WEEK OF MARCH 25 – MARCH 31, 2019 From the Desk of the City Manager The bridge at Sheridan Street at the Florida Turnpike sustained damage during a traffic accident that occurred on the Florida Turnpike on Tuesday. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and Broward County decided to close the eastbound bridge lanes of Sheridan Street to traffic as a precautionary safety measure. The westbound lanes of Sheridan Street remain open at this time. Crews are now crafting a plan to make the necessary repairs to the bridge and roadway. Please be aware, the damage is such, that it may necessitate an extended closure period. Detours are in place which divert drivers south onto 64th Avenue. The detour is sending vehicular traffic through residential neighborhoods. It’s important that drivers respect the homeowners in this area by observing all posted speed limits and use extreme caution due to the presence of children, walkers and bicyclists in the neighborhood. The Hollywood Police Department is holding a voluntary Gun Buyback Event in partnership with 4FNOW this Saturday, March 30th from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Hollywood Police Headquarters, 3250 Hollywood Boulevard. As Chief O’Brien mentioned and I concur, the Department takes the safety of everyone who lives, works and visits Hollywood very seriously. Programs such as this are important in helping to keep our community safer. Simply put, success is when one gun is collected and taken off the streets that would have otherwise fallen into the wrong hands and been used to commit a crime. As an incentive, Publix gift cards will be distributed for each operational firearm turned in. The value of the card, up to $250, is based on type and condition of the firearm. ID is not required to participate. For the safety of everyone involved in this event, guns must be unloaded and kept in the trunk of the vehicle prior to turning them in. For additional questions regarding this event, please call the Hollywood Police Department Public Affairs Unit at 954.967.4371. About two weeks ago Hollywood Beach Safety began noticing an increase in seaweed, technically known as sargassum, washing ashore along Hollywood Beach. This phenomena is quite unusual for this time of the year for our area. While the timing is unfortunate with more people enjoying the beach for Spring Break, the City is taking a proactive approach to ensure they have a pleasant visit. 1
WEEK OF MARCH 25 – MARCH 31, 2019 From the Desk of the City Manager – (continued) The City’s Beach Maintenance crews are working to maintain the beach by turning under the areas with lower concentrations of sargassum, per standard operating procedure. The City has also contracted with a vendor who is helping to rake the thicker, more concentrated, areas into piles for removal. Additional maintenance equipment has been rented to assist with the collection and removal. The window for maintenance is relatively small due to turtle nesting season and the Spring Break crowds. Crews are working hard battling Mother Nature to clear the beach. In many cases, crews are reporting that as soon as they clear a section, thick mats of sargassum wash ashore again making this an extremely frustrating effort. My thanks to all who are continuing to deal with this so others may enjoy their day at the beach. And speaking of enjoying a day at the beach, Spring Break 2019 is in full swing. The City of Hollywood, Hollywood Police Department, Hollywood Fire Rescue and Beach Safety, and the Community Redevelopment Agency ask visitors to our City to please enjoy responsibly. Shore projects help to reduce the damages - economic, environmental, infrastructure, human health and safety of tropical storms and hurricanes. Thousands of residents and businesses in Broward County will benefit from this shore project because storm events erode the beach rather than damaging or destroying coastal infrastructure. Beach renourishment projects also have inherent benefits in restoring critical habitat for shorebird and marine turtle nesting. The construction is estimated to cost $7,864,770 and is fully funded by the US Army Corps of Engineers. Project updates will be available on the Corps web and social media accounts.
