10 years of WOOD CONFERENCE in Cape Town
More than 840 interested architects, students, planners and representatives of politics and economics took part at the 10th
WOOD CONFERENCE on February 26th 2020 in Cape Town. This number of participants satifies the 10 years anniversary for
this exclusively platform of encouragement sustainable building in South Africa.
Professionaly with a bit of southafrican charm Hannu Garny, Master of Ceremony, opened the conference at 9 am.
In his role as CEO of KURATLE GROUP welcomed Roger Kuratle the participants and explained that the promise of the idea
„Building with wood in South Africa“ from the first conference ten years ago, was kept succesfully. Thanks to this WOOD
CONFERENCE it was possible to convey sustainability to South Africa.
Swiss Ambassador H.E. Nicolas Brühl affirmed which important significance this platform with architects, planners, investors,
house builders, teachers and students has accomplished in the last ten years. His thanks goes to initiator George Kuratle.
A special honor to the organzisers were the guestwords from Minister Tertius Simers from Western Cape Goverment,
Departement of Human Settlements South Africa. His presence showed how highly appreciatet it is to create a conference like
this.
Following different projects were presented by speakers from South Africa, USA, Norway and Switzerland. A very diversified
program was arranged under the topic „WOOD THE FUTURE BUILDING MATERIAL“
Two totally different projects were presented of the architecture students Antonella Carfi & Sela Tamar Farner from Switzerland
and Calra Jooste from Cape Town.
Participants observed all these different presentations. Interchanged with each other and asked questions to Hermann Blumer
and Christoph Meier of création holz as well to Roger Kuratle and Keith Struthers and Gareth Hare at the panel discussion.
An appropriate conclusion had this conference with typical performances of young south african artists. Due to a positive
feedback during the conference, the planning of the 11th WOOD CONFERENCE on February 18th 2021 will be starting soon.
We are looking forward to seeing you again next year!
