There’s no better way to do this then through the Jr. Eastern Shore Golf League! The JR. ESGL will use this program as a tune up for their Jr. Tour golf tournament events or begin to prepared for their high school try outs. The younger beginning golfers will use the JR. ESGL to learn the game through lessons and golf matches at modified distances. The JR. x high school golf By William Knopf, Head Coach Washington High School Grip it and Rip it! When we are out on the golf course with players, friends, competition, etc. one of the first things that is noticed is the distance off the tee! Hitting a huge drive has effects on the golfer’s mindset almost as much as missing an “easy” putt. This month I will discuss a better strategy that can help lower your scores and make you a better player. THINK BACK TO THE LAST ROUND YOU PLAYED. You are on the tee box of a par 4 or 5 and the first thing that you attempt to do is advance the ball as far as you can like the men and women on Tour, so you Grip it and Rip it! A couple questions come to mind; “How good is a 300+ yard drive if it is in the woods?” “How good is a 300+ yard drive wide left if the hole is a dogleg right?” How can we fix this? HERS’S HOW. Most players have a “favorite” distance, the one that they feel the most comfortable with. For me that distance has been 145 yards for a long time. Therefore if I am not having a good driver day or want to play smart, I will need to do some quick math on the tee box. This technique can be used on any tee box, par 3, par 4 or even a par 5. If the par 4 is playing 325 yards and requires an accurate tee shot, I only need to hit 180-190 yards off the tee. Instead of the driver I can pull out the 2-hybrid or 3-hybrid and place my ball about 145 yards out. Now I am within my “comfortable” distance and should be able to score better. One of the techniques that I use with my players is to play a round with their “favorite club.” With this club, they know the distance the ball will travel. Most players select a 7 or 8 iron, which makes the ball travel on average 120-150 yards. So, let’s look at a medium par "May The Course Be With You" golfnews@easternshoregolf.net MAR.APR.2019 39

EQUIPMENT+INSTRUCTION This is the time of year when all the manufacturers release all of their new equipment with bold promises of faster and farther. Think about it, if they create a club that hits it 5 to 10 yards farther every year the ball would be flying 700 yards by now. Are the players on tour hitting it farther than ever? Yes, but I attribute that more to athletic conditioning than equipment in recent years. Not to mention that they have lengthened the average driver length out to 46 inches. The fastest way to drop your handicap and get better at golf is to find an instructor that can recognize your weaknesses and turn them into strengths. Getting lesson packages will do more for your game than purchasing that new driver every year for $500. The knowledge from lessons lasts a lifetime while that $500 driver depreciates by half every year. Do yourself a favor and make the investment in your golf future. Make a commitment to play better golf by learning. All the best players in the area share two traits, they practice and they have a guru. The choice is yours. golfnews@easternshoregolf.net MAR.APR.2019 43
UMESUPDATE! Every January, for the last 10 years, the students and faculty of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore’s PGA Golf Management Program head south to loosen the rust off our golf swings and attend the PGA Merchandise Show. On January 22nd, the PGA Show opened with an equipment Demo Day where every manufacture has a booth surrounded by a 360 degree driving range at the Orange County National Golf Center in Orlando, Florida. For the students, the Demo Day is equivalent to being a ‘kid in a candy store’. At each booth you are allowed to test new equipment including drivers, fairway woods, hybrids, irons, wedges, and putters around the driving range. January 23rd through 25th, launches the real work for the students and faculty of the PGM Program at the PGA Merchandise Show. As PGA Head Golf Professionals walk around the PGA Show they stop by the UMES exhibitor booth to meet with our PGM students to discuss employment opportunities once the student graduates. “Attendance for our students is paramount as employers within the Chris Prosser, Langston Frazier-student, Cam Smith-student, Suzy Whaley President of the PGA of America golf industry have rolling interviews throughout the PGA Merchandise Show until their staffing level needs are met”, said Billy Dillon, Director of UMES PGM Program. This year, on Thursday, January 24th, we had a special visitor when the 41st President of the PGA of America, Suzy Whaley, stopped by the UMES PGM booth to speak with the students. In 2003, Suzy became the first woman in 58 years to play a tournament on the PGA Tour by qualifying for the Greater Hartford Open. In November, 2018 she became the 41st President of the PGA. This unique experience is invaluable to our PGM students and faculty, which is proven by our 100% annual job placement. It often opens the eyes of those that attend to new possibilities in the field, and provides truly unique settings for industry networking. 44 MAR.APR.2019 ESGM 240.832.3237 www.ESGMagazine.com

