WELCOME
We look forward with great optimism for 2022 and
for the future of Jazz in our community.

It gives us great pleasure to present the 59th National Jazz Festival.
Once again Covid has had a major influence this year and the festival
is now taking place over New Zealand’s first Matariki public holiday
weekend. This is an exciting alternative and we are eager to present a
new dynamic to the Downtown Carnival. Instead of the usual outdoor
stages on the Strand we will move the action into the bars and cafes. Jeff Baker
We are also delighted to include ‘Jazz at the Mount’ on Mount TAURANGA JAZZ
Mainstreet on Matariki Friday. SOCIETY PRESIDENT

We will again be showcasing the best of local talent and, as last year
showed, the acts are of international standard and are a testament
to the depth of talent we have in New Zealand. We welcome the
                                                                                     Check our
many hundreds of students from around New Zealand who come to website for the latest
compete in the National Youth Jazz Competition. Now in its 44th year, event information
we cannot wait to see these young people performing with passion and
vibrance. Of course, none of this would be possible without the support
of our sponsors and funders, a special thank you to Tauranga City JAZZ.ORG.NZ
Council, TECT and our new principal festival partner, Port of Tauranga.

Kia ora koutou jazz lovers!
The 2022 National Jazz Festival is the 59th to be hosted right here in the
heart of Tauranga. The festival is a musical treasure trove and I’m delighted
to welcome jazz fans to one of the city’s great, home-grown events, which
due to Covid-19, is being held over the Matariki long weekend this year.

Take a look at the programme and you’ll understand why the festival
has such a loyal following. It literally offers something for everyone,
featuring some of New Zealand’s top jazz musicians in a range of
settings, including the Hurricane Party and the two-day Downtown Anne Tolley
Carnival in the CBD. It is also a showcase for some of the very best
                                                                                  COMMISSION CHAIR
emerging jazz players from across Aotearoa, who are here to take part TAURANGA CITY COUNCIL
in the National Youth Jazz Competition.

Events like this play a key part in promoting the cultural, social and economic wellbeing of our city. That’s
why Tauranga City Council is proud to continue its close association with this iconic festival. On behalf
of the community, I extend a very warm welcome to all of our visitors. Please enjoy some musical magic
with us and while you’re here, sample some delicious local cuisine, enjoy our beautiful beaches (which are
spectacular even in winter), and check out the many attractions of New Zealand’s fastest growing city.
