CALEDONIA PARK SCHOOL OPTION SELECTION SHEET 2019-2020 Grade 7 ● Grade 7 students are required to take Tech Ed. in Term 1 ● Junior High students will be assigned one option course per term - according to individual choices and class size. ● An effort will be made to expose students to a variety of courses for each term, rather than repeating selections. ● Based on administrative review, lists will be posted at the beginning of each term. ● Effort will be made to place students in one of their first 5 choices but this is not guaranteed. Please be sure that any of these 5 selections will be acceptable. ● Requests for course changes must be approved by the parent/guardian and administration. Term 1 Options Tech Ed (Grade 7 Computers) Teachers: Mrs. McClean, Mrs. Stepanick & Mrs. Peters The fundamental purpose of this tech ed. program is to provide students with knowledge, skills, and attitudes that will enhance their ability to achieve success in junior high, high school, the workplace, post-secondary education or training, and daily life. This option will specifically focus on: · Word processing skills (formatting, typing etc.) · Skills pertaining to google apps (Google docs, google forms, google sheets, google slides) · An introduction to Powerpoint, Excel and Microsoft Word · Webpage creation using the site wix.com Term 2 Options Cosmetology Teacher: Mrs. McClean The aim of cosmetology is to introduce you to hair and skin techniques. You will learn skin care, hairstyling, nail care, make-up and more. We will explore these techniques largely through hands-on activities. Students will be trying new skills on themselves and other students in the class. At the end of this course, students will have a grasp on basic beauty care, learn appropriate techniques depending on the occasion, and be able to complete some basic styles. This is an opportunity to let your imagination and creativity run free! Drama Teacher: Mrs. Stepanick Drama encourages students to explore a variety of dramatic roles and develop a range of dramatic skills while being independent and in small groups. Students will explore the craft of acting that involves exercises, scene work and theater games designed to develop performance skills and techniques. Monologues (a one person speech) and short skits will be performed during this term. **THIS IS NOT A DRAMA PRODUCTION**
Woodworking - Hope Chest Teacher: Mr. Martel If you want to further your woodworking skills, this is the course for you! Students will learn to use machines and hand tools to construct a “Storage Truck” or “Hope Chest”. The project will feature a lid with back support, internal sliding tray and scroll sawn letters for name identification. Because of the complexity of the project, it is recommended that students have a basic woodworking background. This project will require an additional fee of $40. Foods: Chopped Caledonia Teacher: Mrs. Pauls This Home Economics foods oriented course is for the truly creative. As seen on TV, groups will get a platter of ingredients each week, and it will be up to the group to decide what they will make with the ingredients they are given. Students will participate in challenges for extra ingredients, and they will also manage a budget throughout the course for days when they need to buy extra items. Sabotaged cooking experiences and opportunities for culinary creativity will make each week an exciting adventure. Book Club Teacher: Mr. Brunton Do you love to read? Do you like watching movies? If you answered YES - then this class is for you! Students will explore the joy of reading, watching and discussing books and movies in this new course. Students will read various genres, from fantasy to action and adventure, to realistic fiction. T itles will be chosen based on student interest and availability. After reading, students will watch movies based on the books they’ve read. The class will involve discussions and visual representations to demonstrate growth in appreciation of both literature and film. A love of reading is all you need. All reading levels are welcome! Participation in discussion activities is a must! Please come ready to participate in every class. Get Scrappin’! Teacher: Mrs. Peters Do you take 1000’s of pictures with no where to put them?! Would you like to turn your beautiful, important memories into keepsakes you’ll cherish forever?! This scrapbooking class is the class for you! This course will allow students to develop their talents through scrapbooking and to explore new inventive ways to capture their memories. Students will
complete a multitude of scrapbooking projects that include a “Squash Book”, “Word Album” and “Explosion Box” with the potential to attend a workshop through a crafting store in town. Students will be asked to bring in pictures of friends & family and may purchase additional supplies if they would like to further personalize their projects This course will require a fee of $30. Ball Hockey Teacher: Mr. Mailer Students will learn the basic skills associated with the game and have the opportunity to compete against other students in a scrimmage each class. Participants in this option will be graded based on participation and sportsmanship. Students will be allowed to bring their own stick if they want (MUST have plastic blade) but are not required to. 3D Designs Teacher: Mrs. May Do you like Science? In this class, you will be given a variety of materials to plan, design, develop and create projects. This hands-on course will allow you the opportunity to construct your best Earthquake resistant tower, gliders that can do every trick in the trade, sculptures that defy gravity, Rube Goldberg Machines, and other student-driven ideas. This course will require a fee of $15. Strategies Teacher: Miss Vandenberghe In this option, students will spend weeks playing a variety of strategic board games, developing problem solving and strategy skills. The main games played will be: Risk (3 weeks), Settlers of Catan (3-4 weeks), Chess (3-4 weeks) and Werewolf (1 week). Class time will consist of learning the games, discussing strategies, and playing tournaments. There may also be a week of “free play” (time pending). Students are expected to participate in every strategic game. iLead Teacher: Mrs. Ruskowsky iLead is a fun authentic option for those who have a desire to make a positive difference to our Caledonia Park school community. Do you enjoy helping teachers with younger students? Maybe you are thinking that you might want to be a teacher when you grow up? If so, this
