The Stanford Public Interest Law Foundation is dedicated to providing financial support to and creating opportunities for law students and legal professionals to engage in public interest work. SPILF’s goals are to bring legal services to groups that would otherwise lack access to adequate legal representation, strengthen the network of students and alumni involved with public interest work, provide training and support to students interested in pursuing public interest work while at Stanford Law School and after graduation, and to increase the participation in and visibility of public interest initiatives at Stanford. We have seeded many projects at the Law School, including Summer Funding, Post-Graduate Public Interest Fellowships, and the Public Interest Lawyer of the Year Awards, all of which have become institutions of the public interest community. To support students pursuing careers in the public interest, SPILF also provides bar grants to graduating 3Ls. These cash grants assist them with bar fees and study courses to ease their financial burden at the outset of their careers. All students whose starting positions involve working for underserved communities or the environment are eligible. The SPILF Student Initiatives Grant Program supports student-run projects at Stanford that make a public interest impact. In 2017, SPILF received many important applications from a diverse group of applicants. The following programs were selected as recipients of SPILF Student Initiative Grants. Alternative Spring Break Each year, the Levin Center gives students the opportunity to spend their Spring Break providing much-needed legal assistance to underserved communities in partnership with existing organizations across the country. Workers' Rights Pro Bono Project In partnership with a local non-profit, the Workers’ Rights Pro Bono Project hosts clinics to provide free and confidential information to workers about their legal rights. Each clinic has a teaching topic, including denial of wages, discrimination, work and safety issues, unemployment benefits, harassment, and wrongful termination. Native American Law Student Association NALSA organizes an alternative spring break trip to the Yurok Reservation where student volunteers assist with writing wills, a vital need in Indian Country to prevent allotments and property from being fractionated. Stanford Prison Advocacy and Resources Coalition In partnership with local jails, SPARC facilitates student-led book clubs and creative writing classes that bring together students and prisoners in spaces that encourage academic analysis, personal reflection, and creative expression. Stanford Law Students Against Gendered Violence SLS GiVe hosts events on campus that illuminate the important role gender plays in a number of pressing legal arenas. Events look at the intersection of faith and gender, sexual violence and the law, and comparative insights from international practices. Stanford Human Rights Center The Stanford Human Rights Center hosted a series of panels and discussions focused on the impact of the Trump presidency on issues of international law. 5
Resources for the Formerly Incarcerated SPILF funded the creation of a website designed to provide information and mentoring to formerly incarcerated students who are applying to law school. Student Research Student researchers went to Colombia to partner with local universities in a project researching the environmental and social harms inflicted by FARC guerrillas on Colombian communities. Women in Politics WIP assists SLS women in making preparations to run for public office. With SPILF funding, WIP hosted a workshop on articulating the call to service and implementing a short term plan to run for office, a hands-on fundraising workshop with a political consultant, and a women in negotiations workshop in partnership with WSL. Women of Stanford Law WSL has been generating a body of research about the gender, racial, and sexual orientation diversity among law school faculty. This research will culminate in a formal published report that will provide invaluable institutional knowledge at SLS, allowing future students and student groups to chart changes in faculty diversity over time. Project Clean Slate PCS helps clients in expungement hearings in California court, where there is a dire need for more attorneys arguing in court on behalf of clients. Currently students can only help prepare these cases but cannot argue them. With SPILF funding, PCS can help students receive student bar certification in California so that they can argue in hearings and better meet this dire need. Pro Bono Trip to Help Asylum Seekers Lawyers and law students working in partnership with Pueblos Sin Fronteras provided asylum-related know-your-rights trainings and realistic information regarding US detention to migrant asylum seekers from Central America. 6
Silent Auction Silent auction bidding opens at 6:30 PM and is located on the first and second floors of the Classroom Building. Bidders will record their bids on bid sheets in front of each item. Items will be awarded to one bidder only (the first name listed on a group bid – unless otherwise specified on the bid sheet itself), and group bids must be paid in a single payment. The minimum bid and minimum raise for each item are shown on each bid sheet. To be valid, bids must comply with these minimums and be legible. A written bid constitutes a legal contract to purchase that silent auction item at the price you stated if your bid is the winning bid. The highest valid bid entered prior to closing will be the winner. The Silent Auction will close at 8:15 PM. All bids must be recorded at that time in order to be considered. Live Auction Live auction bidding begins promptly at 8:45 PM in Paul Brest Hall. When bidding, please raise your hand (or glow stick!) so that you may be identified by our auctioneer and ushers. A bid acknowledged by the auctioneer is a legal contract to purchase the item. If a group is bidding on one item, please designate one person to place your combined bid. Auction items will be awarded to one purchaser only. 7
Payment Live Auction items must be paid for immediately after they are won. An usher will come to your seat, accept payment, and bring you back a receipt. All Silent Auction items must be paid for by the end of the evening at the entrance to Paul Brest Hall. For your convenience, we gladly accept American Express, Visa, and MasterCard, but cash or check are strongly preferred. Pickup Once you have paid for your items, you will be issued a receipt. Please proceed to the east side of the Law Lounge and present this receipt to a SPILF representative to claim your tangible items and/or certificates for services. Items must be claimed by May 1 or they will be forfeited without refund. Tax Information This catalog lists the fair market value of each item. Any amount you pay in excess of that amount may be available to you as a charitable contribution for tax purposes. Please check with your tax advisor for specifics. Terms of Sale Unless otherwise noted, all certificates for goods and services must be used by December 2018. All sales are final. There will be no exchanges or refunds. SPILF does not make any expressed or implied warranties or guarantees regarding the quality or value of the items or services purchased at the Auction. SPILF has attempted to describe and catalog all items accurately, but please be aware that all items are offered and sold "AS IS." SPILF has also attempted to be as accurate and inclusive about restrictions as possible. However, all items and services are subject to the terms and conditions specified by the donors. We recommend you contact the donor immediately to learn what you can and to ensure that you can claim your item. Reservations for trips and vacation accommodations must be mutually arranged with the donor unless otherwise noted. No refunds will be allowed for canceled tickets and/or accommodations. Absolutely no resale of items. 8
