Principals Report YES…WE ARE ALL BACK ON MONDAY 5 OCTOBER. We only knew of the changes ourselves initially by Facebook and then a late evening communication on Tuesday night that we can return through week one. This is only for standalone primary schools. The four Warrnambool Primary Schools have all agreed that we will all return on Monday 5 October with all classes. We apologise to those of you who have made arrangements from your work or with family for this week. We too have to abandon the plans we had for that week too. However, we are grateful to have the students coming back and looking forward to a very positive term. Please give yourselves a big pat on the back parents. You have looked after your family, many of you with added pressures of changing work conditions and the need to supervise remote learning. Be proud of what you have achieved. Your children will always remember how you have cared for them during this time. We appreciate the sacrifices you have made and the new learning you have undertaken in using technology as well as some of the school work. I am also proud of the staff who have also learned new ways of teaching and connecting with their students. They have also been flexible to help with onsite supervision and supporting these students emotionally as well as with their learning. It has been a very different time and everyone has rallied. I expect there will be some changes to arrangements during the holidays. We will notify you of them as we are notified. What is currently in the operational guide for schools but MAY change are… • Social distancing, non-contact sport, increased cleaning, good hygiene practices with frequent handwashing and access to sanitiser, good ventilation. (Face masks for all aged over 12 (all grade 6 students are excluded)) • Students must bring their own drinking water in their own labelled bottles • HATS…this won’t change • No visitors/volunteers into the school. Parents to make contact via phone, email or WebEx. • The school playground is not for community use at all at this stage. • No excursions, incursions, camps or swimming (this may change). Teachers will do whatever they can to make up for these with other options at school. • Temperature checking of all students (this may change) • We are not sure of staggered starts and exits (we hope to ensure all students have a full day if this is requested.
• The curriculum is adjusted with a key focus on wellbeing, literacy, numeracy and physical activity. • If parents choose to keep their students at home, teachers are not obliged to send home work. They may be able to send, if practicable, any work already planned for that week at school. They are not expected to give detailed feedback and this would only be given when they have a suitable time. If a child has a medical certificate to say they must learn from home, then work can be provided. • Virtual transition strategies will be used…we remain hopeful that we may be able to have actual visits for 2021 preps and year 7s to secondary schools. Stay tuned. • We are waiting advice regarding end of year events including graduation. • You will receive a written report against the Victorian Curriculum but it must include comments on the students’ participation and engagement in the learning from this semester (including remote learning). We will communicate any changes that occur during the holidays via COMPASS and then PLEASE READ THE LINK IN WEEK ONE TERM FOUR …this will highlight any changes to the above. Please note the additional public holiday on the Friday prior to the AFL grand final (Friday October 23). This is for schools this year too due to the delayed date. We wish you all a great break and we are so grateful that for Regional Victoria we have some new options and possibilities to visit other regions. I still long to see my own family but patience is important if we are to be permanently safe. Thank you again. Michelle
Storyathon Competition Term 3 Storyathon Competition Theme: Australia or New Zealand This term these Year 4 students - Remy Boote, Lillias McKellar, Luka Price, Abbey Drinkell, Abra Curran and Gemma Henderson - have been working in a small Literacy group with me every Wednesday to write a microstory of 100 words exactly to enter in an Australia- wide competition. To write a micro story you really have to think about word choice, varying sentence length for effect, engaging the reader and showing your 'voice' in the writing. They have all done a fantastic job and the entries are quite different. Well done to all and congratulations to the finalists - Gemma, Remy and Luka! Michaela Allender