Richard Robinson Instructor The Original Golf School secret key We all seek the “secret key” to unlock our potential, the one thing that will ensure power, accuracy, and consistency in our game. The irony is we do find it. It is a magical serendipity. Then just as quickly it vanishes. Yet understanding why a swing key works, is more important than the key itself. A good swing key is a cue to heighten our awareness of an important fundamental. It is personal. What works for one player may have no meaning for another. Yet, considering the favorite swing keys of great players is beneficial. Such keys offer good advice and help us discover our own best keys. Effective keys are not laws to obey beginning with “Don’t”. They are positive affirmations to do the right thing. They are simple, sometimes just one word. Annika Sorenstam’s key: “Six”. On a 10 point scale she wanted her swing tempo to be six. In winning The Open Rory YOUR McIlroy’s key for long shots: “Process”. A disciplined routine and commitment to the shot, not anxiety about the result. Rory’s putting key: “Spot.” Roll the ball over his chosen spot on the line at the right speed and putts will drop. Jack Nicklaus instructed his caddie to remind him PATH when a championship was on the line: “Complete the back swing.” The implicit message: be confident, patient, trust yourself. Quickness and impatience are symptoms of doubt. TO Athletic performance is constrained by training and physique. Our ability to move is defined by strength, flexibility, balance, kinesthetic awareness. The way we move is the function of PAR the way we have habitually performed a particular motor skill. To change ineffective habits, improve fitness and technique requires learning and training away from the course, not during your game. You play with your swing that exists on that day. The full swing feel can change from day to day. The function of your key is to cue your mind to the task at hand and the feeling that is optimal for you. Its effectiveness is as much to eliminate distracting thoughts as to suggest a proper action. To discover your key, accept your tendency for the day. If you are missing the target to the right, or shots are coming up short, adapt. Take a little more club and align yourself to create a margin for error, play to the left side of the fairway or green. There could be numerous reasons for your pattern of the day. Trying to figure out the cause on the course is just another distraction. Adjusting to the shot pattern of the day keeps you in the “game” and doing so you are more likely to rediscover your best swing. Focus on feeling a good swing rather than controlling the ball. Perhaps the best swing key to start the new season is “balance”. Keep your balance and good things happen. Herculean, high speed, explosive swings of Tour professionals are impressive athleticism, but no matter how fast or powerful their effort appears, they maintain balance. Your best swing tempo may be fast or slow, swing length long or short, swing plane upright or flat, but any motion that causes you to lose balance, is flawed. “If I think about one thing beginning a round I am confident I can win. If I think about two things, I might win. If I think about three things, I have no chance.” Bobby Jones. 48 MAR.APR.2019 ESGM 240.832.3237 www.ESGMagazine.com

YOU KNOW THE DRILL by steve menz The work - up/warm - up Try this warm up the next time you go out to play. A bucket of balls usually has between 25 and 40 balls. Please don’t hit 35 drivers and five 7 irons and rush off to the first tee. Work your way up and through your swing. Start by hitting a couple half wedges at a distinct target. Then hit a couple full wedges. Move up to a shorter iron like a 8 or 9 iron for a few swings. Then again to a 5 or a 6 iron. You get the idea. Save your last swings for a driver. Hitting 5 balls with 5 different length clubs will better suit your game when you get to the first tee. Now you know the drill! golfnews@easternshoregolf.net MAR.APR.2019 57
