End of Season Report Fall 2018 In 2014 with a growing need for youth football in our community and no local options, Bryan and Tory Kurtz stepped up and started a flag football league. Fast forward 5 seasons and not only do we have a flourishing flag football program but just finished an amazing inaugural season with our 5th and 6th grade tackle football program. The Cowboy tackle program went undefeated in the Central Oregon league. With a turnout that was beyond our expectations, we fielded a team of 24 kids, (a league maximum), and had several more on the waiting list. Due to this, we hope to expand and have 2 teams next year. With a new and growing tackle program, it should come as no surprise that the flag program continues to expand as well. If one were to drive by Davidson Field on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday evening in September or October, you would see just how popular and needed this program is. With 4 fields and as many as 8 teams playing at once, you would find hundreds of people scattered over the beautiful and historic Davidson Field cheering on the player’s while the players younger siblings play tag and practice their cartwheels. The flag football program has become not only an opportunity for football but an opportunity for families to spend quality time together. This year we registered 130+ kids, giving us 14 teams, playing in 3 different age groups ranging from 1st to 7th grade. These numbers make our flag football program amongst the largest in the state. With the overwhelming popularity and rapid growth in 2017, we decided to join the NFL flag, football program, which not only gives us access to specialized NFL jerseys but gave us the opportunity to take a team to regionals in Seattle, Washington in November 2017. With reports of a great tournament, we had high hopes to send multiple teams in 2018; however, the tournament was played before the start of our season. This unfortunate news spurred the decision to host our own tournament and invite all the teams that were registered for the NFL program around the state. We were able to host a two-day tournament with 8 teams for our 3rd and 4th grade division. We had amazing weather and had a fantastic tournament that has created some buzz around the state, which has us eagerly anticipating a bigger tournament for next year. For the 2019 season, we will be hosting a two-day tournament with spots for 16 teams in both the 3rd and 4th grade and 5th and 6th grade division. Fantastic coaching and amazing volunteers make these programs not only possible but successful. We are excited to see what the future holds for Crook County Football. skate park & pickleball courts ochoco creek park In 1992 a group of local skateboarders decided it was time for Prineville to have a Skate Park. They rallied the troops and raised funds to pour concrete abutments and bend steel to make ramps. This volunteer homemade park has been home to many skaters over the years. As time has it, the asphalt surface finally gave in to effects of Central Oregon sunshine and the cracks became a serious liability. There have been a number of efforts over the years to try and raise funds to build a new professional Skate Park but to no avail. Not until a group involved in a leadership training program put on by the Ford Family Foundation here in Prineville put their minds to improving the surface of the Skate Park. These folks raised over $20,000 and contracted with Dreamland Skate Parks to come in and secure the ramps and create a new smooth concrete surface. The young people loved it and this project sparked the question; why can’t we raise enough money to build a modern concrete Skate Park? And so it began… Fundraisers, public outreach, design meetings, grant writing, three years of hard work and some losing hope along the way, we have finally landed a large Local Government Grant from the Oregon State Parks Commission and we are ready to build! Along with all of the Skate Park enthusiasm, there was also a separate group of “die hard’s” that use the old run down tennis courts to play Pickleball. Pickleball is a fun social sport that tend to bring out the youthful spirit in the young at heart. These dedicated folk have reached into their back pockets and donated funds to help convert the haggard courts to new Pickleball courts. The grant and donations that we received will be used to renovate and expand the Skate Park, renovate the old tennis courts and convert them to Pickleball courts, add parking along Juniper St, add lighting and surveillance cameras to the site and add new landscaping. This project is planned for spring / summer 2019! 18 www.ccprd.org

instructors mica stafford / sports & fitness For Prineville native Mica Stafford, dance has been a part of her life since childhood. Growing up she studied various dance disciplines such as ballet, jazz and tap at High Desert Dance Arts, under the tutelage of Ms. Caroline Kaiser. She added gymnastics to her repertoire at the age of 8 and progressed in the sport, ultimately being coached by and competing for famed Coach Bela Karolyi out of Houston, TX. Mica continued to pursue dance during her college years, studying modern dance at Portland Community College. When the opportunity arose to become the owner/director of HDDA, Mica could imagine no better way to help spread her vision of bringing arts to the community as well as providing a place to encourage students to express themselves and to love the art of dance, both as a recreational pursuit and in the competitive realm. michael boyd / firearm safety Michael has been a sworn law enforcement officer for 33 years; he has been working as a firearms instructor for at least that long also. Ochoco Gym Breaths New Life Two years. That’s how long Crook County Parks and Recreation District has been in conversation with Housing Works about the Ochoco Gym. Well, on November 7th we got the keys. Anyone that has lived in and been a part of sports programs in Prineville knows that gym space comes at a premium, and through the revitalization of the Ochoco Gym we hope to relieve some of that pressure. In addition to new sports programs, we hope to utilize the gym for new day camps, birthday parties, events, and recreation classes. Since taking possession of the gym we have been able to offer a Dance class through High Desert Dance Arts, birthday parties, a two-day basketball camp for 3rd-5th graders, and as we look forward to the future, we are excited to offer many more opportunities. With the operation of the gym underway, we are excited to move forward two highly demanded sports in 2019; indoor soccer and adult league basketball. AYSO is one of the largest youth leagues in Crook County and through a vision brought forth by the league commissioner, Jonny Oelkers, we are excited to partner with and create the Prineville Soccer Club. Through this strategic partnership, we will be able to use the soccer program expertise of Jonny and the administrative personnel and function of CCPRD to create an indoor soccer program that meets the growing needs and desires of our community for a winter soccer program. With a program such as this, students that desire to play will now have the option to work on their skills in an indoor environment. In the two years that I have worked for the Parks and Recreation District, I cannot count the number of times I have taken calls or in-person requests for an adult basketball league. With the new access to Ochoco Gym, CCPRD is going to start offering open gym in February of 2019, with the desire to start a league in the winter of 2020. These are just a couple of ways that Crook County Parks and Recreation District is striving to bring new recreational programming to the community. You can also look forward to dodge ball nights, Archery Tag, NERF nights, film festivals and much more as we make the Ochoco Gym a gathering place for all. eli tomlinson / recreation coordinator Like us on Facebook @CCParksRecDistrict 31
