Welcome Nuneaton Museum & Art Gallery has been bringing inspiration, fun, and learning to audiences since 1917. Set in the beautiful Riversley Park, the Museum hosts a varied programme of exhibitions, events, and activities for all ages. Opening Days & Times Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday & Saturday 10.30am - 4.30pm Thursday (downstairs and tearoom only) 10.30am - 4.30pm Bank Holiday Mondays 10.30am - 4.30pm FREE Admission but donations welcome. There is no need to book ahead of your visit, but details will be taken on entry for track and trace purposes. A queuing system will also be in place to manage capacity. What we are doing to keep everyone safe • Asking visitors to scan the track and trace app on arrival. • Monitoring capacity to ensure all visitors and staff have room to adhere to the 2-metre Rule. • Frequently cleaning surfaces throughout the day. • Offering hand sanitiser upon entry to the Museum. • Instigating a one-way route to guide visitors around the Museum. Exhibitions A Dextrous Eye: The works of Geoff Yeomans White Gallery 18 September – 7 November This retrospective exhibition features the work of Geoff Yeomans who taught at Image by JJS Wilde Nuneaton School of Art. This exhibition covers 60 years of creativity as both artist and teacher. His work demonstrates his eye for detail and his incredible craftsmanship. ‘Play and Display!’ Paper and Card Toys Yellow Gallery 23 October - 12 December Relive childhood memories with this charming exhibition of paper and card toys. Paper and card toys have been commercially produced from the late 1700s and all kinds of affordable, yet delightful toys have been produced since then. Come and explore this wonderful collection of paper and card toys. Nuneaton Museum & Art Gallery Upstaged A Solo Exhibition by Leah Stuart Landing Gallery 25 September – 21 November Intrigued by the fairy tales that inspired some of Shakespeare’s greatest works, creative textile artist Leah Stuart returns to the museum following her successful 2019 debut. This year audiences will revel in the delightful results of Leah Stuart a new ambitious project creating over a dozen 3D fabric characters. 4
Featuring Female Creativity: Art from our Collections White Gallery 13 November – 4 December This exhibition is the first from the Museum & Art Galleries own collections which features only work by women. The work spans, watercolour, oils and pastels and ceramics. The subject matter ranges from illustrations to industry from still life to portraiture. Art-Tastic: A group exhibition Yellow Gallery 18 December 2021 – 29 January 2022 Nuneaton District Society of Artists returns with a group exhibition to the Yellow Gallery. This Art Club Member colourful exhibition of watercolours, oils and acrylics has been created by local artists that meet regularly to develop their practice. All artworks will be available to buy. What’s On October 2021 - February 2022 Relations, Stories, Magic A Solo Exhibition by Robert Fitzmaurice Landing Gallery 27 November 2021 – 22 January 2022 In this solo exhibition of paintings and ceramics Robert Fitzmaurice will present a new body Robert Fitzmaurice of work inspired by objects selected from the museum’s collection. He was born in Nuneaton in 1960 and during his youth the family would visit the museum most weekends. Following on from his early encounters with art his interest in figurative conventions across cultures deepened through travels in India and the Far East. Employing grid-like relationships of colour and form the artworks look back, forward and sideways to reference childhood memories, local history, and stories from other lands. www.fitzmaurice.works 5
Nuneaton Abbey & The Birth of a Town White Gallery 24 December – 6 March 2022 Drawing on historical research and museum archaeological collections and specially commissioned artwork this exhibition explores the significance of one of the most important buildings to have existed in Nuneaton and examines the lives of the people who lived there. In January 2022 it will also feature the loan of The Nuneaton Book, a medieval manuscript from The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. The exhibition is part of a wider community project about Nuneaton Abbey which will be running until June 2022 in partnership with St Mary’s Abbey Church, Nuneaton. It is supported with funding from Arts Council National Lottery Project Grants. Abstract Cubism Solo Exhibition by Peter Scott Carre Nuneaton Museum & Art Gallery Landing Gallery 29 January – 27 March Inspired by the works of Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, Peter Scott Carre presents a collection of original multicoloured cubes and geometric shapes. Come and enjoy his playful compositions and colourful abstract cubism paintings. 6
