Aug 7, 2021 WILDFIRE UPDATE FIRE: Flat Lake (C41602) FIRE STATUS: Out of Control SIZE: 60,739 ha (most of this growth is attributed to overnight activity two nights ago but an updated track was not obtained until yesterday afternoon) RESOURCES: There are currently 115 firefighters, 36 pieces of equipment, 10 structural protection personnel and there are 15 helicopters for the Northeast complex. Overnight shifts are implemented based on activity needs. UPDATES: The north west corner of the fire continues to be the most active section of the fire. Crews have been mopping in the area of the planned ignitions on the NE corner. Yesterday additional planned igni- tions were considered to remove pockets of unburnt fuel, however due to moisture and cooler temperatures crews used direct attack methods instead. That work will continue today, as crews continue mopping up to 100ft from the fire’s edge on the NE corner and working their way north. Yesterday afternoons successful planned ignitions further secured the west flank and built upon the containment achieved between McKinley and Alberta Lakes area, along the 3900 rd to the Meadow Lake -Dog Creek Rd junction and up the Dog Creek Road to approximately the 30km marker. Yesterday crews worked the area of the third planned ignition to clean up the lines and do mop up along the Valenzuela Creek to 22km Mark on the Dog Creek Rd section. In the evening winds and conditions on site were favourable so personnel proceeded with a small scale planned ignition to further tie the west flank in and secure the established containment line. Line locating was also completed to determine new lines and objectives for heavy equipment on the northwest corner. Today crews will be mopping up in the area of the planned ignitions operation yesterday and heavy equipment will begin building new containment lines on the northwest corner. Consideration and planning is ongoing for the option to utilize ad- ditional planned ignitions to continue achieving containment, building upon the success of the previous planned ig- nition operations. The “1100 road” Forest Service Road closure remains in effect. The map and road closure notice is posted on the Fires of Note page. Cooler temperatures are expected through the weekend with minimal precipitation ahead of returning hot and dry conditions early next week. Fire activity is expected to pick back up as fuels dry out with the anticipated warming and drying trend. Aug 7, 2021 WILDFIRE UPDATE FIRE: South of Canim Lake Wildfire (C41100) FIRE SIZE: 3,049 hectares (size update due to better track) FIRE STATUS: Being Held RESOURCES: There are currently 32 firefighters, 7 pieces of heavy equipment and there are 15 helicopters are available to continue to action the fires within the Northeast complex with bucketing activities. UPDATES: On Aug 5 plans were completed for a small-scale ignition operation and crews set up a sprinkler line and put hose lay in place for the future planned ignition. The planned ignitions will be conducted to bring the fire perimeter down to the establish guard on the southwest corner of the fire. This section of the fire is burning in steep, difficult terrain and bringing the fires edge down to the control lines will bring the fire down to safer more operable ground for the crews. Yesterday conditions on site were favourable in the afternoon so personnel proceeded with the planned igni- tions. Due to cooler temperatures aerial ignition did not take so crews utilized hand ignition to burn along the con- trol line at the base of the slope and remove unburnt fuels from the containment line upslope to the fire perimeter. Today crews will be patrolling and extinguishing hotspots as and demobbing gear from the east flank and furthering the securement of containment lines by continuing to mop up to 100 ft in off the fires edge to further secure the southeast corner. A Forest Service Road closure is in effect for the MacDonald-Takagi FSR. The purpose of this closure is for public safety during salvage operations and road repairs associated with the Canim Lake wildfire as it will be a high traffic road for heavy equipment. The map and road closure notice is posted on the Fires of Note page. Cooler temperatures are expected through the weekend with minimal precipitation ahead of returning hot and dry conditions early next week. Fire activity is expected to pick back up as fuels dry out with the anticipated warming and drying trend.
