The 5G Malaysia International Conference 2020, themed 5G: Progressing Humanity, is the country’s foremost platform to discuss the potential of the technology in improving quality of life and spurring innovations. The one-day conference is being held in Langkawi, one of the 1st 5G islands in the world and one of the many sites where 5G Demonstration Projects are being conducted nationwide. Conference participants are able to witness 5G use cases in the areas of agriculture, digital healthcare, education, entertainment/media, smart airport, smart transportation, smart city and tourism. The conference brings together experts from far and wide, distinguished speakers, and high-powered captains of industry who will exchange knowledge, experience, idea and insight in nurturing and accelerating the adoption of 5G services and applications. Topics include economic and social perspectives on developing countries’ transition to 5G amidst the current state of 5G deployment globally, and what it takes for industry players to transform from being a connectivity provider to an ecosystem enabler. The conference anticipates participants from government agencies, international regulators, policy makers, researchers, industry players and academicians. Participants are also invited to tour the 5G Demonstration Projects live sites on 21 January 2020.

Speakers and moderators SAMEER SHARMA Senior Advisor, ITU Regional Office Asia Pacific Sameer Sharma is Senior Advisor responsible for sustainable development through ICTs by providing technical assistance and creating conducive policy and regulatory framework for South Asian countries. He assisted several countries in migration from legacy networks to Next Generation Networks, designing Broadband Policy Framework and Wireless Broadband Master Plans and Conformance and Interoperability. He is also regional focal point on cyber security issues and developed legislative framework for cybersecurity, establishment of CIRT and Child Online Protection (COP). Sharma worked extensively on digital inclusion including developing policy framework on ICT for Persons with Disability and assisted countries on emergency communications framework and network restoration including Nepal, India, and Timor-Leste. In the past, Sharma had worked at senior positions with MCMC in Malaysia and TRAI in India. JULIAN GORMAN Head of APAC, Global System for Mobile Communication Association (GSMA) Julian is a global telecommunications executive with over 20 years of experience in the mobile industry leading group and operator business transformation initiatives, and establishing new digital business opportunities. He has pioneered new businesses and innovation in mature and emerging markets across Africa, Europe, Australia and Asia with industry leaders including Vodafone, MTN and Ooredoo. He has always been at the forefront of establishing partnerships and disrupting conventional business models including launching award-winning start-up programmes in Indonesia and Myanmar. He has been recognised for his innovation in digital women, health and agriculture services with industry awards and grants. He now leads the GSMA APAC team engaging CxO leaders across the region to optimise member participation and commitment to GSMA programmes while providing a trusted channel for exchange of ideas, priorities, and focus. Julian has degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Law from Australia and is now based in Hong Kong. 3
JOE BARRETT President, Global mobile Suppliers Association (GSA) Joe Barrett is President of the Global mobile Suppliers Association (GSA), the leading industry association representing mobile suppliers worldwide. Prior to GSA, Joe worked at both Nokia and Qualcomm representing each company on the GSA Executive Board and helped drive the mobile technology agenda to position GSA as the trusted global supplier’s voice in the industry. Joe started his career in the Royal Navy and then at BT. He moved into the embryonic mobile industry in 1985 and has worked in roles including product marketing, marketing and communications, business strategy and business planning. He was part of the 3G strategic business team at Nokia, and helped Flarion establish OFDMA as the technology for 4G and now 5G. At Qualcomm Joe was part of the European Innovations Team and Halo high power wireless charging technology for electric vehicles. Joe holds an MSc. in Marketing from the University of Glamorgan and the CIM Advanced Diploma in Marketing. TAN SRI DATUK DR. KAMAL SALIH Chairman, Malaysian Institute of Economic Research (MIER) Tan Sri Datuk Dr. Kamal Salih was appointed as the Chairman of MIER since April 2019 and was the founding Executive Director of MIER. As a policy advisor, Tan Sri Kamal was a member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Panel, the Malaysian Business Council, and acted as the Rapporteur-General of the first National Economic Consultative Council, MAPEN1. He had previously served Universiti Sains Malaysia between 1973-1985 as a Professor, Dean and Deputy VC (Academic). Tan Sri Kamal is now adjunct professor of Economics and International Development at the Asia Europe Institute in Universiti Malaya. He graduated with B.A. (Hons) from Monash University and a PhD from the University of Pennsylvania in 1973. 4
