WELCOME We look forward with great optimism for 2022 and for the future of Jazz in our community. It gives us great pleasure to present the 59th National Jazz Festival. Once again Covid has had a major influence this year and the festival is now taking place over New Zealand’s first Matariki public holiday weekend. This is an exciting alternative and we are eager to present a new dynamic to the Downtown Carnival. Instead of the usual outdoor stages on the Strand we will move the action into the bars and cafes. Jeff Baker We are also delighted to include ‘Jazz at the Mount’ on Mount TAURANGA JAZZ Mainstreet on Matariki Friday. SOCIETY PRESIDENT We will again be showcasing the best of local talent and, as last year showed, the acts are of international standard and are a testament to the depth of talent we have in New Zealand. We welcome the Check our many hundreds of students from around New Zealand who come to website for the latest compete in the National Youth Jazz Competition. Now in its 44th year, event information we cannot wait to see these young people performing with passion and vibrance. Kia ora koutou jazz lovers! The 2022 National Jazz Festival is the 59th to be hosted right here in the heart of Tauranga. The festival is a musical treasure trove and I’m delighted to welcome jazz fans to one of the city’s great, home-grown events, which due to Covid-19, is being held over the Matariki long weekend this year. Take a look at the programme and you’ll understand why the festival has such a loyal following. It literally offers something for everyone, featuring some of New Zealand’s top jazz musicians in a range of settings, including the Hurricane Party and the two-day Downtown Anne Tolley Carnival in the CBD. It is also a showcase for some of the very best COMMISSION CHAIR emerging jazz players from across Aotearoa, who are here to take part TAURANGA CITY COUNCIL in the National Youth Jazz Competition. Events like this play a key part in promoting the cultural, social and economic wellbeing of our city. That’s why Tauranga City Council is proud to continue its close association with this iconic festival. On behalf of the community, I extend a very warm welcome to all of our visitors. ELLA & JOE Be inspired by the music of Ella Fitzgerald and Joe Pass Ella and Joe is brought to you with an Wed 22 June epic performance from Mandy Meadows Baycourt Community & Arts Centre and Chris Williamson. X Space Transport yourself to New York’s Carnegie Hall, where distinguished guitarist Joe Pass and Ella Fitzgerald first performed together, resulting in Showtime: 6pm multiple studio albums and a duo to die for. The daughter of a ditch digger and a laundry lady, Duration: 70 min Ella Fitzgerald became one of the most popular jazz singers of all time, dubbed “The First Lady of Song”. MIDGE MARSDEN Midge is the ultimate act when it comes to a dynamic night of Rhythm & Blues. Wed 22 June New Zealand’s legendary music icon Midge Marsden needs no introduction... Baycourt Community & Arts Centre Addison Theatre Midge’s career spans five decades, and during that time he has played thousands of concerts in New Zealand and introduced several generations of Kiwi’s Showtime: 8pm to the Rhythm & Blues. An early career change and passion for R & B and roots music led a sixteen-year-old Midge to join the 1960’s Duration: 90 mins band ‘Bari and the Breakaways’. At the end of the 60’s Midge joined the NZBC working in radio, however music performance pulled him in again with the Wellington cult band ‘The Country Flyers’; followed by Admission several years in Australia with ‘The Phil Manning Band’. $49* General Admission On return to New Zealand in the mid 80’s he began a solo career forming ‘The Midge Marsden Connection’ $42* Concession and then ‘The Midge Marsden Band’. $42* Early Bird This resulted in several albums and a loyal fan base $40* Jazz Society Members and following. EVA - THE SONGS OF EVA CASSIDY Interpreted through the spine-tingling voice of Caitriona Fallon. Twenty-five years on, Eva Cassidy’s Thu 23 June music is as timeless as ever. Baycourt Community & Arts Centre A voice that was uniquely soulful, she connected X Space emotionally with the world, bringing interpretations of jazz, folk and blues music and a version of Over the Rainbow, which arguably is the best the world Showtime: 6pm had ever heard. This show pays homage to a legend. Featuring former lead vocalist of “Riverdance The Show” World Tour, Caitriona Fallon. BLACK & GOLD Tauranga Big Band - a big band with big heart and great tunes. Thu 23 June The Tauranga Big Band returns to Addison Theatre to present their new Baycourt Community & Arts Centre Addison Theatre show “Black & Gold”. One of NZ’s most highly acclaimed Big Bands, Showtime: 8pm the Tauranga Big Band will blow you away with performances of a variety of Big Band classics from the great bands of Kenton, Basie, and Rich. THE JOE KAPTEIN QUARTET A showcase of some of New Zealand’s exceptional young talent... A show not to be missed - emerging Sat 25 June original jazz at its’ best. Baycourt Community & Arts Centre Grand Bacharachian orchestration, cosmic mid-70s X Space jazz, pop and funk, krautrock, and Keith Jarrett are among the inspirations for pianist / keyboardist and composer Joe Kaptein’s current musical project Showtime: 6pm ’The Joe Kaptein Quartet’. Since arriving in Auckland from Whangarei, Joe graduated from jazz school and has been developing, Duration: 70 mins recording and producing an album of his own music, No interval overdubbing all the instruments himself at home. THE HURRICANE PARTY Swing the night away with our groovy jazz acts. The National Jazz Festival’s Hurricane Fri 24 June Party is back in full swing this year, with a Totara St. great line-up of quality ‘groove-meisters’ 11 Totara Street, Mount to get everyone dancing the night away. Maunganui Featuring Miho’s Jazz Orchestra (MJO), a dynamic jazz ensemble led by Japanese-born New Zealander Miho Wada on flute and saxophone, performing 100% 8 – 11pm original music.
