SAFETY POLICY IN CASE OF A FIRE UPON CHECK-IN: • Review the map behind your door. Take note of the exits nearest to your location. • Review your room layout and be sure you are accustomed to opening your door in the dark. • Have your room key readily accessible in case of emergency-- you will need to get back into your room if there is no safe exit. IF YOUR ROOM DOOR IS NOT HOT AND THERE IS NO SMOKE IN THE HALLWAY: • Check the hallway, ensuring it is clearr of smoke. If the hallway is clear, take your room key, exit your room, and securely close your door behind you. Head to the nearest lit exit, leaving the Lodge and heading to the Main Parking Lot. Avoid using the elevators. • If at all possible, alert the operator to the fire and its location by dialing “0”. But, always make your own safety a priority. IF YOUR ROOM DOOR IS HOT AND/OR THERE IS SMOKE IN THE HALLWAY: • Remain calm and stay in your room, keeping the door shut. • Turn off the air conditioner. • Fill the bathtub with water so you have a water supply. • Place wet towels along the bottom of the door and over any vents. • Dial “0” to let the operator know your locationn and stay below any smoke in the room. • If you are staying on the first floor, escape through the window if possible. • If you are staying on the second or third floor, lean out the window with a towel to alert rescuers to your location
SAFETY POLICY IN CASE OF A TORNADO AFTER THE SIRENS SOUNDS: • Immediately proceed to the first floor, bringing your room key with you after shutting the door • Stay clear of all windows and the pool area. • Kneel on the floor with your hands covering your head, facing a wall. • If you are located in the Dining Room, Back Door Lounge, Gift Shop, Or Great Hall, you will be directed to a basement location through the kitchen. • If you are staying in a cabin, immediately come to the first floor of the Lodge. • If you are outside and cannot find shelter, crouch on the ground with your arms covering your head. GUIDELINES TO FOLLOW IN THE PARK: • For your safety, never hike alone. • If possible, carry a cell phone with you at all times. • Follow all warning and caution signs and remain on marked trails. • Alcohol is prohibited in the Park from January 1st - May 31st, and always prohhibited on trails. • Absolutely NO swimming or wading is allowed in the river or the State Park due to the intense undertow. • Please hold children’s hands when walking near the water or above canyons. • Remember that by following the WHITE DOTS throughout the Park, you will be heading towards the Lodge or Visitor’s Center. • In the event of an accident, dial 911 or call the Park Office at: (815) 667-4726.
LODGE RULES NO SMOKING POLICY In accordance with the Illinois Smoke-Free Act, smoking is is prohibited in all sleeping rooms and indoor public areas. Smoking is allowed outside; you must be at least 15 feet away from any entrance. Please use the provided receptacles for disposal of smoking materials. DO NOT throw butts on the ground, remember you are in the woods. Violations of this policy in the sleeping rooms will result in a $250.00 fee added to your final bill. PET POLICY Pets are prohibited in all sleeping rooms, meeting rooms, and indoor public areas. Dogs (weighing 50 lbs or less, or a combined weight of 50 lbs) are allowed in our pet-friendly Pioneer Cabins with a required pre-registration and service fees apply. Please check with the Front Desk for more information on these cabins. Up-to-date immunization records must be presented to our Front Desk prior to check-in. Certified service animals are permitted. We do ask that overnight guests inform the Front Desk if a service animal is staying in the room. Pets are allowed on hiking trails and the Veranda, but must be kept on a leash less than 10’ in length. Owners are expected to clean up after their pets. Cats and other domestic animals are not allowed. Violations of this policy in the sleeping rooms will result in a $250.00 fee addded to your final bill. QUIET HOURS Guests must respect quiet hours from 11 pm to 9 am. Please, no loud voices or running in the hallways, and keep TVs at a lower volume during these hours. If you become aware of a disruptive guest, please contact the Front Desk immediately by phone or in person. Management reserves the right to remove any guest who is causing damage to the hotel or being disruptive to the hotel environment. No refund for the length of stay will be given under these circumstances.