BJØRN TAALE SANDBERG Senior Vice President, Head of Telenor Research, Telenor Group Bjørn Taale joined Telenor in 2000 and is currently the Senior Vice President and Head of Telenor Research. Telenor Research is the internal scientific research unit of the Telenor Group that focuses on Next Generation Networks (5G), Artificial Intelligence and Customer and Competitive trends. Prior to his present assignment, he served as CEO of AeroMobile Ltd (UK), Chief Marketing Officer in Telenor Pakistan, and Head of Strategy for Telenor Mobile Communications. Bjørn Taale holds a Master of Science in Computer Science from the University of Oslo and Master of Management from Oslo Business School. TAKEHIRO NAKAMURA Senior Vice President, 5G Laboratories, NTT Docomo Mr. Takehiro Nakamura joined NTT Laboratories in 1990. He is now SVP and General Manager of the 5G Laboratories in NTT DOCOMO, Inc. Mr. Nakamura has been engaged in the standardization activities for the W-CDMA, HSPA, LTE/LTE-Advanced and 5G at ARIB in Japan since 1997. He has been the Acting Chairman of Strategy & Planning Committee of 5G Mobile Communications Promotion Forum(5GMF) in Japan since October 2014. Mr. Nakamura has also been contributing to standardization activities in 3GPP since1999, including as a contributor to 3GPP TSG-RAN as chairman from April 2009 to March 2013. He is also very active in standardization of C-V2X/Connected Car in ARIB and ITS Info-communications Forum in Japan. He is now a leader of Cellular System Task Group of ITS Info-communications Forum. 5
DR. KAIZHI TANG Chief Technology Officer, IOT Smartech Group, China KAIZHI TANG PhD. is currently the CTO of IOT Smartech Group, China in charge of applying 5G technology to many business scenarios. At Alibaba, China, Dr. Tang was one of Chief Big Data Scientists where he applied the data mining and artificial intelligence methods to Alibaba’s big data as well as Chinese economic and financial data. Prior to Alibaba, Dr. Tang spent ten years at Intelligent Automation Inc. (IAI) in Maryland. DR JACK ROWLEY Senior Director, Research and Sustainability, Global System for Mobile Communication Association (GSMA) Jack Rowley, Ph.D., is the Senior Director for Research and Sustainability and works in the Advocacy Department of the GSMA. He is responsible for technical and policy activities related to the safety of mobile communications and responsible environmental practices. He supports the global GSMA EMF and Health working group and contributes to the work of the GSMA Europe EMF and Health group. Jack has been a member of national and international working groups and contributed to the UNEP activity that lead to the first international guidelines for environmentally sound management of used and end-of-life mobile phones. He has 30-years of experience in the telecommunications industry and joined GSMA in 2000. He had previously worked with Telstra (Australia) primarily in the Research Laboratories, where he rose to the position of manager of radio communications research with special responsibility for EMF issues. He holds an Electronics Engineering Degree with first class honours from the University of Limerick (Ireland) and a Ph.D. from the RMIT University (Australia). He is a senior member of the IEEE and a member of the Bioelectromagnetics Society. 6
TAREQ AMIN Director and Chief Technology Officer, Rakuten Mobile, Inc. As the first Chief Technology Officer of the newly established Rakuten Mobile, Inc., Tareq Amin is leading the design and roll out of the company’s next-generation cloud-native mobile network in Japan. Amin’s career in the mobile network industry spans for almost two decades, and prior to joining Rakuten in 2018, he was a key contributor to the transformation of the mobile industry in India as Senior Vice President of Technology Development and Automation for Reliance Jio. He had also served as Vice President of Carrier Solutions for Huawei and as Senior Director of National Planning and Performance at T-Mobile. Amin holds a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and Physics from Portland State University in Oregon. WOOHYUK CHOI Director, Ministry of Science and ICT, Republic of Korea Woohyuk Choi holds a Bachelor of Computer Science degree from Seoul National University. He has 24 years of working experience in the Korean government including the Ministry of Information and Communications; Korea Communications Commission; Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning; and currently the Ministry of Science and ICT. As the Korean government recognises the fact that the fastest player can take advantage of 5G markets, Mr. Choi as the Director of ICT and Broadcasting Technology Policy Division (2017-2018) was placed in charged for the first ever 5G commercialisation and this has contributed to the launching of world’s first commercial 5G mobile networks in 2019. As Director of ICT Policy Division (current), he established the ‘5G+ Strategy’. Now, he actively supports new 5G-based industries and private sector-led market revitalisation to maximise the impact of early 5G commercialisation. 7
FREDA LIU Producer/ Presenter, BFM Freda Liu presents on Enterprise over BFM covering SMEs, technology to personal development. Freda has conducted over 5000 interviews and some prominent names Stephen Covey, former GE CEO Jack Welch to Wikileaks founder Julian Assange. She was previously the Communications Manager for IBM Asia Pacific. Her other interests include moderating/ emceeing corporate events, writing and she has authored five books called “PR Yourself” and “Shake & Spear Your Business: The Romeo & Juliet Way,” Bursting Fixed Mindsets and “In Your Skin”. She was awarded the ASEAN Rice Bowl Awards for Malaysia Startup Journalist Of The Year and a nominee for MaGIC’s Social Enterprise journalist. Freda is a member of the National Association of Women Entrepreneurs Malaysia (NAWEM) and the Malaysian Association of Professional Speakers (MAS). MOHAMAD IDHAM NAWAWI Chief Executive Officer, Celcom Axiata Berhad Mohamad Idham Nawawi was appointed as the CEO of Celcom Axiata Berhad on 1 September 2018. Prior to his appointment, Idham served as the Group Chief Corporate Officer in Axiata Group Berhad. At Axiata, Idham’s responsibility spans across six operating companies in ASEAN and South Asia. He had built relationships and advocacy programmes with the government, regulators and other stakeholders at the highest level, in addition to leading the Axiata Transformation Programme 2.0. He was also instrumental in establishing the RM100 million Axiata Digital Innovation Fund. Idham also brings with him a good deal of board experience, having served the Celcom and Axiata Boards since 2012. A Chevening Scholar, Idham holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from University of Rochester, New York, USA, and received his Master’s in Communications Management (MBA in Telecommunications) from the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland. 8
