WINTER SERIES 6K TIME TRIALS Tuesday, 18 May 2021 DESCRIPTION: This time trial is held on the Tamaki River during the winter training months (May – September), every alternate Sunday morning from 8:00 am – 9am on the high tide. TIME TRIAL CONTROLLER: Club Captain of The Auckland Rowing Club, or an official appointed by the Club Captain. PURPOSE: The time trial is held primarily to enable Auckland Rowing Club crews to get an indication as to their fitness and training progress, over a distance of 6km by providing them with comparative, prognostic times on a fortnightly basis. Other river crews are welcome to take part – no entry fees are charged. Crews from visiting clubs do so at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety whilst participating in the time trial. The Auckland Rowing Club accepts no liability for any accidents which occur. 1
CONDITIONS OF ENTRY, SAFETY PLAN & RULES FOR GUIDANCE ABOUT THE RACE 1. This Time Trial will be conducted in accordance with the NZRA Rules of Racing and Water Safety Code except where amended by these conditions for the purposes of this Time Trial. 2. This Time Trial is over a distance of 6 kilometres. 3. The Start and Finish of the Time Trial is at The Auckland Rowing Club, see accompanying map of the course. GENERAL 4. As a safety precaution, any non-participants of this Time Trial will be discouraged from using the pontoon or ramp between 7:45 am until 8:45 am. Rowers from other Tamaki River clubs not taking part are advised not to venture beyond the Pakuranga Bridge until after this time. Any members of the public wishing to use the pontoon or ramp during this time will be discouraged from doing so until the Time Trial is over. 5. All crews wishing to taking part must record their crew entry via the online registration system. 6. The Time Trial Controller will notify participants beforehand should river conditions not be suitable for the Time Trial to take place. 7. Coxswains MUST wear lifejackets. 8. All skiffs must comply with all FISA / RNZ rules for safety (i.e., heel restraints / bow balls). Auckland Rowing Club accepts no responsibility for checking heel restraints or bow balls which shall at all times remain the responsibility of the individual crew using the skiff. 9. Each participating crew will have an identifying bow number allocated to them by the Time Trial Controller. 10. Rowers from other Tamaki clubs not taking part are advised not to venture beyond the Pakuranga Bridge until after 8:45 am. THE START 11. Each crew will be started individually beginning with the fastest (based on prognostic times) crew. 12. All crews start and finish their Time Trial on the sound of a hooter. 2
13. Crews must not engage in firm pressure rowing or undertake “practise starts” in the marshalling area. 14. Crews must obey marshalling instructions and proceed as directed by the marshall. SAFETY BOATS 15. 3x Safety boats are positioned at three points on the river, at the start / finish line, at the turning point near the southern motorway and at the Highbrook pontoon. 16. The Safety Boat positioned near the Southern motorway will follows the last crew/s back to the finish line. 17. All safety boat drivers must carry PFDs and equipment as required by the NZ Rowing Water Safety Code, have the ability to contact each other by mobile phone should an emergency arise and be suitably qualified coach boat operators. 18. Due to the distances between safety boats all crews are considered to be unaccompanied and as such must carry a PFD for each member of the crew. NAVIGATION DURING THE RACE 19. All coxswains must keep to the starboard / bow side of the river at all times. 20. Should a crew member go overboard, the crew must standby to assist recovery. 21. During any turn (e.g., around the green marker poles with 2 or more boats involved), the boat which commenced its turn first has the right of way. 22. The ability to accomplish effective and safe passing is an important aspect of successful racing. When overtaking during racing, the overtaking skiff must always pass on the stroke side (port side) of the boat being overtaken and never on the bow side of the skiff being overtaken i.e., the overtaking skiff should not pass between the skiff being overtaken and the shore. 23. The skiff being overtaken must give way to the skiff attempting to overtake by moving to their bow side / closer to the shore. This assumes that there is sufficient room to move to their bow side without incident. In the event that there is insufficient room to move to bow side the skiff being overtaken should warn the overtaking skiff that they must move further to their stroke side in order to complete the manoeuvre safely. 24. The stroke of each participating crew is responsible for keeping a lookout for overtaking crews to the stern of his/her skiff and is responsible for giving any appropriate warnings to the overtaking skiff. 3
25. In the unlikely event of wishing to overtake a powered motor vessel the overtaking skiff must give way to stroke side and should not expect the powered vessel to move. 26. At the end of the race please continue to row slowly until you are well away from the finish line. Do not stop rowing as you cross the line. 27. Respect for the safety of other rowers and their equipment must be observed at all times. SANCTIONS 28. The Auckland Rowing Club reserves the right to impose any penalties or sanctions which it considers appropriate for any transgressions of these conditions. COMMUNICATION 29. The Time Trial Controller will contact ARC crews and river clubs by email as to the rules of the Time Trial (mentioned above) and to any special circumstances which may arise. Following the Time Trial, email contact is made by the Time Trial Controller providing all participants with the results of the Time Trial. COURSE The marshalling area is just west of the ARC pontoon. When your crew is called you must start rowing so you cross the start line at race speed. The start / finish line is between the ARC flag pole and the white pole on the opposite bank. There will be a large marker buoy located mid channel on the finish line (as shown below). 4
On the way up to the motorway crews must stay on the starboard (right side of the river passing on the shore side of the green navigation pole and then around the larger orange marker buoy. On the way back to the finish line stay on the starboard side of the red and green channel markers and then around the large orange marker buoy positioned near the Highbrook pontoon. 7