ACTIVITIES AT STARVED ROCK LODGE Extension 386 Starved Rock Lodge offers a variety of activities, from guided hikes, to musical tribute shows, and trolley tours. Please stop in our Activities Department (located to the West of the Great Hall restrooms), call Extension 386, or visit www.StarvedRockLodge.com for more information. ATM ATMs are located inside the Great Hall and outside Trailheads at the Visitor’s Center, near the riverfront. BACK DOOR LOUNGE Extension 322 The Back Door Lounge is located at the Eastern end of the Lodge, next to the Main Dining Room and connects with the Veranda. Try a glass of Starved Rock Signature Ale or one of our Starved Rock wines. Music takes place in the Back Door Lounge during the winter months on Fridays from 8-11 pm. Outdoor dining and weekend entertainment take place on the Veranda during the summer months. BOARD GAMES & PUZZLES Dial 0 Board games and puzzles are available at the Front Desk. There is no charge to check out a game or puzzle. Limit one game per guest room at one time. You may exchange your selection at any time. BUSINESS SERVICES Dial 0 Copies are made at the Front Desk for a charge of 10 cents per page. Guests are welcome to use the computer located on the 2nd floor, to the left of the main staircase. CAFE Extension 358 The Cafe, located in the lobby near the Front Desk, offers a variety of coffee, tea, breakfast foods, snacks, lunch selections, travel items, greeting cards, wine, and gifts.
Cafe Hours: (Change seasonally) Monday-Thursday: 6:30 am - 5 pm Friday & Sunday: 6:30 am - 6 pm Saturday: 6:30 am - 8 pm CAMPGROUND The Starved Rock Campground is located approximately 1.5 miles Southeast of the Lodge. The Lodge is not affiliated with the campground. Starved Rock Lodge does operate a camp store 24/7 for essentials, firewood, and vending. CHECK-IN & OUT Check-in time is: 4:00 pm Check-out time is: 11:00 am CRIBS “Pack & Play” cribs are available for $5.00 plus tax per night. DINING (For Main Dining Room reservations & carry-out orders, please call Extension 321) The Main Dining Room is located at the Eastern end of the Lodge off the Great Hall. Hours and menus vary by season. The Main Dining Room is open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Reservations are recommended for Sunday brunch. Carry-outs are available during regular business hours. Reservations are required for Holiday Buffets. The Starved Rock Cafe is located in the lobby near the Front Desk. It offers a variety of coffee, tea, breakfast foods, snacks, lunch selections, travel items, greeting cards, wine, and gifts. The Back Door Lounge is located at the Eastern end of the Lodge, next to the Main Dining room. Try a glass of Starved Rock Signature Ale or one of our Starved Rock Wines. Veranda Dining is available just outside The Back Door Lounge during the summer months. A grill menu is available daily. DVDs DVDs are available for rent for $1 at the Front Desk. EXPRESS CHECK-OUT Express Check-Out is offered to our guests who wish to check-out using their credit card on file. To take advantage of our Express Check-Out, simply leave the key cards in your room, and contact the Front Desk at “0” to finalize Express Check-Out. FIREWOOD Additional bundles of firewood are available for $8.00 plus tax by dialing the Front Desk at “0”. GIFT CARDS Gift card are available for purchase online at www.shopstarvedrock.com or at our Front Desk. Gift cards are used towards an overnight stay, activities, massages, food and shopping. GIFT SHOP Extension 320 The Gift Shop, located off the Great Hall next to the Main Dining Room, features T-shirts, ball caps, mugs, Starved Rock souvenirs, gifts, and much more. ICE MACHINES Ice machines are on the 1st and 2nd floors of the Lodge, near the staircases. Bags of ice are available for purchase at Trailheads Concessions (Riverfront). INTERNET The Lodge offers free wireless internet in all the rooms, public areas, and cabins for overnight and corporate guests. Please see the Front Desk for the current password. LOST & FOUND Please contact the Front Desk at “0” for lost and found information. LUGGAGE CARTS Luggage carts are located in the hallway of the lobby near the restrooms. MAIL Outgoing mail is available for drop-off at the Front Desk. Mail is picked up daily at 2 pm.
