Program Manager’s Report I am thrilled to introduce this issue of our training calendar, with lots of exciting professional development opportunities for 2019. We hope that you all had an enjoyable and relaxing holiday season. Happy New Year to all of you; we look forward to seeing you in the new year!! As we move into the new year we are gearing up for our 22nd Aannual Children the Heart of the Matter Conference on January 18 & 19, 2019 and we hope to see many of you there. We are so excited that we are partnering with Delta Continuing Education to offer the Introduction to ECE - ECE Assistant program here at our office, running from January 10 – March 14. As well, there will be information sessions coming up for the Basic ECE certificate program to be offered here. Please see below for more information. Don’t forget that May is Child Care Month, a time when we can all do our part to raise public awareness, educate, celebrate and advocate for the importance of quality child care. Save the date of May 13, 2019 for our annual Child Care Provider Appreciation Evening to celebrate you and the important work you do. On another note we said goodbye to Pam Mountford, who retired at the end of December. Some of you may know Pam who had been with the CCRR for over 25 years in a variety of roles. We are sad to see her go and will miss her warmth, kindness and caring heart. We wish her well on the next chapter of her life! Please be aware the BC Child Care Maintenance Fund is closed for this fiscal year (until March 31, 2019). They are unable to process any applications that were received after September 12, 2018. It will reopen again April 1, 2019. The following statements can be found on the fund website (link below): While the ministry significantly increased the budget for the new Childcare BC Maintenance Fund in 2018/19, the fund is now fully subscribed and applications received after September 12, 2018 will not be processed. Currently, the program is only accepting applications seeking funding due to emergency circumstances. The program will re-open for all applications on April 1, 2019. Registration Policies and Procedures To reserve a space, payment must be received at the time of registration for the workshop. Registrations will not be processed until payment has been received. Post-dated cheques will not be accepted. Methods of payment: Visa and MasterCard are accepted. Payment by debit, cheque or cash is available for in-person registration. Registrations are accepted by telephone, by mail and online with payment. Workshop cancellations. Requests for workshop cancellations MUST be received at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled workshop date. Cancellation requests received before the 48 hour deadline will receive a credit voucher to be used towards future workshops at Child Care Options within the year. No refunds will be issued. Course cancellations. Requests for course cancellations MUST be received at least 72 hours prior to the scheduled course start date. Cancellation requests received before the 72 hour deadline will receive a cheque for the amount of the course minus a $25.00 administration fee. Cancellation requests received less than 72 hours prior to the scheduled course start date will be issued a credit voucher for the amount of the course minus a $25.00 administration fee. The credit voucher can be used towards future courses and workshops at Child Care Options within the year. Not feeling well? If you are registered for a workshop and you have flu-like symptoms such as a fever, cough, aches, and tiredness please do not attend the workshop and risk infecting other participants. If you cannot attend a workshop that you are registered for, we do not offer refunds but you can send a substitute in your place. Please call our office to inform of the substitution. No monies will be refunded or credits offered once the workshop or course starts. If enrolment for any workshop is insufficient, Child Care Options may cancel or reschedule the class. Paula moved to Surrey BC in 2011 to support the educators who work as preschool teachers with the City of Surrey. She along with her colleague implemented responsive curriculum. Paula was responsible for outdoor play spaces and curriculum planning that strengthens healthy child development. 17 years ago, she was a foster parent for 4 boys which inspired her to share the power of social emotional brain development with those working with young children. Paula has presented to numerous groups inclusive of CHOM, various CCRR groups, YMCA parent groups and various conferences. Appetite to Play Thursday, January 31 • 6:30 - 9:30 pm • 3 hours • Cost: $30.00 • Surrey The Appetite to Play interactive workshop for early childhood providers will enhance knowledge, skills and confidence in creating early years settings (child care centres, family based child care, preschool and parent participation programs) that support healthy eating, physical activity, food and physical literacy to promote healthy child development. Early childhood (0-5) is a critical time for setting the stage for lifelong healthy behaviours. During this workshop recommended practices, planning tools, tips and ideas, recipes, games and activities will be shared and practiced. Having teachers who were a part of the first Canadian Delegation to Reggio, she learned responsive curriculum inspired by Reggio Emilia and never looked back. She is currently the ECE Facilitator for the City of Surrey providing support for preschool instructors; creating training modules, and also designed and remodelled the City of Surrey's PRC preschool environments. Looking Through Different Lenses - Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Monday, February 11 • 6:30 - 8:30 pm • 2 hours • Cost: $30.00 • Surrey This presentation is designed for child care providers, early childhood educators and community service providers who provide support to children with FASD in a variety of child care programs and other community settings. It contains a general overview of the cause, primary and secondary characteristics, and possible advantage of early diagnosis and intervention. The workshop will provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of FASD and the key role of educators in addressing challenging behaviours associated with FASD in a positive and nurturing way. We will also discuss the importance of the social context of FASD, family dynamics, and our own attitudes and values in respect to supporting biological parents and individuals dealing with this condition. Malgosia is a Family Consultant who specializes in supporting children preschool to high school age and their “big people” in a variety of environments, including