PRESS RELEASE Berlin, 16 April 2019 FOOD FOR THE EYES The Story of Food in Photography C/O Berlin will be presenting the exhibition Food for the Eyes . The Story of Food in Photography from 08 June to 07 September 2019. The opening will take place on Friday, 07 June 2019, at 7:00 p.m. at C/O Berlin in the Amerika Haus at Hardenbergstrasse 22–24, 10623 Berlin. Food for the Eyes at C/O Berlin presents the varied history of food in photography. The exhibition includes Swiss artist duo Fischli and Weiss’s legendary Sausage Series, showing hot dogs, German sausages, parsley, and pickles arranged as props in a grotesquely absurd scene; fashion photographer Irving Penn’s similarly iconic frozen fruit and vegetable sculptures and his numerous artful still lifes; and British Magnum photographer Martin Parr’s images of bright fairy cakes, tea, and beans on toast, all instantly recognizable as typically “British.” The show also presents works by Cindy Sherman and Martha Rosler that disrupt the traditionally domestic role of the woman in the kitchen. Like the air we breathe or the water we drink, food is necessary for our survival. It awakens our senses and is part of private and public life in equal measure. Food and shared meals also play an important role in our rituals, religions, and festivals. Our beliefs, desires, and fantasies are reflected in what we choose to eat. Because food is part of our everyday life, it was and is a frequently depicted subject. And, like food itself, food photography can raise fundamental questions about a wide variety of societal themes: family, tradition, home life, wealth, poverty, gender, race, dis- gust, satisfaction, and consumption. With works from fine art, fashion photography, journalistic stories, and advertise- ments, the exhibition offers a comprehensive overview of the depiction of food in photography through three themes. Still Life explores one of the most firmly estab- lished artistic traditions and asks the questions: How have photographers reinter- preted and subverted what was originally a genre of painting? What has changed— which new forms have developed over the course of time? Around the Table examines the ritual and sense of community that forms when food is shared, as well as the values and cultural identity they reflect. Playing with Food explores how the playful use of food can present new meanings and call us to both question and laugh at society’s traditions. Food for the Eyes . The Story of Food in Photography brings together a number of well-known artists, including Nobuyoshi Araki, Peter Fischli and David Weiss, Nan Goldin, Rinko Kawauchi, Laura Letinsky, Martin Parr, Irving Penn, Martha Rosler, Cindy Sherman, Stephen Shore, and Wolfgang Tillmans. Curated by Susan Bright and Denise Wolff the exhibition is organized by Aperture Foundation, New York, in collaboration with C/O Berlin. /O Berlin Foundation . Amerika Haus . WALL TEXTS Food for the Eyes The Story of Food in Photography 08/06/–07/09/2019 INTRODUCTION We are what we eat. Food both fuels and shapes our physical bodies from the in- side, and acts as an outward expression of our pleasures and our principles. Eating is one of the most mundane and carnal acts, yet it is also central to our rituals, religi- ons, and celebrations. Food touches both public and private life. It can signify a life- style or a nation, hope or despair, hunger or excess. Ultimately, food is not only about literal taste, but also Taste with a capital T—both the way of life we aspire to and the building blocks of culture itself. And so, similarly, photographs of food are rarely just about food. They hold our lives and time up to the light. As a subject that is commonly at hand, food has been and continues to be widely depicted. Today, photographing your food has never been more popular, and pictures of food—much like food itself—can raise deep-seated questions around ideas of family, tradition, class, gender, race, health, pleasure, and disgust. Featuring photographs from across artistic and commercial practices, Food for the Eyes covers this rich history through three dynamic themes, considering the genre of still life, the communities that form around food, and food’s irresistible call to play and humor. Photographs of food can express how we live and how we value oursel- ves, and, at their very best, connect us to our dreams and desires. STILL LIFE Early photographers borrowed heavily from the enduring tradition of still life in pain- ting. They included all the classical food and flowers, but broke new ground in the genre by using photography’s ability to describe in the minutest of detail. They con- centrated on the richness of objects, the things that make up our world—turning what was visible into artifacts, and transforming them to resonate beyond mere subject matter. Since then, photographers have updated and subverted how we understand still life, and photographs of food have come to be some of the most ex- citing in a genre that often lags behind other artistic movements. Today, fine-art photography has returned to the still life with new vigor, with artists borrowing from early commercial food photography as well. At the same time, contemporary cook- books and magazines have shifted to illustrating with artful arrangements that don’t necessarily aid the cook, but are thrilling still lifes in their own right. /O Berlin Foundation . WALL TEXTS Food for the Eyes The Story of Food in Photography 08/06/– 07/09/2019 AROUND THE TABLE Whether a daily meal or decadent feast, food brings people together and is part of our sense of community and belonging. The tabletop, food counter, or picnic blan- ket is as much a psychological space as a physical one, where human interactions play out, where manners and taste are learned and performed. When photogra- phed, these moments speak powerfully to identity—personal, familial, cultural, and political. They run deep, tapping into the notions of good living, health, abundance, and status so often deployed in advertising and propaganda. Such pictures can re- flect the social values of their time and place. Here, photography is an important marker of how food can represent who we are, and how we see ourselves and others. PLAYING WITH FOOD As much as food symbolizes the most refined aspects of a culture, it is also prone to riot, absurdity, and spoof. Food awakens all the senses; our experience relies not only on the taste, but also on the way food looks, feels, smells, even sounds. The sight of food alone can make us hungry or repulse us. The desire to sculpt, smash, throw, or smear food can be irresistible. From farcical food fights to haute cuisine, the range of playing with food is broad, at times funny and ironic, at others puzzling or sharp. Through their clever staging of food, the photographs here can stand in for physical desire, poke fun at tradition, or comment on issues such as body image or domesticity. Such play presents foodstuffs anew, shifting meanings and connota- tions to something altogether different and unexpected. /O Berlin Foundation . Amerika Haus .
