Healthy Hurst Wellness Initiative The Healthy Hurst initiative was created in 2006 as a way for Hurst citizens to track their exercise goals. Over the past 15 years, the program has evolved into a health initiative representing the varying external forces contributing to a balanced lifestyle. To convey this idea in a visual format, the Parks and Recreation Team created the Healthy Hurst logo composed of five different symbols. The logo seeks to represent everything about Hurst that contributes to a synergy between community and individual. The symbols, which portray sunshine (sun), nature (leaf), physical activity (bike), and social events (music note), surround a vibrant, healthy heart. The colors orange, green, yellow, and blue represent the four seasons and the city’s pledge to promote positive health throughout the year. As the slogan at the bottom states, the ultimate goal is to “Feel Good & Live Well.” Hurst isn’t a healthy city because of fitness classes, treadmills, and weight equipment. A Healthy Hurst is a culmination of the programs, businesses, and other city amenities that citizens utilize daily. Whether visiting a park, working out at the Hurst Recreation Center, checking out a book at the Hurst Public Library, or shopping at the Northeast Mall, you are actively making a Healthy Hurst. 6 HURST PARKS AND RECREATION | SUMMER 2021
Fitness-Related Programs & Events To help our citizens find fun ways to incorporate a healthy lifestyle into their lives, we offer fitness-related programs and events throughout the year. These programs and events are free to all Hurst residents and non-residents who are members of the Hurst Recreation Center. They are as follows: Dash ‘N’ Splash When June 2021 Our 1 mile and 5k run, where participants get the chance to take a dip in our Aquatics Center pool after the run is complete. Participants will receive a pool pass to the Chisholm Aquatics Center and their choice of either same-day entry or future entry. Kids Triathlon When August 2021 A fun twist on a traditional triathlon where kids run, bike, and then cool off with a fun water feature. Walktober When October 2021 A nation-wide program that encourages participants to get out and walk during October. Participants track the days they walked, detailing how far or for how long. Eight to Great 8-Week Fitness Challenge When January 2022 Post-holiday fitness challenge, where participants have opportunities to track their workouts and weight loss. The Hurst Parks and Recreation Team look forward to seeing you participate in our next Healthy Hurst program! WWW.HURSTTX.GOV 7