MAPS Free Starved Rock Trail Maps are available at the Front Desk, Great Hall, Activities Department, and Visitor’s Center. You may ask the Front Desk for a map of the Lodge and the grounds at any time. MEETING & CONFERENCE ROOMS Extension 333 Meeting and conference rooms are available at the Lodge. Let our professional sales staff help you plan your next meeting or corporate retreat. Please stop by our Sales Office, located on the first floor across from room 113. POSTAGE STAMPS Both general and postcard stamps are available for purchase at the Front Desk. RESTAURANT Extension 321 The Main Dining Room is located at the Eastern end of the Lodge. Hours and menus vary by sea- son. The Main Dining Room is open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Carry-outs are available during regular business hours. Reservations are recommended. Reservations are required for Holiday Buffets which are offered on Easter, Mother’s Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. ROLLAWAY BEDS Rollaway beds are available for $10.00 plus tax per night. Rollaways only fit in certain rooms, so please contact the Front Desk about availability. SOCIAL EVENTS AND WEDDINGS Extension 333 We would be honored to help you plan an outdoor wedding overlooking historic Starved Rock, or an indoor dream wedding in the Great Hall! We’re also a great place for your rehearsal dinner, bridal shower, or family reunion. Our sales tesm specializes in successful special event planning. Stop by and visit one of our sales managers on the first floor across from room 113. SOCIAL MEDIA We keep guests up-to-date on current events and what is happening around the Starved Rock area. SHOPPING Stop by the Starved Rock Cafe for travel necessities, greeting cards, wine and more. Purchase your Starved Rock souvenirs, jewelry, books, and various gifts in our Gift Shop or down at Trailheads (located in the Visitor’s Center). The Peru Mall is located approx. 8 miles West (Exit 75 off Route 80). SWIMMING POOL The Lodge offers its guests a swimming pool, hot tub, two saunas, and a gated children’s pool. The pool complex is located at the Western end of the Lodge. Children under the age of 18 must be supervised by an adult. Children under 16 are prohibited from using the hot tub and saunas. Locker rooms and pool towels are available in the pool area. The pool is open sunday through Thursday from 9 am to 10 pm; and until 11 pm on Friday and saturday. There is no lifeguard on duty. TELEVISION STATIONS See the TV Channel Guide and DVD instructions at the beginning of this Guest Book. THEATRES Movie theatres are located in the Peru Mall and downtown Ottawa. Fordirections, please dial “0”. TRAILHEADS CONCESSIONS & SOUVENIRS Trailheadsd Concessions is located at the bottom of the hill, inside the Starved Rock State Park Visitor’s Center. It offers a variety of food, gifts, souvenirs, books, and postcards. TRAILS Hiking trails at Starved Rock State Park are open from sunrise to sunset. Trail maps are found in the Great Hall, Activities Office, Visitor’s Center, and at the front Desk of the Lodge. Trails are free to the public. For questions regarding trails, please stop by the Front Desk, Activities Office or Visitor’s Center. VENDING MACHINES Vending machines are located on the 1st and 2nd floors of the Lodge, in the Great Hall, outside the Massage Cabin (just off the East parking lot) and in the Visitor’s Center. Vending machines are also located on the Eastern Side of the Veranda.
