The artistic journey of Vasilij Kandinskij (1866-1944) is a crucible where Russian tradition, the German Middle
Ages, childhood visions of Venice, theosophical suggestions, revolutionary ambitions, alpine landscapes
and the attraction of Parisian cosmopolitanism come together, intertwine and clash. In practice, several

20th century, of which the Russian painter was one of the leading lights. It was in that crucible that he
elaborated the formal experimentation that led him to theorize Abstract art, but also to influence

removal of any link to the representation of the real and the opening up to expressive models more
characteristic of the world of music (many of his works are entitled “improvisation,” “impression,” or
“composition”). In 1910 he painted his first abstract watercolor, in 1912 he gave life, along with Franz Marc,
