West Cheshire Rural U3A Bulletin /08/2020 Welcome to bulletin number 21. Please email anniebayliss@hotmail.com with any news or information that you would like to share with members in the next one, or topics that you would like us to cover. Poetry Group Poetry Group met last Monday on zoom, here is a list of what was read. The Gates of Damascus– James Elroy Flecker The Secret – Ralph Spaulding Cushman Provision Simon Armitage Blackberrying - Sylvia Plath From a Full Heart – A A Milne Our next scheduled session is on the Bank Holiday, so we have decided to move it back to September 7th. Jill took a screen shot of us all online this week – she did admit it’s not her best, but here we are on a sunny Monday morning
West Cheshire Rural U3A Bulletin /08/2020 Walking Group We have 3 mini walking groups up and running now. We can set up more mini walking groups of up to 6, for those that are interested. Please contact Jill Hughes. She can share your contact details with others who are interested, so that you can get together and plan venues and dates to suit yourselves. The descriptions of the walks are included for other groups or individuals to follow. Please note the layby used as the starting point for the Saighton walk I provided details of a couple of week ago is not accessible at present. Walk around Tattenhall – Jill Hughes Carolyn led our walk, and we were joined as usual by Sheila, David, Marjorie and Viv on our walk of around 5 miles on a beautiful sunny day. I’ll describe the walk in the opposite direction to the one we took, as I think that the paths are easier to find that way. We met at the Park School in Tattenhall and walked away from the village on Chester road past Rookery Drive to the footpath on the right. Through the kissing gate, across about 8 fields going behind Brook Hall to Manor Farm following the signposts. Coming out onto Newton Lane turn left and cross the bridge over the old railway line just beyond which is a metal field gate that you can walk round. Go down a narrow, rather overgrown path to a huge field. Keeping the hedge on your right initially, walk straight on, crossing the field to the old bridge at the far end. Just before the bridge, go right following the edge of the field till you can access the track to your left. Turning right, that track takes you over the railway to Golden Nook. At the canal go right till you meet Tattenhall Road. Turn right again and walk back to the village on the newly (almost) constructed footpath. You could make the walk longer by taking the path behind The Ice-cream Farm back to the village. Lovely walk, thanks to Carolyn for leading for us. Walk around Peckforton – Jill Hughes This walk was in Peckforton, led by Marjorie, with Carolyn, Viv, Sheila, David and Jill. We met at the carpark next to the Cheshire Workshop and walked up Hill Lane via Rocky Lane off to the left. We continued along Hill Lane, under the haunted bridge, straight through to Stonehouse Lane where the first three pictures were taken.
West Cheshire Rural U3A Bulletin /08/2020 Turning right at the Lane, we continued quite a long way down till we met Mill lane on the left. Opposite, we took a path through the woods to Peckforton Gap where we joined Fowler’s Bench Lane, turned right and returned along the lane to our starting point. Another lovely sunny morning, thanks to Marjorie for leading the walk. Walk around Farndon – Pauline Bell Pauline sent me these pictures from their walk around Farndon. Pauline has recently joined a mini walking group. She said they had a great time and ended the walk at Lewis’s coffee shop in Farndon for refreshments ......great coffee there! Its good to see these places opening up and welcoming us back for a well deserved refreshments at the end of a walk.
West Cheshire Rural U3A Bulletin /08/2020 Due to various holidays/commitments this groups next walk is brought forward to Thursday 27th August which Lynda will lead and then they will revert to fortnightly walks from there. Sue Mort and three others did the walk from Aldi through Caldy Valley this week. This is a walk done previously by Jill, Hughes group but with the help of the route and a map from Jill has now been done on three separate occasions. This group plan to walk from the Candle Factory this Thursday. Ukulele Group We have revised our Ukulele frequency back to our baseline of every two weeks. The next Ukulele session will be on the 2nd September. The contribution this week is from Donna Eaton our only left-handed ukulele player. A view from the Ukulele group – Donna Eaton’s contribution Our latest Zoom ukulele session was on Wednesday, 19th August. We had hoped to meet outdoors in small groups linked to Zoom but unfortunately the weather forecast was against us. We enjoyed a jolly hour, playing everything through twice, it is always easier and sounds better second time around.
West Cheshire Rural U3A Bulletin /08/2020 I am the only leftie in the group. I started looking for a left-handed Ukulele when Ken suggested starting the group. Such an instrument does not exist, however, thanks to the help from Intuneative in Chester I chose an ukulele and they restrung it for me – the opposite to everyone else!! My music sheets are also different to the rest, I play the same chords but in the opposite direction. Wherever I see ukuleles being played I always check to see how many players are left-handed, not very many to date. However, seeing the left-handed players in action gave me the inspiration to persevere. World Ukulele Day in Liverpool in February is always a good place to visit. Various bands play throughout Liverpool One with an enormous finale outside John Lewis. Another favourite of mine is The Great Ukulele Summer Strum which has been held in Hoylake in July, a real carnival atmosphere but sadly not this year. Well, enough from me, we would love for you to join us, left or right-handed. Our next session will be Wednesday, 2nd September. We look forward to the day we are able to welcome back those who we have not seen due to Covid restrictions, we have not forgotten you. Historical Association Online Lectures.
