BAYFIELD AREA TRAILS COMMITTEE Initiated in 2019 • VISION: A well-managed multiple-use trails network interconnecting the City of Bayfield, the community of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, and the Town of Bayfield. • MISSION: To create and sustain a multiple- use trails network in and around the City of Bayfield with active public involvement See details and goals in the and support. The Bayfield Area Trails Stewards (BATS) Volunteers are the Heart and Soul of Bayfield Area Trails • A corps of motivated and capable volunteers for trails and public information. • People of all skills and strengths are welcome. • The level of effort is the volunteer’s choice: wide range of options • Online sign-up via website • Establishes volunteer database for Bayfield Area Trails partners • Facilitates project coordination • Builds community of support • Shares ideas and information • BYOT: Bring your own tools
Stewardship Activities Volunteers are the Heart and Soul of Bayfield Area Trails bayfieldareatrails.com – sign up • Adopt a Trail: Maintain signs, clear vegetation with hand tools, and repair small issues along the trail. Report larger issues to the lead designee. • Maintenance Projects: Clear vegetation and fallen trees, repair trails and boardwalks, fix creek crossings, maintain signs, etc. • Construct new trails: Work under the leadership of a crew leader to clear vegetation; construct new trail; install steps, boardwalk and erosion control; install signs; and other duties as needed. • Public information: Assist with developing and distributing information about trails and the BAT Committee’s vision for the Bayfield Area Trails. • Website, social media, graphics, signage etc.
TOP TIPS for FIELD SAFETY Start All Sessions with Safety Briefing 1. Come prepared: • Dress for the weather conditions. • Proper personal protection (e.g. boots, gloves, hat, bugs, etc.) • Bring ample water and food. • Pack it in, pack it out. 2. Put first aid first: • Volunteers encouraged to maintain Red Cross First Aid and CPR certification, which can be obtained online: www.redcross.org 3. Know your limits: • Don’t be afraid to say no. Rest when you need to. • Maintain proper body mechanics • Know and address the signs of heat exhaustion/stroke, and hypothermia.
TOP TIPS for FIELD SAFETY Start All Sessions with Safety Briefing 4. Practice proper tool safety: • Keep adequate spacing while walking; carry tools with sharp points down. • Maintain safe working distance between workers using tools. • Keep tools from underfoot, sharp edges/points facing down. 5. Maintain situational awareness: • Watch out for tripping hazards, slippery footing, low hanging branches, etc. • Keep an eye on each other. 6. Stay in touch: • Cell phones and/or radio/walkie should be available. • Let the crew leader or someone else know if you have to leave.
COVID-19 SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS* Purpose: to protect oneself and other crew members 1. Maintain 6 ft. social distance 2. Face masks if 6 ft. may be breached 3. Bring your own hand sanitizer 4. Limit crews to < 5; plus leader * Some participants may not yet be fully vaccinated. But, if all crew members are fully vaccinated, they may collectively choose to not wear masks
VOLUNTEER RELEASE FORM Informed Consent • Understand that any activity has inherent risks. • Could result in harm or loss to the volunteer. • Accept all such risks of injury, damage or loss connected with volunteering. • Take responsibility for conducting oneself within physical and mental abilities; • Refrain from tasks that may exceed one’s abilities. • Agree to indemnify and hold harmless the Bayfield Area Trails Committee organizations.
