Printable & Digital Resources! How to Earn 1O,OOO Scholastic Bonus Points Updated August 2021 Would you believe that with a little bit of know-how and persistence, you can get 10,000 bonus points in just a few weeks? It’s true, because Scholastic has a back-to-school deal that makes it possible to earn thousands of bonus points with your first order! If you plan strategically, your class will be able to earn thousands of extra bonus points, even if you teach at a high poverty school. Just follow the Scholastic Stars Countdown system described below or create your own strategic plan and you’ll be able to stock your classroom with dozens of free books! Scholastic’s 2021 Back-to-School Bonus Point Deal Scholastic’s back-to-school deal is to give massive numbers of extra Note: I’m not affiliated bonus points for your first order, as long as you place it before the with Scholastic. But I do end of September. This year you’ll receive a free pack of five books love their resources and I enjoy sharing tips for with your first order totaling $75, plus 800 extra bonus points and getting the most from $10 to spend right away. The number of extra bonus points increases their book club program. with the size of the order, and if you order $300 worth of books, ~ Laura Candler you’ll earn 10,000 extra bonus points! Be sure to read the fine print on the Scholastic Book Clubs website before you get started. Are you wondering how you can possibly get a $300 order when you normally can't even get a $10 order? Don’t worry! If you follow my “Scholastic Stars” goal-setting system, you can do it. It really works! Scholastic Stars Countdown System The goal-setting system outlined below will work as described if you are teaching in a physical classroom. However, if you’re starting the school year online, you’ll need to adapt the plan for remote learning. Fortunately, Scholastic has an online ordering process that’s easy to use and often results in large orders. To make the process even easier, I’ve created Google versions of the printables in this packet. 1. If you don't have a Scholastic account, go to https://clubs.scholastic.com/home and set one up. If you already have an account, log on and explore the features of their online system. 2. If you plan to send home paper flyers and you don’t have any, hunt around your school for the fall 2021 flyers. You might be able to find some that were sent to a retired teacher or someone who moved to a different school. If you can’t find any student flyers, go to your account and order the flyers that are appropriate for your grade level. You can send home several different flyers and combine the order amounts to reach your goal and earn the extra points, so be sure to request any that would interest your students. ©2021 Laura Candler's Teaching Resources - www.lauracandler.com 2
3. Scholastic’s deadline for this offer is September 30th, but you’ll want to set an earlier deadline to allow time to enter your orders. Also, you’ll want to allow time to make one last appeal for book orders if you are close to your goal. I suggest entering Monday, September 20th, as the due date for online orders. If you decide to make a final request, be sure to change the deadline in your online account. You’ll probably want to collect all paper orders by September 27th to give yourself time to enter them into the ordering system. 4. Compose a letter to send to parents that explains how to place an order. Scholastic gives you several options, or you can create one like the sample letter on page 5 of this packet. Use the editable Word version located in the zip file, or this editable Google doc version. Here are some items to include: • A brief explanation of the class goal for this first order and how reaching this goal will benefit their child and the classroom • A list of books that you personally recommend for your students • Your “Class Code” along with a recommendation that parents place their orders online, using that access code. (Note: Online orders save you time and keep you from handling paper and money. They also tend to be much larger than paper orders!) 5. Involve your class in setting a goal for your first order. Explain that if the class can place a large order in September, you’ll be able to buy dozens of books for the classroom! Display the rewards chart on the Scholastic website, and point out that if the class can place a $300 order, you will get 10,000 bonus points to spend on books and materials. 6. Next, display the Scholastic Stars $300 Countdown poster and explain how the goal-setting system will work. Explain that as the orders come in, you’ll color in one star for every $25 worth of book orders. When all stars have been colored, your class will have reached the $300 goal! Laura’s Tip: If you’re teaching in person, use the printable version of the Scholastic Stars poster located on page 6. If you’re teaching online, you can use the Google Slides version instead. Click here to access this virtual poster and copy it to your Google Drive. Then create a viewable link to send to your students. You’ll find directions for coloring the stars in the Speaker Notes area. 7. When you distribute the parent letter and book flyers, ask your students to highlight the due date on the parent letter. Then explain your book recommendations. If you have copies of those books on hand, show them to your students. Provide class time to discuss the other books in the flyer, too. Have your students circle the ones they want to order and allow them to share about books they love. 8. If possible, display the online ordering page and demonstrate how to place an online order. That way your students can help their parents with the ordering process. ©2021 Laura Candler's Teaching Resources - www.lauracandler.com 3
9. It’s a good idea to require your students to have the letter signed by a parent even if they don't think they will be able to place an order. That way the parents will be aware of your goal and may want to help out, even if they don't usually order books. You can also email the letter to your parents and include a link to the online ordering page. 10. To encourage students to take home the letter, you may want to offer an additional incentive if the class reaches its goal. For example, you might want to give each student a Scholastic Book Club coupon that will allow them to choose a book worth up to $6 from a future catalog. If you like this idea, feel free to use the Scholastic Coupons on page 7. If you use Google Classroom, you can assign the Google Slides version to your students after the class goal has been met. Disclaimer: These coupons don’t have any monetary value at An editable version of this page of Scholastic.com, so you’ll have to use bonus points in your coupons is included in the zip file. teacher account to honor the coupons. This is why the incentive should only be given if the class goal is met. 11. As the orders come in, keep a running count of the total on Today’s Total the board. Don’t post individual student names and the amounts of their orders. Just announce and record the total $55.68 each day. If you’re using the print version of the Scholastic Stars $300 Countdown poster, place a piece of clear packing tape over the star in the upper right corner and write the Place clear packing tape daily total on the star with a dry-erase marker each day. over the star at the top of the poster. Use a dry-erase 12. If you have a parent night or open house, distribute extra marker to record the class order forms and promote your class goal. Explain how these total each day. bonus points can benefit the class because you’ll be using them to order free books and materials for your students. Laura’s Tip: If the $300 goal seems out of reach for your class, consider combining your orders with orders from one or more other teachers. After the order is submitted, the teacher placing the order can call Scholastic and ask them to move a designated number of bonus points to the other accounts. Please call Scholastic before you submit the order to make sure that points can be transferred to other teachers. There might be some limitations on how this works.
