Medical Information
Medical ePPQ’s • All athletes and staff will complete ePPQs prior to travel to confirm • Athlete is physically and mentally capable of competing • All medications and supplements so that anything that requires a TUE is identified • Important allergies, particularly food and any severe allergies • COVID vaccination status This must be completed prior to travel
COVID-19 Vaccine • World Athletics and CSC is requiring that all athletes and team staff be “fully vaccinated” ➢ Two doses of one of the following vaccines: ➢ Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZenica, Covaxin, Covishield, BIBP-Sinopharm, Sinovac ➢ One dose of the Janssen ➢ UK/CWG also recognizes the Novovax and Medicago vaccines • Athletics Canada is strongly recommending that all athletes and staff be fully vaccinated AND obtain a “booster” dose of the vaccine ➢ COVID is currently still circulating widely in Canada and the US ➢ Having 3 doses of the vaccine will ➢ Lower your risk of contracting the virus ➢ If you contract COVID, it will lower your risk of spreading the virus to another team member ➢ If you contract COVID, it will lower your risk of severe illness • If you have any questions about your vaccination status, please contact Dr. McCluskey (pmccluskey@csipacific.ca) or Dr. Kraft (skraft@csiontario.ca) ASAP
Other Vaccines • Recommended for both trips are those vaccines recommended for all travel ➢ Tetanus, diphtheria and Pertussis: ➢ Needed once every 10 years. It is routinely given in school at age 14; due again at 24yrs of age. ➢ Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR): ➢ 2 Full MMR vaccines needed for full protection. ➢ Varicella/Chicken Pox: ➢ Highly recommended if you have never had chicken pox. ➢ Hepatitis B: ➢ This has been available as a childhood immunization since the late 1980s. Important: Recommended for all travel regardless of location, so please ensure that you have had this vaccine ➢ Meningococcal: ➢ This causes meningitis and can be contacted by close contact with those infected. International outbreaks are common. ➢ Hepatitis A: ➢ Transmitted by contaminated food or water or directly by infected persons. Two doses provide protection for life. • There are no specific vaccines recommend for travel to Eugene, USA or Birmingham, UK
COVID-19 Travel • AC’s ( & the COC’s experience at Tokyo ( & Beijing ) Olympics demonstrated how well the infection control protocols prevented ANY infection during travel • We are going to continue to ask staff and athletes to: ➢ Reduce your personal contacts in the 2 days prior to travel ➢ Wear a mask during travel ➢ Bring 3-4 in case 1 or more are spoiled ➢ Wash your hands frequently. ➢ Should have at least 60% alcohol ➢ Use disinfectant wipes to wipe down seat/viewing screen ➢ Consider wearing eye protection when on your flight • It is important to be well rested on travel day so that your immune system is functioning well • Ensure that you bring appropriate fluids/food to stay hydrated/fed on the flight. It is Ok to take mask off to eat/drink but avoid doing so when others are feeding/drinking.