ALBERN MURTY Chief Executive Officer, Digi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd Prior to his appointment as Chief Executive Officer of Digi in 2015, Albern served at the same company as Chief Operating Officer. Since joining Digi in 2002, he was in various roles for Project Planning and Controls, Product Management and Product Development, Head of Strategy and New Business, Acting Co- Chief Marketing Officer, and Chief Marketing Officer. Before Digi, his previous experience includes business and commercial management roles in Lucent Technologies across the Asian region. Albern holds a Bachelor of Science in Marketing and Advertising Management from Portland State University, Oregon, USA. SURESH SIDHU Chief Executive Officer, edotco Group Suresh Sidhu has been Chief Executive Officer of edotco Group since August 2014. edotco operates and manages a regional portfolio of over 29,900 towers across core markets of Malaysia, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Laos and Philippines. Prior to joining edotco, Suresh was Chief Corporate and Operations Officer of Celcom Axiata Berhad. He had also previously held senior roles at Dialog in the Axiata Group. In addition, his previous work experience includes Maxis, Boston Consulting Group, and Sime Darby Berhad. Suresh holds an undergraduate degree in Natural Sciences from Cambridge University and an MBA from INSEAD. 9
GOKHAN OGUT Chief Executive Officer, Maxis Berhad Gokhan joined Maxis in September 2018 as the Chief Operating Officer. He first focused on strengthening the core operations of the business to deliver innovative products and services in an ever increasing competitive core mobile market. In April 2019, Gokhan had moved into the CEO position, driving Maxis’ new ambition to become Malaysia’s leading converged solutions company. Prior to Maxis, Gokhan ran his own consultancy firm based in Turkey, offering management and marketing consultancy services in Europe and the Middle. From 2009 to 2016, he was with Vodafone Turkey, where he held senior roles- his first position was Chief Marketing Officer, then raised to Chief Consumer Business Officer in 2011 and eventually the Chief Executive Officer between 2013 and 2016. Before Vodafone, Gokhan was in senior marketing as well as general management roles with a number of large and well-known companies like Danone and Procter & Gamble, holding positions that had domestic as well as global responsibilities in Turkey, the United States of America, and France. Gokhan has an Industrial Engineering degree from the Bogazici University of Turkey, as well as an MBA from the University of Illinois, Chicago. DATO’ NOOR KAMARUL ANUAR NURUDDIN Managing Director/ Group Chief Executive Officer, Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) Dato’ Noor Kamarul was appointed Managing Director/ Group CEO of Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) in June 2019. He has over 30 years experience in the telecommunications and IT industry in the region. Before joining TM, he held several senior management positions in Celcom Axiata Berhad, including Chief Technology Officer, Chief Information Technology and Transformation Officer, and Chief Customer and Programme Officer. He started his career as an engineer in Jabatan Telekom Malaysia in 1983 and held a senior management position in an international telco for more than 3 years prior to joining Celcom. 10
WONG HEANG TUCK Chief Executive Officer, U Mobile Sdn Bhd Wong Heang Tuck first joined U Mobile as Chief Operating Officer in 2013 and was officially appointed as Chief Executive Officer in April 2014. Heang Tuck’s leadership and strategic vision has helped steer U Mobile’s revenue and market growth to outperform the industry average. He has more than two decades of experience in finance, business and corporate development. Prior to joining U Mobile, Heang Tuck was Chief Financial Officer of WBL Corporation Limited, KS Energy Limited as well as PT Indosat. He holds an MBA from Imperial College, London, and a Bachelor of Engineering (First Class Honours) in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Manchester. WING K. LEE Chief Executive Officer, YTL Communications Sdn Bhd As CEO of YTL Communications, Wing and his team built one of the largest all-4G, all-IP networks in Malaysia with nationwide coverage despite being one of the youngest national operators. Prior to YTL, Wing spent over 17 years in the United States of America in leadership positions building the first nationwide fiber optics network (Sprint – Chief Architect); the first nationwide wireless data network (Sprint PCS – Chief Technologist), and the first large-scale 4G network (Sprint-Nextel XOHM – Director of Product Development). Recognised as Asian American Engineer of the Year during the 2002 U.S. National Engineers Week, Wing holds 33 U.S. Patents, along with Singapore and Korea patents. He attended the University of Texas at Austin and MIT. 11