Permanent Exhibitions The Picture Gallery – First Floor This room showcases a range of paintings and decorative items from the Museum’s collection. We like to encourage people to look closely at the art. What can a portrait tell us about the person’s background and mood? How have different artists depicted the changing nature of the sea? What different stories can artworks reveal? The Local History Gallery – Ground Floor The Borough of Nuneaton and Bedworth has been a place to live and work for over 1000 years. This gallery brings to life its rich history through objects and stories. Find out about the entertainer Larry Grayson, the Royal Gurkha Rifles What’s On October 2021 - February 2022 regiment, how Nuneaton got its name, and Nuneaton’s varied industries. The George Eliot Parlour and Writing Room – Ground Floor George Eliot (1819-80) was a famous Victorian novelist who grew up in Griff, Nuneaton. She wrote several books including Middlemarch and Adam Bede. Our galleries include a reconstruction of her parlour where she wrote and entertained, and objects associated with her life and novels. You can find out who George Eliot was, what influenced her writings and how her fame has spread across the world. 7

Prices start at just £12.95, with different sizes and framing available. These wonderful pictures would make a unique and original gift for a birthday, anniversary, or other special occasion. The Museum currently has over 60 prints to choose from in the Art UK shop. They include local Nuneaton scenes; restful mountain, coastal and river landscapes; military scenes and paintings of animals. Children’s Activities October Half Term To tie in with our amazing Play and Display exhibition we have some great Make & Take activities for children over Half Term. Tuesday 26 October Decorate and create a movable Melly Doll and find out about the story of Edward Melly, the man who built the Museum! Wednesday 27 October Create an amazing Cone Creature! We’ll show you how to make a shaped paper character of a dog, funny face or even an animal from the zoo! Thursday 28 October Make a Colourful Super Spinner! Amaze your friends by creating spinning and moving patterns! Christmas Holidays Activities Join us for some festive creative fun in the run up to Christmas! We’ll show you how to make some crafty decorations. What’s On October 2021 - February 2022 Tuesday 21 December and Wednesday 22 December No booking required, just drop in between 10.30am and 3.30pm. All activities are free, but donations are welcomed. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Due to social distancing at busy times, you may be asked to queue. Storytelling for Under 5s 11.15am - 11.45am Join us for a fabulous picture story for Under 5s. Be prepared to join in, make some noise and have fun! All children must be accompanied by an adult. Lunchtime Talks Join Matt Johnson, the Museum’s Learning & Engagement Manager as he delivers a series of talks based on the personalities and collections associated with the Museum & Art Gallery. Thursday 4 November Melly, The Man and the Museum Find out about the extraordinary life of Edward Ferdinand Melly, the man who built Nuneaton Museum & Art Gallery. Thursday 16 December Melly’s Diaries In a follow up to November’s talk, delve a little deeper into the life of Edward Melly with particular reference to his travel journals, held in the Museum’s collections. Thursday 13 January, 2pm - 3pm Relations, Stories, Magic The writer and curator Tess Charnley discuss the exhibition ‘Relations, Stories, Magic’ with artist Robert Fitzmaurice, plus insights into the Nuneaton Museum & Art Gallery collection from museum curator Liz Taylor. Thursday 20 January Mystery Objects A light-hearted and fun session in which a series of objects are presented to the audience whose purpose might not be obvious! A great way to show of your local history knowledge. Online Hands on History Discover the stories behind some fascinating collections at Nuneaton Museum and Art Gallery. Content is shared on our blog the third Saturday of every month. 20 November The Light Fantastic November’s Hands on History session explores objects from our collection that have a relationship to light. These range from a pouch used to carry flint and tinder to make fire, to a lacemaker’s light diffuser and an atmospheric painting of the twilight. 15 January Time Travel January’s Hands on History What’s On October 2021 - February 2022 session looks at how we capture moments in time, from photographs and diaries to films, paintings, calendars and letters. 18 December 19 February Toy Story Crime and Punishment What will be on your Christmas list Who loves a bit of the gruesome? this year? Talking Collections is back! Our Talking Collections object boxes give access to museum objects, allowing you to creatively share memories with people! The boxes are designed specifically for reminiscence work can be used anywhere where people get together such as day centres, residential homes, hospital wards and care homes. Each box focuses on different life experiences and contains objects, information, images, and suggestions for use. A £20 deposit for each box is required on collection for a two-week period. The boxes and contents are fully sanitised before collection so are safe to use.
