HOW TO REGISTER Online and In-Person Registration Students can register for non-credit courses through the frst day of class. Online Registration: Students can submit their non-credit registration requests via our web site: https://sunysccc.edu/About-Us/Workforce-Development-and-Community- Education/WFD-CE-Course-Registration/WFD-CE-Course-Registration-Form.html any time of the day or night. In-person Registration: Students can register in-person at the Registrar’s Ofce, Elston Hall, Room 212, during regular College hours. For information, please call 518-381-1348. Payment for non-credit courses is expected at the time of registration. Students may pay in person by visiting the Student Business Ofce, located in Elston Hall 219 or via our website, sunysccc.edu/Admissions/Paying-for-SUNY-Schenectady/Student- Business-Ofce/index.html. WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT AND COMMUNITY EDUCATION REFUND AND CANCELLATION POLICY Courses may be canceled due to insufcient enrollment. A 100% refund will be made for any course canceled by SUNY Schenectady. Every efort will be made to notify students so it is essential the WFD&CE ofce has correct contact information. If a student must withdraw from a non-credit course, a written request must be received TWO business days prior to the course start date via mail to SUNY Schenectady Ofce of Workforce Development and Community Education, 201 State Street, Schenectady, N.Y. 12305 or email at noncreditreg@sunysccc.edu. • No refunds will be granted for non-attendance of a course(s). • Once you are registered for a course(s) you are responsible for payment (tuition, fees) for the course(s) regardless of whether you attend unless you withdraw at least two business days prior to the course(s) start date. Beginning two business days prior to the start of class the refund policy is as follows: • For courses eight weeks or less no refund is available. • For courses nine weeks or longer: • Between two business days prior to the start of class and 8 hours of scheduled class time a 75% refund will be issued.* • Between 9 hours and 16 hours of scheduled class time a 50% refund will be issued.* • After 17 hours of scheduled class time no refund is available. *Refunds do not include the cost of materials, textbooks or administrative fees and will be issued in the form of a check that may take up to 21 business days to process. 4 WFD&CE
REGISTRATION CALENDAR Non-Credit classes begin throughout the semester in May, June, July and August. Check specifc courses in this directory for start dates. In-person registration is ongoing and students may register until the course start date. SUNY Schenectady is closed: Memorial Day, May 31, 2021, and Fourth of July Observed, July 5, 2021. COVID RESPONSE Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, SUNY Schenectady County Community College has moved a majority of its Summer 2021 Community Education courses, including the Kid and Teen Academy, to an online format. For Kid and Teen Academy courses that include course materials/supplies, these will be available for pickup at a pre-arranged date and time on the SUNY Schenectady campus. For in person/hybrid courses, students must follow all COVID-19 protocols; including wearing masks, maintaining social distance, temperature check, COVID entry and exit checks and participate in pool testing. COMMUNITY EDUCATION >> ARCHAEOLOGY COMMUNITY ARCHAEOLOGY The SUNY Schenectady Community Archaeology Program (CAP) ofers courses in which students can earn a non-credit Certifcate of Profciency in Archaeology as well as special topic courses. Students 16 years of age and older may enroll. Lectures, readings, discussions, feld trips, and hands-on activities are among the teaching methods employed in all courses. Students learn critical thinking, analysis, and other general skills that thy can apply in the feld, lab, and in their personal research. They also have the opportunity to participate in local, regional, and national archaeological associations, and they can use the program as a stepping-stone to undergraduate and/or graduate degrees in anthropology and related felds. Certifcate of Profciency in Archaeology In order to earn the Certifcate of Profciency in Archaeology, students must complete six required courses and experience (see chart below). This certifcate provides students an educational opportunity through classroom instruction and experience to learn about regional archaeology and acquire the knowledge and skills needed in order to pursue archaeology under professional supervision. Certifcate of Advanced Study in Community Archaeology (CASCA) Students who have completed the Certifcate of Profciency in Archaeology are eligible to obtain a CASCA by successfully completing CFP 101 Independent Archaeology Project and six special topic courses. ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESEARCH CRN# 60946 May 24 – August 31 CFP 100-51 By Appointment Fee: $30 For Community Archaeology Program certifcate students only Instructor: Louise Basa or Diana Carter This course is mandatory for students fulflling the 60 experience hours required for the SUNY Schenectady Community Archaeology Program (CAP) certifcate. Additionally, this course is required for all students engaged in archaeological research and laboratory under a SUNY Schenectady CAP instructor’s supervision. Students will have the opportunity to schedule time in the CAP lab, under the supervision of an instructor. Students must speak with an instructor before registering. INDEPENDENT ARCHAEOLOGY PROJECT CRN# 61022 May 24 – August 31 CFP 101-51 By Appointment Fee: $125 For Community Archaeology Program certifcate students only Instructor: Louise Basa This course is necessary for all Community Archaeology Program (CAP) certifcate students wishing to work on their approved archaeological products (e.g., articles for publication, exhibits, public presentations or site studies and reports) and is required for their Certifcates of Advanced Study in Community Archaeology (CASCA). PEOPLING THE PAST: INVESTIGATING IDENTITIES IN ARCHAEOLOGY CRN# 61390 June 1 – July 7 6-8:30 p.m. CFP 132-51 Tuesdays Fee: $100 Instructor: Jessica Nelson, PhD We all have objects that are important to us; ones that tell our story, represent our values, or hold special meaning for us. The same holds true for objects that people used in the past. This course is about answering the question: “Who were they?” Students will explore some of the many ways we investigate the cultural and social identities of people of the past through the material objects that we fnd in the archaeological record. Some of the topics covered will include gendered, racial, ethnic, national and class-based identities that can be explored through archaeological materials from historical North America. By uncovering these various identities, we can better understand the people of the past. Summer 2021 7
COMMUNITY EDUCATION >> KIDS AND TEENS STEM SCHOLARSHIP FOR KIDS/TEEN This STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) scholarship was established in 2017 by SIM (Society for Information Management) Albany. As part of its eforts to give back to the local community, SIM looks for opportunities to collaborate and work with academic institutions and non-proft organizations that promote STEM through their programs. The STEM scholarship will be awarded to economically disadvantaged students interested in attending STEM classes through the SUNY Schenectady Workforce Development and Community Education’s Kid and Teen Academy. The intention of the scholarship is to make it possible for economically disadvantaged students to take STEM classes by funding some or all of the cost of a class. The number of awards and award amount may vary based on the number of applicants and the type of class. Look for the STEM icon to identify STEM oferings. If you are interested in applying for the STEM scholarship for your child, please fll out the application or contact Maria C. PIANO LESSONS FOR CHILDREN AND TEENS CRN# 60941 June 7 – August 13 CFP 300-51 By Appointment Fee: $235 This course, designed especially for beginners ages 6-16, will include fundamental instruction in note reading, rhythm recognition, proper hand position, and chords. Instruction will consist of ten (10), half-hour individual lessons. Students must have a piano or keyboard at home. GUITAR LESSONS FOR KIDS CRN# 60942 June 7 – August 13 CFP 305-01 By Appointment Fee: $275 This course, designed especially for beginners ages 6-16, will include fundamental instruction in reading notes, strumming chords to songs, and technical development. COMMUNITY EDUCATION >> KIDS AND TEENS VOICE LESSONS FOR CHILDREN AND TEENS CRN# 61394 June 7 – August 13 CFP 306-51 By Appointment Fee: $235 Students will learn proper singing technique and vocal independence through solo work. Students should be 6-16 years of age. Instruction will consist of ten (10), half-hour individual lessons. MODERN/CONTEMPORARY DANCE FOR TEENS AND ADULTS CRN# 61323 June 23 – August 25 7-8 p.m. CFP 742-51 Wednesdays Fee: $120 Weekly class will move from stretching thru a blended style incorporating elements of: classical ballet, classical modern dance (Horton, Lemon, Graham…) with a healthy dose of post-modern dance (generally a mix of theater and dance) and jazz; think earth bound ballet with some leaps and some moves lying on the ground. Please wear stretchy clothing, have long hair pulled up in a pony tail and be prepared to dance in socks or bare foot. Students will learn how law enforcement professionals solve crimes and meet real professional Crime Scene Investigators. Students will use the tools used in the feld to collect evidence and learn how a crime is actually solved. They will discover how and biology, chemistry, and physics play a major role in the investigation. Sample projects include: blood analysis as well as fber, handwriting, fngerprinting, and DNA analysis. COMMUNITY EDUCATION >> KIDS AND TEENS -NEW- FOOD FRENZY – TRAVEL THE WORLD OF FOOD CRN# 61387 July 12 – July 16 1-4 p.m. CFP 842-51 Monday-Friday Fee: $155 Students ages 6-12 will “travel” around the world of food. Come with us as we discover how to draw, paint, and sculpt all the food you love and some you’ve never heard of. Get your Food Passport stamped with desserts, pizza, and exotic dishes from around the world. Supplies will be available for pick-up at a pre-arranged date and time on the SUNY Schenectady Campus. HANDS-ON ARCHAEOLOGY FOR KIDS CRN# 60945 July 12 – July 16 9 a.m.