DEDICATION, PRIDE AND COMPANIONSHIP WELCOME TO THE DARRA-OXLEY PONY CLUB The new year has gotten well and truly underway here at DOPC, with three clinics already under our belt! From our first muster (pictured below) to the latest show jumping clinic, the first three months of the year have been packed full of exciting events. Thanks to the grant we received, there are plenty more clinics to go so make sure you check out the calendar for dates for our upcoming events! Clinics are open to all DOPC members for no cost, and open spots can be filled with outside PCAQ members and non-members for a fee. There are only a limited number of spots available, with DOPC members having priority, so requester your interest on the website for any clinics you are interested in! The first muster of the year landed on a particularly hot day, and as such all riding was completed by 9am. Thanks to Michelle Nordling for bearing the heat to instruct us for the hour and thanks to the members who turned up despite the heat! After the ride, the yearly AGM was held, where committee positions were filled with new members. Please welcome Claire Duffin as the DOPC President for the year! Presidents Report Hello and welcome to another year at DOPC. I'd just like to say a big welcome to all our new members and returning members this year. Most people have taken up committee and general helper positions which is great so a big thankyou for that. We are only 2 months into the year and have already had 3 great clinics (personally I can't wait for the campdrafting) We were very fortunate to receive a grant to be able to run these clinics free of charge to members. A lot of time and work goes into applying for these grants with no guarantee of success so a thankyou to Frances who spends weeks on end doing up these applications for the benefit of all our members. I hope everyone enjoys the next clinic on the 9th April. We will be doing sporting practice at the muster on the 23rd in preparation for our up coming gymkhana. See you all then. The Club Committee This year is shaping up to be a big year, with many new faces joining the committee ranks. Get to know your club members by attending musters and club meetings, and know who to talk to for any concerns or feedback. Our new Uniform Coordinator, Julie, has already been doing a fantastic job. Our gymkhana is coming up on 7 May, if you are riding, you will need a formal club uniform, which consists of: white tie, long sleeve green shirt, optional brown sleeveless woolen vest, green saddle blanket with club name embroidered on. We are ordering more green shirts and saddle blankets, if you need one please email our uniform coordinator, Julie, by Friday 7 April: Uniforms@juliedunsmore.com. The other items, such as muster shirts, are in stock and can be purchased at our next event, which is the Positive Horsemanship clinic on Sunday 9 April. Uniform costs are on the website, under Membership: www.darraoxleyponyclub.org.au/ Fundraising In charge of Fundraising is Julie and Grace, so if you have any suggestions or are able to help out at the upcoming Bunnings sausage sizzle on the 13th of May, get in contact with them by email at grace.hornstra@hotmail.com or in person at musters of club meetings. We are planning a few events in the next few months, including another Cadbury chocolate boxes sale, a car boot sale, and an event to celebrate the club’s 60th year of riding. If you are keen, we will be looking for helpers in the next month in preparation for these events. The first clinic of the year: Stephanie Forster’s Dressage Clinic - February 26th It was a fantastic day, with positive reviews from riders of all skill levels. Groups with beginners, intermediates and advanced worked on elements of dressage that reflected their skill levels. Steph was able to adapt her instructing to suit even the most basic of beginners, who worked on cornering, circles and straight lines. It was great to see all the riders attend with open minds and put their all into the sessions, and everyone got great results. Karen provided a wonderful lunch of lasagna for the clinic participants. Many thanks to Stephanie and riders! B DARRA OXLEY PONY CLUB INC. 588 Boundary Road, Richlands, QLD 4077 PO Box 3236, Darra, QLD 4076
Our two Show jumping Clinics: John Broadbent and Guy Creighton! The second clinic of the year was John Broadbent’s showjumping clinic on the 12th of March. The day started off with some ground work and trot poles, with John encouraging riders to watch where their eyes were focusing. Not long into the morning the first pole went up, with John giving constant feedback. Legs in the forward position and eyes on the next target were big points. As the poles went up, riders each had individual rounds, allowing John to give one on one feedback on each rider’s performance. Good work Kerian and Clare for taking their horses over their first jumps! Thanks John! Thanks also go out to Michelle Nordling for instructing some riders who were not jumping, and congratulations go to Rose for gaining confidence and working on her canter! Go Rose! Guy Creighton’s show jumping clinic came one week later; on the 19th of March. Due to the rain, the course was set out on the fast draining ground in front of the hall. Riders were in beginner, intermediate and advanced groups, with all groups starting out with ground work over ground poles. After a warm up and check of posture, Guy sent riders over a grid of slowly increasing height based on each groups confidence and skill level. After another great lunch provided by Karen, Guy set up a simple jump course to increase the challenge. Riders were encouraged to take wide turns and stay collected to keep safe in the damp, and as such there was not a single slip or fall. All riders showed great improvements, with special congrats to Clare who progressed hugely over the day! Many thanks to Guy and helpers who braved the drizzle, and riders who put their all into their sessions. DARRA OXLEY PONY CLUB INC. 588 Boundary Road, Richlands, QLD 4077 PO Box 3236, Darra, QLD 4076
