MATT'S MESSAGE ceomatt harris Heading into round 6 of the Tooheys Newcastle RL season the Business Plaza Cup has a new competition leader. After their fourth win of the year the unheralded Kurri Kurri Bulldogs sit two points clear on an extremely congested leader board. Once again last weekend?s matches produced a couple of upsets and a return to form for one of the competition favourites. Lakes United kicked a sideline conversion to secure a two point victory over neighbours Central Newcastle to keep pace with the competition frontrunners while the Goannas 22 to 12 win over South Newcastle gave the coalfield club their second win of the season. West Newcastle bounced back to form with a strong 14 point win over previous competition leaders Maitland. The remaining match was a cliff-hanger with the Bulldogs holding out a fast finishing Macquarie outfit with the win propelling the Kurri Kurri club to the top of the competition ladder. It is with no surprise that expectations are that all round 6 matches should be crackers. Maitland Pickers will look to return to the winners circle when they host Central Newcastle at Maitland Sportsground, last round winners West Newcastle travel to Kurri Kurri to tackle Business Plaza Cup leaders the Bulldogs, while Cessnock will look to make it three from three when they battle Lakes United at Cessnock Sportsground. The final match has South Newcastle v Macquarie at Townson Oval. A difficult task to pick the match of the round but this week the BarTV live-stream game will be the Pickers v Butcher Boys fixture and can be viewed via our website (www.newcastlerugbyleague.com.au) or Facebook page (Tooheys Newcastle Rugby League). This weekend also signifies the first of our futures rounds during which we promote the Tooheys Newcastle RL u19 competition. The Maitland v Central match will precede the Rebels representative match while the remaining three games will be played directly before the Business Plaza Cup matches. We have again partnered with the Newcastle Knights to offer trial opportunities to u19 players within our competition. The futures rounds will provide an opportunity for our up-and-coming stars to stake a claim for one of the eight Jersey Flegg trial opportunities. As previously mentioned our senior Rebels take on a Ron Massey representative side this Friday night at Maitland Sportsground. The game kicks off at 7.30pm with the u19 Maitland v Central Newcastle match starting at 6.15pm. The guys will be playing for a spot in the combined representative side traveling to Burleigh in two weeks?time to take on the Queensland Rangers. Best of luck to coach Phil Williams and his team. A reminder to keep up-to-date with everything Newcastle Rugby League including match-day scores by following us on Facebook (Tooheys Newcastle Rugby League), Twitter (@Newcastle_RL) and via our new website (www.newcastlerugbyleague.com.au). www.markhugesfoundation.com.au

CLUBNEWS CENTRAL BUTCHER BOYS THE BUTCHERS PAPER A disappointing result in 1st grade last against Lakes last week, to let the 2 points slip away hurt the players and coaching staff. We will need to be better today against Maitland. Our U19s played good hard footy to beat Lakes while our LLT and Reserve grade team had wins over strong Lakes sides. Our Open side came 2nd to Lakes and will be looking to bounce back today. Our popular Central Butcher Boys Sports Lunch is on Friday 29th June at 12pm. It?s $110 per person or $1000 for a table of 10, guest speakers are Malcolm Johnston and Wayne Rabbit Bartholomew. Tickets now on sale at Central Leagues. Congratulations to our LLT players Jessica Potts, Rachael Jeffs, Ainsley Hughes, Amelia Hughes and Lily Goodchild for being selected to don the blue and red and play touch football for the Knights as part of the inaugural NRL Touch Premiership. To have 5 players selected from our Club shows the talent we have. KURRI KURRI BULLDOGS The LLT team kicked off an exciting weekend for the Kurri Kurri Bulldogs with a team dinner on Friday evening at the their sponsors establishment St at ion Hot el, afterwards heading to the Sylvest er Real Est at e Sportsground to support the Third grade team. In a hard fought encounter against the Macquarie Scorpions Kurri Kurri prevailed 12-10. With 5 games under the belt with as many wins the players and staff deserve recognition for their efforts thus far. It would be remiss if we didn?t acknowledge the recent birthday of Daniel (peter pan) Doyle happy birthday. Sensational weather enticed the crowd to mosey on down to Sylvester Real Sportsground for the clash between the under 19?s reserve grade and first grade with the Macquarie Scorpions. The under 19?s unfortunately went down to a strong Macquarie side. However if they continue to work hard they certainly have the ability to trouble many sides and develop into a strong unit. The reserve grade game was a tough game with snippets of exceptional skill on display from both teams. Coming up against a Macquarie scorpion?s team that has been instilled at winx like odds to win the competition, the Bulldogs put in their best display of the season. The game was in the balance with minutes to go however the Bulldogs could not hang on with Macquarie scoring late in the second half to pinch the lead back. The coach and the players are up for the challenge and no doubt we will see continued improvement each week. Sunday the 27th of May was the annual old-boys golf day, with 36 teams entered the most ever the day was a huge success. There was a great mix of past and present players, as well as sponsors and supporters with some fashionable teams wearing matching outfits. A round of applause to the old-boys a seamlessly run event and a great representation of the work you do for the club, you did well keeping number 1 from the microphone. 