Welcome to the City of Salinas Library and Community Services Department! Summer is a time for exploration and fun. We hope you will enjoy the wonderful programs we have in store for you and your family during the summer break. Whether you are looking to participate in our Summer Reading Program at the Library, or the various enrichment and sports programs offered through Recreation, this guide will help you to plan an exciting summer. The Department has been busy the past few months on the planning front. Many of you may be aware that we have been working on a Parks, Recreation and Library Master Plan for the past two years. We appreciated hearing from you through this process and look forward to the City Council adopting this plan soon. In January, we initiated a Public Art Master Plan and many of you may have participated in the survey, pop-ups, stakeholder discussions and community forums that were held in February. We look forward to completing this planning effort in the coming months. New facilities are also on the way. The new El Gabilan Library is under construction and we expect to have it completed in December. This state-of-the art 21,000 square-foot building will create a safe and welcoming environment where children and families can explore, engage and learn. The Sherwood Recreation Center, formerly the Municipal Pool, will open this summer and provide opportunities for health, wellness and allow our youth sports programs to grow. We look forward to serving you this summer at one of our libraries or recreation centers. Please let us know how we are doing and what steps we can take to better serve you and the community.