VISITOR’S CENTER The Visitor’s center is located on the lower level of the Park near the Illinois River. The Visitor’s Center is open daily from 9 am to 4 pm (winter hours are limited). FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS STARVED ROCK STATE PARK & LODGE ARE YOU OPEN YEAR-ROUND? Yes, the Lodge and Park are open 365 days a year. DOES THE PARK CLOSE IF IT IS FLOODED? Even if the river level parking lots flood, the park does not close. Trail closures can occur with flooding. Trail closures are posted on the Starved Rock Lodge and State Park websites and Facebook pages. WHERE CAN I PARK? Parking lots are available for day trippers by the Starved Rock Visitor’s Center and Overflow Parking lot, off the Route 71 entrance into the park. For overnight guests, we have a gated parking lot on the Western end of the Lodge. The Front Desk will give you a gate code upon check-in. For dining, activities, and shopping customers the main parking lot on the Eastern end of the building is available. We occasionall close our parking lot to the public and only allow hotel guests and customers to park here (holiday weekends). CAN WE ACCESS THE TRAILS FROM THE LODGE? Yes, there are three access points from the Lodge that take you to the trails. The first access is the staircase on the Eastern end of the Veranda, the second being East of the cabins (near the eagle woodcarvings) and the third is West of the cabins (hiking across the bridge by the West shelter). WHERE ARE THE WATERFALLS Seasonal waterfalls are in several of the 18 canyons in the spring or after heavy rain. The most scenic waterfalls at Starved Rock are in St. Louis, French, Wildcat, LaSalle, Hennepin, Ottawa, Kaskaskia, and Illinois canyons. At Matthiessen State Park. they are found at Matthiessen Lake Falls and Cascade Falls.
WHERE CAN WE SEE BALD EAGLES? Eagles can usually be seen from December through February fishing below the Starved Rock Lock and Dam and roosting on Leopold and Plum Islands. The higheset concentration of eagles is during the coldest time of year, usually January. When the river freezes, eagles have to find open water to search for fish, which they find in the turbulent water below the dam. The best place to view the bald eagles is from the top of Starved Rock. Binoculars are loaned out at the Starved Rock Visitor’s Center by leaving your driver’s license. The Visitor’s Center is open 9 am to 4 pm daily and closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. WHERE ARE THE ICE FALLS? Ice falls are in 14 of the 18 canyons, weather permitting, during fall and winter. The most scenic ice falls at Starved Rock are in St. Louis, French, Wildcat, LaSalle, Hennepin, Ottawa, and Kaskaskia Canyons. At Matthiessen State Park, they are found at Matthiessen Lake Falls and Cascade Falls. WHEN DO THE COLORS ON THE TREES CHANGE FOR FALL? Mother Nature is the only one that can tell us when the trees will start to change. Generally, the trees start to change by October 1st and peak around the middle of October; however, this can change from year-to-year depending upon the weather. IS THERE ICE CLIMBING IN THE PARK? Ice climbing is allowed during winter if the conditions allow. In order tto ice climb, climbers must climb with others (2 or more), provide their own equipment, and sign in using the log-in book at the front doors of the Park’s Maintenance building accros from the Visitor’s Center. It is up to the ice climbers to check the ice falls themselves to see if they are suitable for climbing. The Park/DNR does not check the status of the ice falls. The following canyons are the only canyons where ice climbing is allowed: LaSalle, Ottawa, and Wildcat.
CAN WE CROSS-COUNTRY SKI IN THE PARK? No, cross-country skiing at Starved Rock State Park is prohibited. However, it is permitted at Matthiessen State Park. When snow permits, six miles of rolling, un-groomed trails are available at Matthiessen State Park (one mile South of Starved Rock). Ski trails are openn daily. Ski rentals are available at Matthiessen on weekends from December through March. ARE THERE SNOWMOBILE TRAILS IN THE PARK? No, snowmmobiling is not allowed at Starved Rock State Park. However, snow- mobiling is allowed on the Illinois and Michigan Canal, one mile North of Starved Rock, when snow conditions permit. The DNR link to I&M Canal is: dnr.state.il.us. ARE PETS ALLOWED IN THE PARK? Yes, they are allowed in the Park, on the trails and in the campground. They must be kept on a leash and you must pick up after them. Pet litter bags are available at the Visitor Center. Pets are prohibited in buildings, with the exception of our pet-friendly cabins. CAN WE ROCK CLIMB IN THE PARK? No, due to the fragile nature of the sandstone rock, rock climbinng and rappelling are strictly prohibited. ARE THERE ADA ACCESSIBLE TRAILS IN THE PARK? No. The trails at Starved Rock and Matthiessen are in and out of canyons with many stairways; therefore, they are not accessible. However, there is a one-mile sidewalk surrounding Starved Rock Lodge with an observation deck behind the Lodge. There is a sidewalk along the river by the main parking lot which gives a good view of Starved Rock from its base. There is also a wheelchair friendly concrete trail near the Matthiessen Lake Falls parking lot that guests may visit as well.
