Waller Weekly News 29 March 2019 What can only be described as as a phenomenal day’s racing was enjoyed by the team at Rosehill on Saturday thanks to three of our special charges taking home top honours. Our star mare Winx stretched her winning sequence to 32 and 24 Group One races while our outstanding colt The Autumn Sun took his Group One tally to five with another spellbinding performance in the Rosehill Guineas. Both were yearling selections by stable bloodstock agent Guy Mulcaster who is justifiably proud of what is an incredible achievement, as should be all of the support team who ensure our horses are well-looked after both in and out of the stable. Nature Strip’s Gr.1 Galaxy victory was also a huge thrill for the team and his owners and a well- deserved one at that. We can’t wait to see where this scintillating sprinter takes us in the future. The Sydney Carnival continues to serve up some exciting racing this weekend and we hope we can bring some more exciting reflections on Group One results in next week’s edition. We wish all of our connections the best of luck and a safe weekend! INSIDE THIS ISSUE • Winners • News & photos www.cwallerracing.com | admin@cwallerracing.com | +612 9760 5700
Chris Waller Racing - Winners This Week Winx 7yo M Street Cry - Vegas Showgirl by Al Akbar Our pride and joy continued on her winning way and in doing so made it a record four straight Gr.1 George Ryder Stakes victories over 1500m at Rosehill on Saturday. Hugh Bowman once again summed the race up to perfection as he dropped Winx out close to the tail of the field early on in the heavy track conditions. She travelled with ease throughout and Bowman had her in a challenging position as they turned for home and when asked Winx’s response was electric despite the deteriorating track conditions and she swept away for another effortless success. The Autumn Sun 3yo C Redoute’s Choice - Azmiyna by Galileo This brilliant colt once again showed his class when backing up from his Randwick Guineas win a fortnight ago to take out a further Gr.1 success in the Rosehill Guineas over 2000m with regular partner Kerrin McEvoy. McEvoy knows the colt inside out and once again had the confidence to bide his time early in the race, settling him in midfield among his 12 opponents. This powerful son of the great Redoute’s Choice who sadly passed away earlier this week probably wasn’t totally at home on the heavy track conditions but he showed his determination as he powered home in the straight to score a narrow success and in doing so confirmed himself as Sydney’s dominant three year old. Nature Strip 4yo G Nicconi - Strikeline by Desert Sun Nature Strip bounced back from a below par effort at his previous start to win the Gr.1 Galaxy at Rosehill on Saturday over 1100m under new rider James McDonald who was positive from the outset on the son of Nicconi. McDonald controlled the race throughout as Nature Strip travelled strongly at the head of affairs before kicking strongly in the straight to hold off all challengers for a narrow success.
Master Shuhood 4yo G Tamayuz - Walayef by Danzig This imported galloper made the perfect start to his Australian career when winning fresh up at Mornington on Saturday over 1600m. Michael Dee was on board and he rode a patient race giving this resuming stayer plenty of time to find his feet in his Australian debut. Dee allowed him to travel close to the rear of the field early on before bringing him with a sustained run in the straight to score a highly promising first up success. Having been placed at 2300m on the flat in the UK this son of Tamayuz looks an exciting prospect for connections going forward. Borazon 3yo G All Too Hard - Cristal Chateau by Oratorio Borazon scored for the second time in his 11 start career when winning at Eagle Farm on Saturday over 2200m. Robbie Fradd took the mount and he settled him in midfield early on before building his momentum on the approach to the straight. The duo swept to the front with 600m left to run before galloping on strongly for a cosy success. Cormac 4yo G All Too Hard - Saint Minerva by Galileo Star Thoroughbreds galloper Cormac led home a stable quinella at the Sunshine Coast on Sunday. Robbie Fradd opted for an economical run over the 2200m trip and with a break-neck pace set by the tearaway leader Choppa not paying off, the race was set up nicely for a horse like Cormac who comfortably put away his rivals with stable-mate Wu Gok an eye-catching runner-up to finish just under a length in arrears. Thanks to Bradley Photographers, Trackside Photography and Darryl Sherer for our weekly photos.
