and myself, thanks heaps for all your hard work Sam! The Training and Coaching was done together by Andrew Renton and Myself. Andrew is a great asset to the club and the kids, always there to help in any way that he can, somebody give that man a medal will ya? MILPERRA COLTS JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB | YEARBOOK 2019 Stephen Crawford’s UNDER 10’S COACHES REPORT After an unsettled start to the year due to players departing and new ones arriving, the under 10s took to the mod field for the first time. After a few weeks of the extra space in the field being “no man’s land”, we started to discover that we could use our forwards to grind up the middle and spread it wide and get around our opponents. The new players began to adapt well to the team and the club culture, and we started to develop some real go forward. We tried many combinations throughout the year in the halves and the players fit really well into their positions. Due to an unfortunate draw, we ended up facing a few tough teams who questionably should have been in a higher division. We finished the season just shy of the finals but had a few of the results which were really close gone in our favour, we would have had a real shot this year. MILPERRA COLTS JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB | YEARBOOK 2019 Kevin Chambers’ UNDER 11’S COACHES REPORT A coming of Age. 2019 was a very memorable year for the young colts from the u11s. Devastatingly we lost our teammate Jai Bruynius-Greene. The little warrior had fought a long battle with Cystic Fibrosis which he lost on the 21/8. Jai had recovered from a double lung transplant and amazingly was able to take the field in our first game of the season against the Bankstown Bulls. It was the most courageous effort I’ve witnessed on a footy field. However, his condition worsened, and Jai spent most of the season in hospital. Fortunately, Jai was able to witness the highlight of our season, a victory over the Moorebank Rams in the Grand final. Jai’s funeral at Killara was a special day and a true indication that the Colts are a real Family Club. Thank-you to all for the kind thoughts, soothing words, generous donations of time and gifts, I have never been prouder of my club. On the field the team took their football to another level. Our defence was aggressive and was backed up with good line speed. Our attack was exciting with good ball movement. The first receivers were taking the ball at speed bringing our runners onto the ball. The forwards ran ‘*’ and ‘y’ plays to open up the opposition defences. This would take place with the understanding that the two most important things we needed to play well was Effort and Attitude. Of course, this was only possible because of the great attitude the boys showed at training. A highlight of the season was the team’s first footy trip. We participated in the National Primary Games held in Tamworth. The team played 5 games on Saturday and 4 games on Sunday against teams form across NSW and one team from Brisbane. We finished the weekend a credible 3 suffering only 1 loss and 1 draw. It was a fantastic bonding experience for our team, and they returned to Sydney a much closer and fitter footy team only weeks before our Finals campaign. Thank you to all who contributed to our fundraising for our trip and to the Club for their generous support. The boys were in peak form coming into our finals campaign. The major semi-final was against our arch nemesis the East Hills Bulldogs who had defeated us in a previous Grand final. Fortunately, we were too strong on the day and a strong victory set up a surprising clash with the Moorebank Rams. The boys were not to be denied and played well again to win the Title 28-6. Congratulations boys on a fantastic season which your efforts on the training paddock produced success on the field.