COVID-19 Testing • Testing at the World Championships ➢ LOC testing requirements: TBC ➢ Based on current guidelines to enter the USA, you will need a negative pre-travel COVID test (could be RAg or PCR). ➢ If there are no other LOC testing requirements, Athletics Canada is planning on additional daily testing for the 4 days after arrival • Testing for the CWG ➢ LOC testing requirements: ➢ Pre-Travel PCR required (timing TBD) ➢ Daily PCR testing ➢ Canadian CWG recommending testing 5-10 days prior to LOC requirement for pre-travel PCR ➢ To avoid any “surprise positives” ➢Athletes that test positive will be isolated for minimum 5 days ➢ LOC protocols (TBD) will dictate if you can train and/or compete ➢ There is a Results Committee that will review each positive, case by case
COVID-19 Testing (Pre-Event) • Any symptoms that could be COVID (respiratory, gastrointestinal) and occur between now and when you travel should be tested to confirm if it is COVID ➢ You can travel if you’ve had a prior positive and are deemed to be not infectious. ➢ Persistent Positives are common and so you may need a medical letter that indicates ➢ The day you began to have symptoms ➢ The day of your positive test ➢ What kind of test (rapid antigen vs PCR, home test vs done at a testing clinic) ➢ The day your symptoms resolved as you will not be able to travel until major symptoms have resolved ➢ Major symptoms: Fever, muscle aches, shortness of breath ➢ Your full vaccination status (ie dates of vaccines) • When onsite, AC’s primary goal for any positive result (real or false) is to ensure the health of the individual and their close contacts. We will ➢ Isolate all individuals after a positive result ➢ Review all close contacts on a case by case basis to ensure we take appropriate steps to mitigate any potential risk of spread of COVID within the team ➢ Ensure close medical monitoring, particularly if someone develops symptoms ➢ Take steps immediately to arrange for confirmatory tests. • Our COVID protocols are meant to minimize the number of “close contacts”
Anti-Doping • Please keep your where-abouts on ADAMS up to date ➢ You must be available for testing from the date of arrival to your departure from training camp/competition ➢ There are penalties for avoiding or refusing tests. • World Champs address: ➢ Training camp: accommodation TBA ➢ Eugene: accommodation TBA • Birmingham address: ➢ Training camp: n/a ➢ Birmingham: must specify the village, building name and room number • Reminder ➢ You are responsible for anything you ingest ➢ Please report all supplements/medications in the ePPQ so they can be reviewed by the team physician ➢ Global Dro is a site that you can use to check about the status of any medication ➢ It does not provide the status for supplements ➢ GlobalDRO.com
General medical concerns: Eugene/Birmingham • None in either location ➢ No concerns with water and food quality ➢ Standard of medical care is high • ALLERGIES ➢ Athletes with allergies to pollens (even minor allergies) should be prepared for an increase in their allergy symptoms ➢ Bring your allergy medications with you (and report them on your ePPQ) ➢ If you have moderate spring/summer allergies, consider starting your allergy medications prior to coming to Eugene • LOC medical support: ➢ Eugene: TBC ➢ Birmingham: complicated ➢ 3 villages with CWC having Core Staff at all 3 ➢ LOC medical support at villages • Remember that large events are a gathering place for all the world’s infections ➢ COVID and other URTIs, traveler's diarrhea, STDs • COVID: over the last month ➢ USA numbers are rising. ➢ UK numbers are steady
Personal Medical Supplies • Athletes are asked to bring: • Any medications you take regularly for any medical condition ➢ Contraception, allergies, asthma, thyroid, etc ➢ Declare all medications on the ePPQ • All medications used to treat allergies ➢ Particularly severe allergies ➢ Bring your own epi-pen if you need one • Personal supply of common OTC meds ➢ Pain meds (ie ibuprophen/Advil, acetaminophen/Tylenol) ➢ GI upset/nausea (gravol, Pepto Bismol) ➢ Antibiotics if you have recurrent infections (ie recurrent bladder infections) ➢ allergies (antihistamines, nasal sprays) ➢ Colds (lozenges) ➢ Declare all on the ePPQ and check with a team physician before using
Summary: Checklist 1. Ensure your vaccinations (including COVID) are up to date • Get your COVID booster ASAP 2. Complete the ePPQ 3. If you develop possible COVID symptoms between now and when you travel, get tested for COVID and let the team physician know about the result 4. If you have a TUE • Confirm with the team physician and send them a copy • Bring a copy with you to the event 5. Bring any personal medications, including over-the-counters meds, that you might need during the event

Sport Psychology/Mental Performance – what to understand for Worlds and Commonwealth Games • Recognize that the environment is inherently stressful, and emotional • You may be expecting/thinking and planning to win a medal • You may have a minor injury, or COVID, and have missed some training • You might worry about letting your teammates down, or your coach, family, sponsors - all the “what ifs” • Understand that this normal – and the skill is to acknowledge and accept that nervousness/anxiety, and then “shift” from those kinds of thoughts to more productive ones – what you want to ”pay attention to” that will help you execute your best race/throw, to effectively manage emotions • Everyone’s job is to understand and accept - this is the environment • Look for solutions • Remain positive • Effectively manage issues as they arise • Communicate, communicate, communicate • Ask for help if you need it • Remember your purpose - personal best, top 8, a medal
