GOVERNOR'S REPORT AUGUST 2018
"CLUBS SHOULD CREATE AN ENVIRONMENT WHERE
MEMBERS CAN THRIVE." - Susanne von Bassewitz,
Ph.D., President, Zonta International and Zonta
International Foundation
When the district Governors-elect from around the globe
gathered for
orientation last February, this was
one of the first statements from our
incoming president. She made it
clear that it is okay to create the
club you want and need where
members feel empowered.
As we bridge Zonta's first century to
her second, consider this: EMPOWER
new members and embrace their ideas. EMPOWER new
ways of leading. EMPOWER one another to ask "WHY?"
when new ideas are presented, or when hanging on to
long-time traditions and practices.
In order to carry out ZI's goal to strengthen our resources
to support our mission, we have been directed as clubs to
enhance fellowship and mutual support and seek out new
members who are motivated to join a global movement
for women's rights.Check these great tips on CREATING A HAPPY CLUB LIFE
by clicking here.
And remember: If you must speak ill of another, do
not speak it, write it in the sand near the water's
edge. - Napoleon Hill
Zonta International Foundation Report
Bonnie McArthur - Foundation Ambassador
We are off to a GREAT start this
biennium - as of June 30, five clubs
have already made contributions tothe Foundation! We are 13.5% to our
goal of 100% club contributions as
compared to only 2.6% last year at
this time. Thank you, thank you, thank
you. Let's plan to be a 100% club
donor district before the year is out.
One of the brand new ZIF funded
projects coming out of the
Convention is the International
Women in Technology Scholarship.
This pilot program aims to maximize
Zonta's impact through educational programs that empower women
and girls. It encourages women to pursue a leadership role in a
field that will impact the next generation of women.
PROBLEM: Only 17 percent of Fortune 500 Chief Information
Officer positions were held by women in 2017. The world economy,
industry and sciences are becoming increasingly digitized, and
these developments are disrupting society and familiar social
processes. Women, however, are still largely underrepresented in
information technology and other STEM fields.
SOLUTION: To create a world in which men and women have equal
opportunities, women need to have an active role in technology and
technological developments. The Zonta International Women in
Technology Scholarship will encourage women to pursue education
and opportunities and take on leadership roles in technology.
FUNDING: US $112,000
Like the JMK and YWPA it appears the recipients will apply through
a club and awards will be:
Club award and amount are determined by club.
District/Region - 32 scholarships of US $2,000 each.
International - 6 scholarships of US $8,000 each.
Stay tuned for information as this project is developed and for ways
individual members and clubs can help.
ADVOCACY REPORT
Denise Sylvester
Are you ready for the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender
Based Violence that starts November 25th and runsthrough December 10th? Your club should be thinking
about participating in this important advocacy campaign.
Advocacy District Committee member Rachelle Forman
took great notes at the Yokohama International
Convention:
Advocacy is a process! Oftentimes we get caught up in
events to promote and educate on the status of women,
but we stop there and do not necessarily finish all of the
steps to elicit change. Remember the main steps for an
advocacy campaign are to advocate and elicit change. To
do so, you should:
1. Analyze and understand the issue
2. Plan and coordinate events to raise awareness about
the issue
3. Make alliances and partnerships with like-minded
organizations
4. Prepare the material
5. Address to the legislatures
6. Evaluate and implement the results
When starting the advocacy process, you also need to
identify the obstacles, opportunities and priorities for
advocacy efforts. The process could take years to see a
difference, but keep in mind - what change do we want to
bring?
There are many advocacy resources under www.zonta.org,
under "Tools", "Advocacy tools" to help your club get
started advocating effectively. Also, Zonta USA Caucus is
a great tool to keep informed about policies and
procedures on a national level.
Look for upcoming advocacy ideas coming from District
15! Please welcome Advocacy Committee Co-Chair Hilary
Henley! Hilary will help us make sure our Canadian Zisters
advocacy projects are heard.

TREASURER'S REPORT
PAYPAL IS BACK
District 15 has a new PayPal account available for clubs
that prefer to send payments electronically and not by
check. Currently, use of PayPal is not mandatory to pay
District 15 dues. However, use is encouraged for Canada
clubs to avoid significant bank fees to submit payment to
the District.
The process is as follows:The club will initiate PayPal payment by emailing a
completed transmittal form to the district treasurer.
Upon receipt of the transmittal form, the district treasurer
will create an invoice through PayPal. A fee of 3.5% for
USA clubs and 4.9% for Canada clubs will be included to
cover PayPal transaction fees.
The invoice will be sent through PayPal to the Club for
payment. The Club will then follow the link on the email
and submit a credit card payment for the invoice.

District Leadership Development News
I am happy to announce that Governor Joy invited me to
fill the newly created position of District Leadership
Development Coordinator. I am also honored to be asked
by President Susanne von Bassewitz to serve on the
International Leadership Development committee.
In my role in the District, I am a resource for the
Governor, Area Directors and club leaders in bringing
Zonta knowledge and leadership skills to all our members.
One of the benefits of membership in Zonta is the
multiple opportunities you have to take on new roles and
learn new skills.
At this time of year, it is important to bring new club
officers up to speed, so as promised in Yokohama, here is
a link to the 2018-2020 Club Officers Training Template:
https://membership.zonta.org/Tools/Leadership-
Development-Tools#HowTo
This template is a resource to use in developing and
delivering training for club officers. It can be adapted to
your needs or used as a reference and has been updated
for the current biennium.
I'd also like to encourage all of our members to become
familiar with our Learning Management System (LMS).You will find it on the Zonta website by accessing My
Zonta and then clicking on the E-Learning button. Please
go through the modules and get your certificates. Then
you can help other members to do the same.
The system is designed for both new and experienced
members to introduce or recall important Zonta
knowledge to enable all of us to be confident and
knowledgeable in our roles as Zontians.
In addition to the LMS, you will also find additional
Leadership Development Tools in the Tools section of My
Zonta.
I will notify you as new sessions come online or new tools
are added. In the meantime, I would love to hear from
you. What would you like to see in Zonta Leadership
Development? How can we be more responsive to your
needs?
You can contact me at: jacquieg@comcast.net
As a 37-year member of the Zonta Club of Pontiac-North
Oakland, a former district governor and international
director, and a 4th term member of the Zonta
International Leadership Development Committee, I am
eager to learn along with you. Tell me what you would
find helpful and what issues you would like to see
addressed in leadership development.
Thank you! Jacquie Gudmundsen
UNITED NATIONS REPORT
By Gayle Manley
Zonta and the United Nations
The first main responsibility of the United Nations
Committee is to promote awareness of the United Nations,
its agencies and programs and understanding of the
relationship between the UN and the programs and
activities of Zonta International and Zonta clubs. Over the
next two years, it will also be important to hear about UNCommittees in District 15 clubs and what they do- sharing
ideas is so important!
Who has a UN Committee in your club? What projects
have you taken on? As District Chair, I will be contacting
presidents to get the name of your UN Committee
chairperson if you have a committee so that we can find
out how others promote our relationship with the UN.
Of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the
United Nations, what goal has Zonta International adopted
as a priority?
Number 5 Gender Equality! Gender equality is at the heart
of so many of the other goals, especially in regards to
women and girls. Check out this link from the ZI website
