CONDITIONAL/PROVISIONAL ADMISSION Most admission decisions are offered as “conditional” or “provisional” what does this mean? It is expected that you maintain or meet certain requirements to avoid having your offer of admission rescinded Example: CSULB Conditional and Provisional Admission UC system information on “provisional admission” It is important that you pass your remaining courses to avoid an issue with admission decisions! ➢If you are faced with extenuating circumstances, contact the campuses and advocate for yourself. ➢Update campuses with new/changing information
RECEIVED A DENIAL NOTICE? Visit respective university webpage with denial information Example: Cal Poly SLO “Admission Decision Appeals” Example: UCLA “Appeals to Admission Decisions” Review all information to determine if an appeal is possible and if you have a valid reason to appeal Have appeal letter reviewed before submitting Be sure to submit ALL required documents by the given deadline Guarantee at the CSU If you are denied to all CSU campuses to which you applied, you WILL be offered admission at another CSU campus as long as you meet minimum admissions- this is called “redirection.” 60 transferable semester units Complete Golden Four requirements Have a minimum 2.0 GPA or higher in all transfer coursework Be in good standing at your last college attended Complete a minimum 30 units of CSU general education
WAITLISTS @ THE UC All campuses, except Merced, typically offer transfer waitlists for select majors. You can accept waitlist offers from multiple campuses, but you can only accept one offer of admission. Even if you accept a waitlist offer at a UC campus, you should submit a Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) to ensure you have a place to attend in the fall. The $250 SIR fee will not transfer if you decide to choose a different campus after submitting the SIR Make sure you provide additional, new information on your waitlist request such as new accomplishments & recognitions.
FINANCES & AID Review your financial aid awards carefully. Make a budget! Use the Net Cost Calculator for a projection of how much you will be paying out of pocket. If your and/or your family’s income has decreased and/or expenses have increased, contact the universities and discuss a possibly re-evaluation of your need and consequently, your award. Continue to research & apply for scholarships Remember to renew your FAFSA or CA Dream Act each year by no later than March 2.
UPCOMING FINANCIAL AID WORKSHOPS Thursday, March 11, 12-1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 15, 12-1:30 p.m. FINANCIAL AID AND SCHOLARSHIPS AFTER TRANSFER: YOU CAN AFFORD COLLEGE! Know your EFC (Expected Family Contribution)—Log in to your FAFSA/CA Dream Act App, EFC is on your Student Aid Report (SAR) Know your universities’ COA (Cost of Attendance) COA minus EFC equals financial need and determines aid amount offered Aid comes in forms of: Free aid, loans, and work study. Make a budget!
IMPORTANT REMINDERS AND DEADLINES ❑ Submit Statement of Intent to Register (SIR): To UCs by June 1 and CSUs by May 1 (some CSUs have later deadlines) CSU Important ❑ Pay fees if required Deadlines and ❑ Try to accept only one UC/CSUs Fees for Transfers ❑ Okay to accept more than one but will lose deposit, if applicable. ❑ Research now…decide by SIR deadline so as to only need to choose one. ❑ Submit in-progress transcripts if requested ❑ Apply for AHC degree(s) Deadline is April 15, 2021 ❑ Review your Financial Aid award--Usually available by April in your portal ❑ Submit FINAL transcripts, ASAP, and by appropriate deadline ❑ Attend your University Orientation! Most are held in June and July, some in August.
CONSIDER HOUSING OPTIONS Starting exploring all options now (including childcare if applicable) Use campus and community resources Leave on-campus housing option open! Research the housing process, deadlines, cancellation policy and deposit amounts Use a calendar/phone to ensure deadlines are met! Submit on-campus housing application by deadline Determine monthly and semester cost for housing to build into your personal student budget.
SUCCESSFUL TRANSITIONS Be prepared for “transfer shock,” practice sound time management skills. Stay organized. Make connections here and there--Network! Create LinkedIn Account! Keep your mailing and email address current here and there--check email and portals regularly! Become familiar with the academic environment at a university Get involved at your university and surrounding community Look for potential clubs, organizations, jobs/internships related to your major Know what impostor syndrome is and don’t let it set in—it happens frequently, it’s normal. A student speaks on imposter syndrome ~ Article on impostor syndrome Stay focused Join the AHC Transfer Connections—a closed group on Facebook Attend all transfer events if possible Open houses, Spring Admitted Students Day, etc.—March-April Transfer Celebration- May 20, 2021 Commencement—May 21, 2021 New Student Orientation- most likely virtual
NEXT STEPS REMINDERS: ❑ Request the Transfer Recognition Award once you have decided to which campus you will transfer. ❑ Search for housing options and decide where you will live. ❑ Create a personal budget for yourself to determine if you will need to accept loans and/or who many hours you may need to work during the school year. ❑ Attend virtual campus pre-view days, tours, orientations, etc. ❑ Continue to check AHC & personal email as well as portals regularly.
