HOW TO REGISTER Online and In-Person Registration Students can register for non-credit courses through the first day of class. Online Registration: Students can submit their non-credit registration requests via our web site: https://sunysccc.edu/About-Us/Workforce-Development-and-Community- Education/WFD-CE-Course-Registration/WFD-CE-Course-Registration-Form.html any time of the day or night. In-person Registration: Students can register in-person at the Registrar’s Office, Elston Hall, Room 212, during regular College hours. For information, please call 518-381-1348. Payment for non-credit courses is expected at the time of registration. Students may pay in person by visiting the Student Business Office, located in Elston Hall 219 or via our website, https://sunysccc.edu/Admissions/Paying-for-SUNY-Schenectady/ Student-Business-Office/index.html. WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT AND COMMUNITY EDUCATION REFUND AND CANCELLATION POLICY Courses may be canceled due to insufficient enrollment. A 100% refund will be made for any course canceled by SUNY Schenectady. Every effort will be made to notify students so it is essential the WFD&CE office has correct contact information. If a student must withdraw from a non-credit course, a written request must be received TWO business days prior to the course start date via mail to SUNY Schenectady Office of Workforce Development and Community Education, 201 State Street, Schenectady, N.Y. 12305 or email at noncreditreg@sunysccc.edu. • No refunds will be granted for non-attendance of a course(s). • Once you are registered for a course(s) you are responsible for payment (tuition, fees) for the course(s) regardless of whether you attend unless you withdraw at least two business days prior to the course(s) start date. Beginning two business days prior to the start of class the refund policy is as follows: • For courses eight weeks or less no refund is available. • For courses nine weeks or longer: • Between two business days prior to the start of class and 8 hours of scheduled class time a 75% refund will be issued.* • Between 9 hours and 16 hours of scheduled class time a 50% refund will be issued.* • After 17 hours of scheduled class time no refund is available. *Refunds do not include the cost of materials, textbooks or administrative fees and will be issued in the form of a check that may take up to 21 business days to process. 4 WFD&CE
REGISTRATION CALENDAR Non-Credit classes begin throughout the semester in June, July, and August. Check specific courses in this directory for start dates. In-person registration is ongoing and students may register until the course start date. SUNY Schenectady is closed: Monday, June 20 for Juneteenth and Monday, July 4 for Independence Day. COVID RESPONSE A student vaccination mandate is now a requirement for all SUNY campuses. All students with at least one in-person class or who come to campus for any purpose must provide proof of receiving a full vaccination series, including the booster. This includes, both doses of either Pfizer or Moderna or one dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine at the time of registration. COMMUNITY EDUCATION >> ARCHAEOLOGY COMMUNITY ARCHAEOLOGY The SUNY Schenectady Community Archaeology Program (CAP) offers courses in which students can earn a non-credit Certificate of Proficiency in Archaeology as well as special topic courses. Students 16 years of age and older may enroll. Lectures, readings, discussions, field trips, and hands-on activities are among the teaching methods employed in all courses. Students learn critical thinking, analysis, and other general skills that they can apply in the field, lab, and in their personal research. They also have the opportunity to participate in local, regional, and national archaeological associations, and they can use the program as a stepping-stone to undergraduate and/or graduate degrees in anthropology and related fields. Certificate of Proficiency in Archaeology In order to earn the Certificate of Proficiency in Archaeology, students must complete six required courses and experience (see chart below). This certificate provides students an educational opportunity through classroom instruction and experience to learn about regional archaeology and acquire the knowledge and skills needed in order to pursue archaeology under professional supervision. Certificate of Advanced Study in Community Archaeology (CASCA) Students who have completed the Certificate of Proficiency in Archaeology are eligible to obtain a CASCA by successfully completing CFP 101 Independent Archaeology Project and six special topic courses. This course is mandatory for students fulfilling the 60 experience hours required for the SUNY Schenectady Community Archaeology Program (CAP) certificate. Additionally, this course is required for all students engaged in archaeological research and laboratory under a SUNY Schenectady CAP instructor’s supervision. Students must speak with an instructor before registering. INDEPENDENT ARCHAEOLOGY PROJECT CRN# 61762 June 1 – August 31 CFP 101-51 By Appointment Fee: $125 For Community Archaeology Program certificate students only. This course is necessary for all Community Archaeology Program (CAP) certificate students wishing to work on their approved archaeological products (e.g., articles for publication, exhibits, public presentations or site studies and reports) and is required for their Certificates of Advanced Study in Community Archaeology (CASCA). Students must speak with an instructor before registering. GRAVESTONE CLEANING CRN# 61789 June 4 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. CFP 123-01 Saturday Fee: $35 This course will be taught at Vale Cemetery, 907 State St., Nott Terrace, Schenectady, N.Y. 12307. Would you like to learn how to clean cemetery stones? Do you have a family plot with a stone that needs cleaning? Are you having a difficult time reading the worn lettering on a stone? Melody Howarth will show you cleaning and reading methods that work. Join Ms. Howarth at Vale Cemetery for this informative workshop. Students will be contacted with meeting instructions. Students are asked to bring gloves, bottled water and a bagged lunch. Materials fee: $10 to be paid to the instructor. Summer 2022 7