ARE THERE BICYCLE TRAILS IN THE PARK? No. Bicycling is not allowed on the trails. It would be too dangerous and disruptive to the trails and others. The closest place to bicycle is on the Illinois & Michigan Canal, one mile North of the Park in Utica. This is a 62 mile trail. CAN WE GRILL OUTSIDE OUR CABIN? No, grilling is not allowed on the Lodge grounds. If you want to bring a grill, you may grill in the picnic areas in the lower park near the Visitor’s Center. ARE ANY OF THE ROOMS SMOKING ROOMS? No, Starved Rock Lodge is a smoke-free facility. Per Illinois State Law, you msy smoke outside as long as you are 15 feet from any entrance. DO YOU OFFER WIRELESS INTERNET? Yes, the Lodge has free wireless internet in all the rooms, public areas, and cab- ins for overnight and corporate guests. Please see the Front Desk for the current password. HOW OLD DO YOU HAVE TO BE TO RENT A ROOM OR CABIN? You must be 21 and present to rent a room or a cabin at Starved Rock Lodge. ARE THERE ADJOINING ROOMS? Yes, some of the rooms in the Lodge and Sunset Cabins have adjoining rooms. However, availability is not always guaranteed. Please see or call the Front Desk for availability. DO YOU HAVE ADA/HANDICAPPED ROOMS? Yes, we do have rooms that are wheelchair accessible. If you are in need of one of these rooms, please notify us so that we may accomodate you.
WHAT ARE CHECK-IN AND CHECK-OUT TIMES? CAN I CHECK-IN EARLY? Check-in is guaranteed at 4 pm on the day of your arrival. Early check-ins are usually not available. Check-out is at 11 am on the day of your departure. WHEN ARE YOUR OVERNIGHT PACKAGES AVAILABLE? Overnight packages are generally available Sunday through Thursday nights throughout the year. Please make sure you check the specific information for the package you are interested in for date restrictions. DO WE NEED RESERVATIONS FOR DINNER? Reservations are highly recommeded for all meals in the Main Dining Room. Reservations are required for Holiday Buffets. Simply dial extension 321 to make your reservation. DO THE CABINS HAVE KITCHENS? No, the cabins at Starved Rock Lodge are basic hotel rooms in a cabin setting. WHAT ARE THE POOL HOURS? The pool is open from 9 am to 10 pm Sunday through Thursday and 9 am to 11 pm on Friday and Saturday. CAN I PAY TO USE THE POOL FOR THEY DAY? No, our insurance does not allow anyone to use the pool unless they are a room or cabin guest of Starved Rock Lodge.
PARK RULES Starved Rock State Park, Starved Rock Visitor’s Center, and Starved Rock Visitor’s Center parking lots are free and open to the public. Hiking trails are open all year from sunrise to sunset. The Starved Rock Visitor’s Center parking lot is open from 6:30 am to 9 pm. Hikers are urged to show extreme caution in all areas of the park. Stay on marked trails. To protect the park and its visitors: DO NOT hike after dark. DO NOT rappel or rock climb. DO NOT hike off marked trails. DO NOT swim or wade in rivers or canyons. DO NOT pick or remove anything (including wildflowers). DO NOT allow pets off leash (leash must be 10 ft or shorter). No alcohol in the park January 1 through May 31. No alcohol is allowed on park trails or in campground. NO bicycles are allowed on hiking trails. Camping is allowed ONLY at the campground.