200 gam es a special m om en t in an y player ?s car eer , t h is w eek en d w e get t o celebr at e M ick Cam pt on?s 200t h gr ade gam e f or t h e Ku r r i Ku r r i Bu lldogs. Mick?s longevity at the Kurri Kurri Bulldogs is such that he has been associated with some of the most influential players and coaches from a myriad of eras. The likes of Peter Brady, Jesse Royal, Reegan Tanner, Brett Clements. A recent social media post suggested Mick would have reached the 200 games in season 2016 if he hadn?t enjoyed conversing with the referees and judiciary about his game so much. Saturday the second of July provides you the opportunity to get along and celebrates Mick?s 200th grade game Sylvester Real Estate Sportsground followed by the opportunity to be regaled by stories of Mick?s rugby league prowess at the Station Hotel afterwards. A club stalwart who gives countless hours to the Kurri Kurri junior club, there is nothing he enjoys more than watching Darcy and Ollie play on a Saturday morning for the mighty Bulldogs. M ACQUARIE SCORPIONS PATRON: M R COL BURNS: A mixed bag for the Scorpions last weekend against Kurri Bulldogs with the Open Grade on Friday night going down 12-10 in a hard fought game, with the Bulldogs going over to score with only 90 seconds left to go in the game. Again it was unforced errors and mistakes which proved costly for the Scorpions side and when they get that right this side will win plenty of games. The Under 19s had a solid win against Kurri coming away with a 34-16 win and securing their second win of the season. The squad now needs to consolidate for the remainder of the first round and move into the second round of the competition in a strong position to again feature in the semi finals. Best for the Scorpions were Jason Edwards, Jack Jordan and Dean Morris. The Reserve Grade despite going in with a severely weakened side due to injuries in the first grade and reserve grade managed to come away with a hard fought 24-20 win and stay at the top of the competition ladder. This win highlighted the depth in the club and the attitude of the playing group to hang tough and come away with the points. Best for the Scorpions were Malik Deyalou, Tyler Prince Campbell and Aaron Simon. Unfortunately the First Grade side could not come away with the points going down 26-24 after being down 12-0 early in the first half. Like the Open Grade it was unforced errors and mistakes that made life difficult for the Scorpions. On two occasions after the Scorpions scored tries they lost possession before tackle two after the restart, but they showed great heart to still be competitive despite having lost a number of players due to injury in the match. Best for the Scorpions were Matt Simon who was the standout player on the field, Nathan Cantor and Matt Hay. This weekend the Scorpions travel to Merewether to take on the South Lions in what should be very close games in all the grades. LAKES UNITED SEAGULLS Round 5 seen the highly fancied Central Charlestown team visit Cahill Oval, the local derby takes on more significance due to both teams playing for the Creer Cup. The Creer Cup supports local charities and this year Lakes United supported Ronald McDonald House while, Central supported Charlies Run 4 Kids, with the winning team donating $500 to their charity. After Lakes got away to a 12-0 lead, Central fought their way back into the contest to lead 18-12 late into the second half. Central?s half back Brad Murray was sent to the sin bin with 8 minutes to go for committing a professional foul. Lakes capitalised straight away by scoring from the ensuing penalty and took the scores to 18-18. With 3 minutes left Lakes received a penalty wide out on the touch line and elected to kick for goal. Toa Mata?afa successfully kicked the goal and took Lakes to a 20-18 win to retain the Creer Cup. This week we take on Cessnock, Lakes United` s first opponent in a NRL competition match was Cessnock. The date was April 19, 1947 and the Seagull` s won 28-14 after going in at halftime down 5-12. Ron Golden scored Lakes first try and in Reserve grade Max Walton had the honour of kicking the clubs first ever goal. The Goanna team included a young Frank Stanmore whilst included in Lakes first 13 was Albert Paul. Five years later both these men would tour with the 1952 Kangaroos.