COMMUNITY EDUCATION >> KIDS AND TEENS KID & TEEN ACADEMY CSI FORENSICS CRN# 61771 June 27 – July 1 Fee: $245 CFP 347-01 Monday-Thursday 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Students, ages 10-14 years, will learn how law enforcement professionals solve crimes and analyze evidence. The class will use tools used in the field to collect evidence from mock crime scenes. Students will learn how a crime is actually solved and learn how biology, chemistry and physics play a major role in investigations. Students will use microscopes to analyze fibers, use composite, and more. GUITAR LESSONS FOR KIDS CRN# 61764 June 6 – August 12 CFP 305-01 By Appointment Fee: $295 This course, designed especially for beginners ages 6-16, will include fundamental instruction in reading notes, strumming chords to songs, and technical development. Instruction will consist of ten (10), half-hour individual lessons. Students must bring their own guitars. LEGO® ROBOTICS CRN# 61770 June 27 – July 1 Fee: $245 CFP 345-01 Monday-Thursday 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday 9 a.m.-1 p.m. With LEGOS, the possibilities are endless. This class is designed to engage students, ages 6-9 years, in hands-on investigation of STEAM concepts using everyday themes. Young engineers will learn to build and code their own personal talking robot friend. They will code its behavior and complete fun activities. The robot will interact with them and respond with facial expressions that reflect its mood. ASTRO EXPLORERS - NASA NEW! CRN# 61772 June 27 – July 1 9 a.m.-12 p.m. CFP 845-01 Monday-Friday Fee: $175 Are you ready to think and act like a NASA innovator? Students, ages 7-12, will be challenged to use creative and collaborative skills to design a mission patch, train like an astronaut, and solve real-world engineering problems. Armed with the spark of an idea, a design notebook, and physical and digital tools, teams will modify NASA technology into spinoff designs. 8 WFD&CE
COMMUNITY EDUCATION >> KIDS AND TEENS MODERN/CONTEMPORARY DANCE FOR TEENS AND ADULTS CRN# 61595 July 6 – August 24 7-8 p.m. CFP 742-51 Wednesdays Fee: $100 Weekly class will move from stretching thru a blended style incorporating elements of: classical ballet, classical modern dance (Horton, Lemon, Graham…) with a healthy dose of post-modern dance (generally a mix of theater and dance) and jazz; think Earth bound ballet with some leaps and some moves lying on the ground. Please wear stretchy clothing, have long hair pulled up in a pony tail and be prepared to dance in socks or bare foot. HANDS-ON ARCHAEOLOGY FOR KIDS CRN# 61783 July 11 – July 15 9 a.m.-3 p.m. CFP 314-01 Monday-Friday Fee: $200 Young archaeologists, ages 9-15, will have the opportunity to participate in an actual excavation at a site in the Schenectady area. They will learn the methods and skills used by archaeologists, with an emphasis on observation and deductive reasoning. Activities include defining research goals, survey, excavation, data and artifact recording, artifact identification and analysis, and presenting results. Family and friends will be invited on Friday for student presentations. Students must wear closed toed shoes with socks and bring a bagged lunch and water bottle. Students should also wear sunscreen while working outside. GAME DESIGN IN PYTHON™ W/ALBANY CAN CODE CRN# 61835 July 11 – July 14 1-4:45 p.m. CFP 846-51 Monday-Thursday Fee: $350 In this course, students will learn basic Python and apply it to the design and creation of games. The class will start with an overview of the Python programming language, a popular and easily accessible language to learn. Students will then learn to create simple games and learn how to modify existing games. Through reading and developing some games, students will get familiar with programming principles and Python language specifics. Hands-on programming will be the hallmark of this class. Students completing the course will be able to work with existing code and start to work on developing their code to modify and create their games. Students will need to bring a laptop to the class capable of running a modern browser and internet connection. Albany CanCode has a laptop lending library (based on availability) for students who do not have one. There are a limited number of laptops. There are also a limited number of scholarships available. COMMUNITY EDUCATION >> KIDS AND TEENS BAKING/COOKING FOR KIDS SECTION #1 CRN# 61765 July 11 – July 15 9 a.m.-1 p.m. CFP 308-01 Monday-Friday Fee: $200 This course will focus on measurement, basic baking techniques, and following recipe instructions in a clean, safe, and efficient manner. Young chefs, ages 9-14 years, will be encouraged to embrace their creativity while learning to produce several baked goods including rainbow decorated meringue pops, hot fudge lava cakes, and hand tossed pizzas (dough made from scratch). Young chefs are asked to bring an apron, closed-toed shoes, and a water bottle. SECTION #2 CRN# 61766 July 18 – July 22 9 a.m.-1 p.m. CFP 308-02 Monday-Friday Fee: $ 200 This course will introduce young chefs to savory cooking methods while building their confidence in the kitchen. Young chefs, ages 9-14, will learn the importance of “mis en place” and follow recipes to make hand-made mozzarella cheese, dumplings from around the world, hand-cut pasta, and more. Young chefs are asked to bring an apron, closed- toed shoes, and a water bottle. MUSICAL THEATER FOR CHILDREN/TEENS CRN# 61769 July 18 – July 29 Fee: $425 CFP 341-01 Monday-Thursday 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Do you love to act and sing? Have you ever wondered what it is like to be in a musical production? In this course, students, ages 8-14, will learn the basic techniques of acting, stage presence, proper singing techniques and vocal independence, and understanding of the theater. As they audition for roles, work on costumes/sets, and rehearse the selected musical, students will build self-confidence, cooperation, leadership, and teamwork skills. The course will end with a performance of the musical play You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown on Friday, July 29. 10 WFD&CE