-12 p.m. CFP 314-01 Monday-Friday Fee: $125 In this online course, young archaeologists, ages 9-15, will learn about themes in archaeology, including local historical, prehistoric, and international archaeology, and the techniques and preservation methods that archaeologists use. Interactive sessions will include talks with archaeologists. Virtual tours of local and international sites are planned. Crafts related to each theme will be provided to each student. Supplies will be available for pick-up at a pre-arranged date and time on the SUNY Schenectady Campus. MUSICAL THEATER FOR CHILDREN/TEENS CRN# 60967 July 12 – July 23 12-2:30 p.m. CFP 341-01 Monday-Friday Fee: $250 Do you love to act and sing? Have you ever wondered what it is like to be in a musical production? In this course, students, ages 8-14, will learn the basic techniques of acting, stage presence, proper singing techniques, and vocal independence, and understanding of the theater. As they audition for roles, work on costumes, and rehearse the selected musical, students will build self-confdence, cooperation, leadership, and teamwork skills. The class will use Zoom and end with an online performance of the musical play presented by the class. CAMP EUREKA CRN# 61392 July 19– July 23 9 a.m.-12 p.m. CFP 940-01 Monday-Friday Fee: $175 Inspire the inventor and scientist in you. In this course, students ages 6-12 will investigate awesome inventions created before modern science really began. They will learn about Leonardo da Vinci and how his ideas predicted future inventions (e.g., catapults and trebuchets). Students will also explore the inventions of Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Edison and Rube Goldberg in order to understand that we have no limitations. Each day they will test their resourcefulness through diferent scenarios in which they must solve problems and “invent” solutions. COMMUNITY EDUCATION >> KIDS AND TEENS OLD TIME RADIO - THEATER FOR CHILDREN/TEENS CRN# 61398 July 26 – July 30 12-2 p.m. CFP 341-02 Monday-Friday Fee: $125 Come join follow actors to re-create an old time Radio Show. Students, ages 8-15, will help create the story, the characters, the dialogue, the commercial jingles and the sound efects - just like an old time Radio Show! Students will also work on improvisation skills and team building. This class will use Zoom and will end in a Zoom presentation of the fnished product. -NEW- ASTRO EXPLORERS - NASA CRN# 61389 July 26 – July 30 9 a.m.-12 p.m. CFP 845-01 Monday-Friday Fee: $175 Are you ready to think and act like a NASA innovator? Students, ages 6-12, will be challenged to use creative and collaborative skills to design a mission patch, train like an astronaut, and solve real-world engineering problems. Armed with the spark of an idea, a design notebook, and physical and digital tools, teams will modify NASA technology into spinof designs. Supplies will be available for pick-up at a pre-arranged date and time on the SUNY Schenectady Campus. -NEW- PASSPORT TO PARADISE/TROPICAL OASIS CRN# 61388 August 2 – August 6 9 a.m.-12 p.m. CFP 844-01 Monday-Friday Fee: $155 Students, ages 6-12, will submerge themselves in a fun art experience as they explore some interesting properties of water. Build a model waterslide park, paint a killer whale on canvas, design a futuristic underwater vehicle, paint with ice and draw an underwater Fish Café. Supplies will be available for pick-up at a pre-arranged date and time on the SUNY Schenectady Campus. -NEW- SCRATCH ENRICHMENT & CODING FUNDAMENTALS WITH ALBANY CAN CODE CRN# 61399 August 9 – August 13 9 a.m.-12 p.m. CFP 872-01 Monday-Friday Fee: $300 Using the educational block-coding tool, Scratch (scratch.mit.edu), students, ages 12-15, will learn fundamentals of computer science programming while creating small projects. Block-coding allows students to create programs using a LEGO-style approach or pre- built color-coded blocks that connect to form instructions, allowing students to focus on creating digital content. These projects will include games of diferent kids, interactive stories, animations, and even art. Students will be provided with step-by-step tutorials to create diferent products, but depending on comfort/skill can also create and modify on their own. In the process of creating those diferent kinds of projects, students will learn various fundamentals in programming such as variables, loops, conditionals, and events, which will transfer directly to any other form of programming.
