LOWER IMPORTS, DEMAND, AND RISING FARM INCOME EFFECTING PRICING With the rise in commodity prices and lower stock levels, crop nutrient manufacturers Jim Boyle Crop Nutrients & Crop Protection Mgr C: 507.227.1921 have taken multiple increases since fall. Over the past six months imports of crop jboyle@farmward.net nutrients from Europe and Asia have been less, as the energy necessary to manufacture product was used as a source of heat for the cold weather conditions they were experiencing. Also, traditional imports from Morocco and Russia have been reduced due to the current import tariffs. Those imports are necessary to fulfill U.S. demand and keep nutrients in balance for global production. The lack of product through imports, along with “The lack of rising farm income and the strong fall demand, has lowered crop nutrient stocks to levels which will support the current prices through planting and side dress season. However, product through manufacturers are monitoring the additional demand necessary to get through spring and imports, along with when that demand is over, they will have a better handle on world nutrient stocks as we start to fill our inventory for fall demand which normally begins in July. rising farm income Fall contracting available and the strong fall As we look towards the 2022 growing season, we will offer fall crop nutrient contracts demand, has lowered throughout the spring and summer months for growers who want to lock-in crop nutrients for the fall application season. For example, there is a shortage of boxes, plastic jugs, and iron for the cage tanks we utilize. Just to give you an idea of why the industry is experiencing these shortages, one of our suppliers gave me this statistic last week: normally, trucking firms have two loads scheduled per truck and currently, they are now at a level of 5 – 6 loads per truck. The demand for freight over the next few months, as well as rising energy prices, are encouraging all of us to get our needs on hand as soon as possible to hedge against the increase in prices. Rest assured, Farmward is doing this as well in order to meet your needs prior to the start of the growing season. Markets have been inverted meaning the demand for grains is upfront and nearby. How long this will last depends on several factors, including but not limited to, South American production, transportation strikes in Brazil, export demand, U.S. dollar valuation, U.S. crop production, USDA monthly reports, and swine disease in China, just to mention a few. We recommend you talk with your ULTIGRAIN® to put your grain marketing ideas and plans in motion. Volatile Futures Spreads Along with volatile rallying markets, comes volatile futures spreads. It isn’t uncommon to see inverted spreads in the soybean market at various times of the year, but it is historically uncommon to see an inverted corn market, at least as of late due to ample U.S. ending stocks. Old crop spreads will be imperative to direct you when to haul your grain stored on Jalen Pietig the farm, as the current corn and soybean markets have shown, they want your grain now Grain Marketing Advisor rather than later this spring or summer. Interest costs are a key factor in that decision as O: 507.249.3196 well. Remember, 5% interest at $5.00 corn is about 2 cents/month, while the same interest C: 507.430.4307 on $13.00 beans comes out to 5 ½ cents/month! There certainly is a cost to holding grain, jpietig@farmward.net especially in a flat or inverted market. Morgan Need to watch December – July Corn Spread Another key spread to watch, specifically for producers with on-farm storage, will be the December 2021 – July 2022 corn spread. As of this writing it sits around 11 cents, hardly enough of a carry to incentivize you to store your corn 8 months post-harvest. If prices stay supported into the spring and summer months, there is a good chance that producers will go into fall with more grain forward contracted than they’ve been used to the last handful of years. As you forward contract more grain than you plan to deliver in the fall, you have to decide whether to hedge that grain for spring or summer 2022 delivery or keep hedges/sales in December 2021 futures. At current spreads, most will keep hedges in the December 2021 time slot and roll those positions to July 2022 futures if the spread moves to more historical levels (25-30 cents carry). If the spread never widens, the market is telling you it wants your grain at harvest or shortly thereafter. Listen to the market! If you have any questions regarding futures spreads or ways to use them to your advantage, please reach out to your ULTIGRAIN. When spreads become volatile like this year, we tend to hear about more risky spread recommendations from marketing professionals. We highly recommend you talk these through with someone before you take on any additional, sometimes substantial, risk for your operation. Guaranteed Minimum Price Contracts offer a sound marketing tool Guaranteed minimum price contracts performed very well these past several months and those that owned them, did a great job of managing them by taking money out of the market as it went higher, and are still being managed today. They are a sound marketing tool that excel when we have markets like we have just witnessed. They allow you to generate income, put in a floor and participate when the market moves higher. Give this contract some thought to use on a percentage of your crop in future marketing considerations. FARMWARD INSIGHT 12 SPRING • 2021