option is a terrific opportunity for you to identify your strengths for helping others and making successful personal relationships with younger students. You may be supporting reading and math/science activities. You may be assigned to work with younger students to help with projects. Maybe you will assist students by being reading buddies or supervisors of classroom centres. Perhaps you will need to put your computer skills to use. If you are looking for a way to be creative, you may have the opportunity to assist teachers by helping create bulletin board displays, photocopy/laminate class resources, or possibly create board/computer review games. Note that this is an individual pursuit option and placements with teachers will be made after a conversation with Mrs R. Term 3 Options Photography Teacher: Mrs. McClean Photography plays an important role in our world today. We photograph to preserve memories, document events, and create artistic work. This course introduces students to the basics of photography, including camera functions and photo composition. Students will learn what it takes to create a good photograph and how to improve photographs of animals, people, and vacations. They will also begin working with their photographs using photo-editing and presentation software. Through a variety of assigned projects, students will engage their creativity by photographing a range of subjects and learning to see the world through the lens of their cameras. Bring your own camera from home! Film Studies Teacher: Mrs. Stepanick Calling All Movie Lovers!!! This is a course for those who love to watch, discuss and critique movies of all types and genres. In addition to watching movies, students could be expected to complete questions, research a director/actor/actress, review professional movie reviews, and create a movie review of their own. Movies will be rated G, PG and PG 13/14. Parental permission will be required for this option.
Woodworking: Adirondack Chair Teacher: Mr. Martel Further your skills in woodworking by constructing an Adirondack Chair. This classic project is both useful and decorative. No backyard garden or deck should be without one. Material fee for this project is $40. Foods: BBQ Blitz Teacher: Mrs. Pauls Do you love the taste of food fresh off the grill? Does the smell of a neighbour’s barbecued meal make your mouth water? If you like the taste of freshly barbecued meals, then this option is for you! In this course, we will make our own marinades, grill a variety of meat dishes, try our hand at foil recipes and even make some grilled pizzas. Throughout the course, students will learn how to safely use a BBQ to create delicious meals fresh off the grill. Individual Pursuits Teacher: Mr. Brunton Individual Pursuits is a Physical Education based option in which participants work individually with and without equipment and monitor their own behaviour, movements and performance. Participants in this option will also interact with others in these activities. Students will be exposed to activities such as yoga, track and field (shot put, long jump, javelin & high jump), cross country running, HITT classes, golf, badminton, pickleball and other individual endeavors. Craftin’ Creations Teacher: Mrs. Peters Do you spend hours on Pinterest?! Do you love personalized items?! Could your bedroom use a little more decor?! This course will give you an opportunity and the freedom to choose your own themes to match your own personal style! We’ll be painting stools, decorating mirrors, creating string art, along with many other wooden crafts. *Each student will be responsible for finding 2-3 items to DIY (an old mirror, a worn stool/chair). Please do not buy new - Check out garage sales, Kijiji and thrift stores throughout the year for old/worn pieces we can bring back to life! This course will require a fee of $40 for material & potential Field Trip.
River Valley Activities Teachers: Mr. Mailer & Mrs. May Students enrolled in this option will have the opportunity to experience a number of physical activities that they may not typically do in a traditional phys ed class. Students will be graded on participation and attitude. Some of the activities included in this option previously were: Canoeing Stand Up Paddle Boarding Biking in the Edmonton River Valley Longboarding Indoor Rock Climbing Bowling Archery Biking around Leduc Underwater Hockey Fencing This course will require a fee of $140. (Students must have fees paid before they will be able to participate in any of the activities) Students will be required to have a working bike and helmet. Improv Teacher: Miss Vandenberghe Do you enjoy making things up on the spot?! Playing games were you have to think on your toes? Making others laugh? Then this option is for you! In this option, students will learn the basics of improvisation (and yes… flocking/movement, who/what/where), create scenes on the spot, and play a variety of theater sports and improv games. These activities will help to develop their improv skills for future use in drama related activities. Expectations: Improv doesn’t happen without participation! Doing your best and participating in all games is expected! A good attitude: Improv is the best when you are providing yourself and your castmates with a safe, encouraging, and fun space to play in! An interest in Drama: This option is geared for students who enjoy producing drama and comedy with other students. iLead Teacher: Mrs. Ruskowsky iLead is a fun authentic option for those who have a desire to make a positive difference to our Caledonia Park school community.
