Mission Statement Showcasing the work of its members and regional artists through annual exhibitions, The New Haven Paint & Clay Club actively supports, encourages, and promotes exploration of and involvement with the visual arts in the Greater New Haven area and beyond. The Club further engages local communities by sharing loaned artworks from its Permanent Collection, and offers merit awards, scholarships, free programs and lectures and other art related activities. History of The New Haven Paint & Clay Club In May of 1900, several New Haven artists met to create an organization that would promote and sponsor group art exhibitions, and the New Haven Paint & Clay Club was formed. The first exhibition was in December with 107 artworks by 27 artists. For over a century now, the Club has sponsored annual art exhibits in New Haven, offering artists the opportunity to show their work, and affording the public a chance to see original contemporary artwork. It is one of the oldest art groups in the United States. The first site for Club exhibits was the Yale School of the Fine Arts, where many of the Club’s founders taught. For the next thirty years the Annual exhibits were held at the New Haven Public Library. In 1961, when the historic John Slade Ely House opened as an art gallery, the Club’s shows were held there. Since 2015 the exhibits have been held elsewhere in the New Haven area. The Club sponsors two art shows each year: an Active Members Exhibit, usually in the fall, and the Open Juried Art Exhibition in the spring, which is one of the most prestigious shows in the Northeast, awarding over $5,000 in prizes. Judges for these two shows are professional artists, museum curators and directors.
120th Annual Juried Art Exhibition Juror of Selection and Awards Hollis Dunlap Hollis Dunlap was born in 1977 in Northern Vermont in the USA. He became interested in drawing and painting the human figure around the age of 14. After studying painting in high school, he went on to study at the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts, graduating in 1999 after painting and drawing the figure extensively for four years. While an undergraduate, he was the first painter to be awarded First Prize at New York's National Arts Club student exhibition for two consecutive years. Hollis was the recipient of the John Stobart Fellow- ship, awarded each year to a graduating student in recognition of outstanding work, and he is also a 2 time grantee of the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation. More recently, he has become interested in a mix of modern and classical elements in his work. He has had solo exhibitions in New York, Boston, San Francisco, and Miami, and currently paints and teaches painting in Southeastern CT.