homes, school, and child care settings. Malgosia is experienced in addressing concerns associated with the daily challenges of caring for a child who requires support, including help- ing to make sense of difficult behaviour and supporting the big people for each child in finding a way through. Malgosia also works as a Key Worker with the Fraser Valley Child Development Centre. She provides support to caregivers raising children and youth who are living with FASD, from birth to 18 years of age. This will be an interactive discussion that includes opportunities for questions, situational examples, take home tools to use towards a future action plan in your center as well as moments of reflection to connect head and heart to the core of this matter. The question of WHY in early childhood practice is prevalent and crucial, and the why of the curriculum, as an integral part of that same practice, is a necessary one. They are born competent and complete and it is our duty to honour and respect their individual needs. Children’s time today is more structured than it has ever been at any point in modern history. It is an art that requires selfless intention and incredible heart. Big Science for Little Hands - Topics: Reflections and Shadows and Sticky Stuff Monday, March 18 • 6:30 - 8:30 pm • 2 hours • Cost: $30.00 • Surrey Big Science for Little Hands is a resource designed specifically for educators and caregivers of children aged 2 to 5 years. There are 18 themes of hands-on activities that promote scientific literacy, STEM and the inquiry-based approach to learning. This workshop provides an opportunity for you to try out a variety of hands-on science activities from two of our themes; Sticky Stuff and Reflections and Shadows. You will explore why glue is sticky, what happens when it dries? How Velcro is connected to nature, what we mean by wet and dry and investigate the properties of light and colour with mirrors, reflections and shadows! We will spend time teasing out the science concepts of each activity and discuss ways to encourage scientific literacy in young children. Participants will engage with the presenter as she shares her research and experiences with quality improvement and reflective practice. Participants and the presenter will work together to explore specific challenges for the group, and work toward realistic next steps in their own environments. Suitable for all early learning and child care professionals Presenter: Jacqueline Ewonus Jacqueline is currently the Program Director at SFU Childcare Society in Burnaby, BC, where she oversees 7 infant/ toddler programs. She has a longstanding relationship in the child care field in different capacities spanning over 29 years, including work as a licensing officer in Vancouver. She has been an instructor with the Burnaby School District for the past 11 years, teaching in the Early Care and Education Post Basic Program’s Inclusive Practice and Administration. Recently, Jacqueline has spoken at several conferences on pedagogical leadership, including the Early Care and Learning World Forum in New Zealand, and the 2018 National Leadership Conference at the McCormick Center for Early Childhood Leadership in Chicago, USA and in Beijing China August 2018, on Reggio inspired values and principles and curriculum. Exploring a Growth Mindset in the Early Years There will be a 1/2 Saturday, April 6 • 10:00 am - 2:30 pm • 4 hours • Cost: $40.00 • Surrey hour lunch break; The language we use with children reflects the values and beliefs we hold. When we use the intentional lunch. language of possibility and growth, children and staff have the ability to strengthen their mindset, confidence, and social-emotional development. In this interactive and playful session, Karen shares research and strategies to support staff in empowering young learners through shifting mindset and language. We will discuss and practice strategies, activities, and key phrases that strengthen a growth mindset. Participants will leave feeling empowered, excited, and with concrete ideas to act on right away in their practice. Suitable for all early learning and child care professionals Presenter: Karen Begley Karen is a teacher. She has taught children of all ages, adults, and families. She works with educators to simplify their practice by aligning it with their values and beliefs about children, childhood, and learning. She is passionate about the rights of children, the power of unstructured play, outdoor education, incorporating families into the community and learning process, and creating a respectful community and curriculum to empower young learners. She enjoys mentoring individuals and groups through explorations of inquiry-based learning, purposeful pedagogy and place-based learning. Training Reminders When you receive your confirmation please verify it with your records. Please note your workshop dates on your personal calendar as Child Care Options does not phone participants to remind of workshops. When a workshop has two available dates, please ensure you attend the date and location you have registered for. Training certificates will be issued on the evening of your workshop. To receive a training certificate for the full length of the workshop, you must arrive on time, participate, and stay for the entire session. Late arrivals to a workshop will be admitted at the discretion of the presenter, however, late arrivals will not be admitted into first aid courses. You must arrive on time as the class begins right away and there is a large amount of material to cover. Replacement certificates and/or receipts will be issued for up to one year of the date of the workshop at a cost of $10.00 per certificate/receipt. For replacement certificates for the GOOD BEGINNINGS and 20 Hour Responsible Adult courses please contact BCFCCA at office@bcfcca.ca The Early Years Centre is a ‘scent aware’ building so please keep the use of colognes, perfumes and other scented personal care products to a minimum. We are unable to accommodate children during a workshop or course. Attending a workshop over the lunch break? Participants are on their own for lunch. The CCRR has a fridge and microwave for your convenience. As well there is a Denny’s Restaurant in our parking lot. Keep in mind you have 30 minutes for lunch. Photographs may be taken during training, either by us or other participants. By registering, you will be giving permission that photos containing your image/likeness may be used. Laminating The laminator is available on the first and third Saturday of each month as well as the following Thursday evenings from 5:30-7:30 pm: January 17 February 21 March 21 Please call ahead so we can have the laminator turned on and ready for your use.