COMMUNITY EDUCATION >> KIDS AND TEENS ADVANCED LEGO® ROBOTICS WITH SPIKE™ CRN# 61782 August 15 – August 19 Fee: $245 CFP 853-01 Monday-Thursday 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Students, ages 9-12 years, will use the LEGO Education SPIKE coding language, which is based on Scratch. SPIKE Prime continuously engages students, through playful learning activities, to learn to think critically and solve complex problems. Students will learn the essential STEAM and 21st century skills needed to become the innovative minds of tomorrow. Students will have the option to explore text-based coding with Python. EMERGENCY VET CRN# 61768 August 15 – August 19 Fee: $245 CFP 332-01 Monday-Thursday 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday 9 a.m.-1 p.m. This class is a young person’s ticket to the world of veterinary medicine. Young vets, ages 10-14, will have an opportunity to look into the exciting careers of real veterinarians and allow them to be involved in related hands-on activities and experiments. Each student will receive his or her own medical kit. VIDEO GAMES NEW! CRN# 61767 August 15 – August 19 Fee: $245 CFP 327-01 Monday-Thursday 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday 9 a.m.-1 p.m. In this class, students, ages 10-14 years, will explore a variety of video gaming platforms. They will create multiple video games throughout the week. Students will build their own characters and game boards, and bring their designs to life. The class will also explore the power of Virtual Reality (VR). Students will learn to create their own virtual environments and build their own 3D creations. Using Merge VR viewers, they will then explore their creations in an immersive 360° and 3D virtual environment. RED HOT ROBOTS NEW! CRN# 61780 August 15 – August 19 9 a.m.-12 p.m. CFP 873-01 Monday-Friday Fee: $175 Students, ages 7-12, will explore the fundamentals of robotics and discover how robots are used through activities and games. They will build their own Kingii Dragon Robot, which they will be able to take home at the end of the week. Students will explore the “nuts and bolts” of robots as they build simple circuits and test them, they will learn about Asimov’s Law of Robotics and how a neodymium magnet works, and build their very own circuit maze. Students will also test their robots in an obstacle course at the end of the course. Summer 2022 11

Students will explore celestial navigation and space travel, they build a galactic mobile while discovering the wonders of our solar system, navigate the skies when building their own sextant, create their own nanorovers, take home a model of Saturn and build their own rockets, which they will launch! BECOMING A YOUNG AVIATOR CRN# 61836 August 23 – August 26 8:30 a.m.-12 p.m. CFP 337-01 Tuesday-Friday Fee: $175 Instructor: Empire State Aerosciences Museum This course will be taught at the Empire State Aerosciences Museum, located at 250 Rudy Chase Dr., Glenville, N.Y. 12302. Students, ages 10-17, will spend the week at the Empire State Aerosciences Museum, located at the Schenectady County Airport in Glenville, learning about aviation and what real pilots do on the ground and in the air. In this hands-on class, students will learn about the history of aviation and aircraft design, the forces of flight – how airplanes fly (thrust, lift, drag and flight control), learn about the different parts of a plane, and learn about how helicopters fly. Students will also have an opportunity to interact with guest speakers and have a guided tour of the museum’s incredible exhibits and airpark, which features more than 20 historic military aircraft. Students will be able to get into the cockpits of some of these legendary fighter and attack aircraft. Students will also have the opportunity to work with the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Chapter 602 to become Junior EAA members, which includes a half-hour flight in an airplane. 12 WFD&CE

Learn scripting and logic statements as you create your first mods! Introductory coding will also be taught through a simulated environment inspired by Minecraft. Using a professional 3D game development software, build levels and assets inspired by popular battle royale games like Fortnite. Students can participate in eSports League matches against other schools across the country with a chance to have their levels featured in the Black Rocket master build of the game! This course includes cartoonish action and battle sequences. Student-created games will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. This course requires a 64-bit operating system. Compatible with MAC and Windows OS only. Register for Battle Royale: Make Your First Fortnite Style Video Game. Students, ages 14 and older, will practice Hombu style Aikido, which strengthens the body, mind and spirit. Aikido uses blending and redirecting techniques, Jujutsu joint locks and boxing elements that keep this martial art applicable for all individuals. Students, ages 18 and older, will learn about and practice Iaido, a modern non-combative physical and mental discipline based on the proficient use of the traditional Japanese (Samurai) sword.
