Welcome! 1 “BETTER IN BLACKALL” is now, beyond any doubt, and has become a well-used phrase around a large slice of Queensland. Everything about this festival is homegrown and as usual very proudly presented to you as a celebration of who we are, where we are. You will be, I am sure left in no doubt as to why we are. This festival was conceived and nurtured to be what it is today under the banner of the Heartland Festival, a celebration of our people, arts and culture. The Better in Blackall Festival is now the continued version of that same concept. The Blackall Tambo region is steeped in the unique Australian bush heritage and is literally home to the very first two towns in western Queensland (both towns are over 150 years old) to start that culture that has helped define this Nation of ours what it is today. For example, it is only here in the Blackall-Tambo Region, that we can boast we are the birthplace of the Australasian Circus industry, thanks to the Perry Brothers and the wonderful hard work and vision of one young Blackall girl. Mary Ellen Atkins, a previous resident of Blackall, ran away to join the Perry Bros Circus and went on to spawn so many other famous Australian circus troupes. Our base product is, and will always be, amongst the world’s best broadacre pastoral produce, wool, beef, meat sheep, goats, horses and our greatest asset is beyond doubt, our people. The friendly, honest, caring, resilient and proud community of the Blackall Tambo region, in true country hospitality, are very keen to welcome you to the 2021 BETTER IN BLACKALL festival so you can be a part of what we are all about. Please, relax and help us celebrate, thanks to the never-ending hard work of the wonderfully engaged Better in Blackall Festival committee. Cr Andrew Martin Mayor Blackall-Tambo Regional Council
2 Message from the Premier & Minister Welcome to Blackall and to the Better in Blackall Festival, as we continue to celebrate the Year of Outback Tourism. This four-day festival brings to life the imagery created by the #betterinblackall Instagram movement, which promotes and celebrates the heritage of Blackall, while adding value to the Matilda Way. There are plenty of arts and cultural experiences and local produce to enjoy. Queensland’s Outback is one of Australia’s most beautiful regions, and the Year of Outback Tourism continues to showcase its many experiences, opportunities to explore, and amazing flora and fauna. It is also a great opportunity to meet many wonderful Queenslanders along the way! The Hon Annastacia Palaszczuk MP At this time, we are all mindful of the economic challenges Premier of Queensland of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The Queensland Government continues to work with Queenslanders throughout the State so we can unite and recover for Queensland jobs. We have strengthened our support for the tourism industry because it is important to Blackall, to Outback Queensland and to the Queensland economy. Tourism is a major industry for Queensland, and a strong contributor for Outback Queensland’s regional economy. That is why the Queensland Government is delighted to work with Better in Blackall Incorporated. Together, we are supporting Queenslanders and creating jobs for Queenslanders. More than 50 events and experiences have been supported by the Queensland Government’s Year of Outback Tourism Events Program, and these emphasise the outstanding choice offered by Outback Queensland, for Queenslanders and for visitors to our great State. The Hon Stirling Hinchliffe MP We hope you enjoy the Better in Blackall Festival, along with Minister for Tourism Industry Development and everything else Blackall has to offer. Innovation and Minister for Sport Share your photos, post your stories, tell your friends, and make plans to head back to Queensland’s Outback.
