2 “Transition Year is a one year school based programme between Junior and Senior Cycle. It is designed to act as a bridge between the two by facilitating the smooth transition from the dependent learning of the Junior Cycle to the more independent self-directed learning required for the Senior Cycle” SLSS definition of Transition Year
3 Transition Year is a diverse, dynamic programme that uniquely meets students' needs and prepares them for progression through Senior Cycle and towards Third- level and the working world. Research has shown that students who complete Transition Year successfully are more mature, more confident and more likely to take on roles of responsibility moving forward.
4 Education for Maturity with emphasis on social awareness and social competence. Aims & Education through Experience of Objectives working life as a basis for personal development and maturity. of Transition Year Promotion of General, Technical and Academic Skills with emphasis on self-directed learning.
Programme Layers 5 English Irish Maths German or French Core Layer History & Geography Religion Health Education Career Guidance Computers – Basic Microsoft module (uncertified)
6 Students choose certain subjects from different option blocks. Examples: Architectural Design Pod (linked to DCG) Accounting & Finance (linked to Accounting) Business Enterprise (linked to Business) Physics Subject Chemistry Sampling Biology Technology Layer Wood Design (linked to construction studies) Cookery Art Political Assassinations (linked to Politics & Society) Music Technology (linked to Music) Half Year Modules Switch at Christmas
Students choose certain subjects from different option blocks. 7 Special Interests Examples: Certified IT Microsoft training – Additional option for students wishing to gain a certified Microsoft Suite qualification (€100 additional fee applies – usually runs on Tuesday/Thursday afternoon – year long programme) PE Leisure Pursuits - students experience various sports and other leisure activities available in the local community Special YSI (Young Social Innovators)– students use media and performance arts to raise awareness of contemporary issues Interest Coding – Basic coding concepts as well as more advanced HTML and CSS to create web pages Subjects Law - programme produced by the NCCA and the court service to introduce the nature and operation of our legal system Tourism - students cover Tourism awareness while looking at heritage and culture and possible careers in this sector Road Safety - including visit to Driving Academy (at extra cost)
Chinese Studies - Students engage in a programme of 8 learning about Chinese Language & Culture. Media Studies – students learn various aspects of videoing, using story-boards and produce a short film Global Development – explores the opportunities and challenges that being part of a global community creates First Aid – Basic first aid training Environmental Studies* -students explore environmental awareness practices and environmental activism Fashion Design – including involvement in the Junk Special Kouture project Interest 3D Printing* - students have an opportunity to work in groups to design objects and 3d Print your final solution Subjects Social Justice* - Students learn about social justice and how to engage in social action in a positive meaningful way Theatre & Stage – Students explore various stages of musical production and choreography as they plan, develop and perform their own musical show (audition involved – year long programme) Tourism - Certified by Fáilte Ireland this programme covers tourism awareness with students learning about Tourism at home and abroad
9 Overnight Trips: Carlingford Adventure Centre* (this is booked pending Health Directive guidelines) Work Experience (4 Weeks) Ready or Not Tot - is a crying baby simulator that teaches teen education and baby care SUAS mentoring – literacy programme linked with local national school Jigsaw – mental health awareness Learning Tenderfoot Theatre workshops in conjunction with the Civic Theatre Tallaght & SDCC Enhancing Develop Me – Team Building programme Activities Guest Speakers / Assemblies / Workshops 3rd Age Action Computer workshops with elderly in local library Gaisce (The President's Award – Bronze Award) Trips: e.g. Subject related Law/History/Geography/Theatre trips/ MFL French & German Workshops e.g. Forensics – Poetry Slam - Team Building - Self Help Africa Fundraising events – Lucan Lions, Irish Autism, Dyslexia Ireland A.I.B. Build A Bank TY programme Localise – Programme to promote community awareness and involvement

13 Work Experience Secure placement and get employer to fill in the documentation which accompanies this PowerPoint. Return to Ms Higgins in September. Marks will be lost if forms are not returned promptly. Aim to secure placements as early as possible.
14 Primary schools and playschools are now requesting garda vetting. Student must be 16 years old to be vetted. Documents required include: Parental consent form/Student information form/ID e.g. Passport/Birth Cert/proof of address forms returned to school and sent to Garda Vetting ETB Parents need to reply to email & when vetting is complete school will be notified & give student confirmation to give to employers Some schools do their own vetting but require similar documentation Click HERE for Garda Vetting form for DDLETB and required documentation HERE.
15 Special Permission: Students who seek specialised work experience outside the specified Work Experience dates must seek permission in writing from Ms Higgins in order for TY Work Experience insurance to cover students. Other Relevant Work Experience Examples: Intel Secondary Schools programme, Gardai, Irish Defence Forces, Jigsaw 'Walk in our Shoes' programme, University programmes (RCSI, UCD etc.), DSPCA, legal firms and other companies. Students must apply for these programmes themselves.
16 Community Voluntary Work Experience • Look locally at helping in your community e.g. Parkrun, GAA, Guides, Scouts, Charity shop etc. • This may also be used for the Gaisce Bronze Voluntary Award Community • Must be 90 mins a week (any day). • Complete a record card as evidence of Work placement, must be signed by supervisor & returned to Ms Twyford, Year Head, who coordinates this aspect of the programme. • More details about this will be given to the students when they return.