Taj 3yo G So You Think - Little Surfer Girl by Encosta De Lago This Ingham family homebred son of So You Think is out of former stable favorite Little Surfer Girl and broke through for his maiden win at Hawkesbury on Thursday over 1500m in the hands of Glyn Schofield. Schofield took luck out of the equation as he sent Taj forward from the outset and he was at the head of affairs throughout before showing a good attitude in the straight to fight on for a gutsy success. Reposition 4yo G So You Think - Sun Song by Desert Sun This son of So You Think appreciated the change of scenery as he scored first up from the Queensland stable at Toowoomba on Wednesday over 1640m in the colours of Mr CC Lai. Jeff Lloyd took the mount and he settled Reposition close to the rear of the field early before bringing him with a sustained challenge in the straight to score a strong victory in the soft track conditions which he seemed to appreciate. Outpouring of Emotion for Winx at her Penultimate Start Four Cox Plates, four Chipping Norton’s and now four Group 1 George Ryder Stakes, while cracking the $24 million barrier in earnings, Winx continued on her history-making journey among chaotic scenes at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday. As her career finale draws ever closer, fans took the opportunity to display an outpouring of affection for the Chris Waller-trained daughter of Street Cry (IRE) who stretched her world-record of Group 1 wins to 24 with her 32nd consecutive win. With Hugh Bowman taking bad-luck out of the equation, Winx came four wide on the home turn and went arrow straight to defeat Brutal by three and a half lengths with Dreamforce a further two and three-quarter lengths back in third. It advances the record of Winx to 36 wins and 3 seconds from 42 starts with earnings of $24,009,675. Doing his best to keep his emotions in check, Chris Waller said Winx never fails to deliver. “I guess it was a different sort of run race. A little bit of pressure early, they backed off, Hughie popped out four wide with a bit of arrogance as we’ve seen him do and as he’s entitled to do,” Waller said. “Obviously, everyone expects her to win and that’s one of the reasons she does.” “Every other jockey I’m telling not to be three wide but with her we have to be three wide to stay out of trouble. It’s the longest way home and it was a good fight but the last 200m she just powered away. “She’s a very special horse. I’m sure she knows what’s going on. Just a marvellous horse to work with and we owe it to her to be in this position.
“I know The Queen is fully aware of Winx and we’re very proud of that. We’ve had messages from time to time. She’s brought the world closer to Australian racing. We haven’t been there but we don’t need to be worrying about that. We can just enjoy this for a racing moment that will be remembered for a long time here.” Hugh Bowman took Winx on a length of the straight victory lap on what will be her last race on her home track. “When I asked her to stretch she responded and you could hear the crowd roar. The excitement and the emotion, she responds to that as well as anything else, and once again I am just so proud of her and proud to be a part of it,” Bowman said. “The ground today, although it’s a beautiful afternoon, the ground is significantly testing, and it was quite similar to how it was two years ago when she annihilated Le Romain. Because she works on the track she is very comfortable and has a lot of confidence on it. I think that helps her to perform. “I would never have imagined in those days growing up that I would be riding one of the greatest horses that has ever lived.” A half-sister to Group III ATC Kindergarten Stakes winner El Divino, Winx was a $230,000 purchase by Magic Bloodstock out of the Coolmore draft at the 2013 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. Her dam Vegas Showgirl, a dual Listed stakes-winning daughter of Al Akbar, was a $455,000 purchase by Colm Santry Bloodstock on behalf of John Camilleri’s Fairway Thoroughbreds at the 2008 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale. Vegas Showgirl has a 2yo Snitzel filly named Courchevel and a yearling filly by Exceed And Excel named Covent Garden. On November 30, Vegas Showgirl arrived back from Japan after a date with Deep Impact (JPN). - Breednet.com.au Did Winx think she was at trackwork in George Ryder Stakes win? If you thought Winx’s fourth George Ryder Stakes win looked like a walk in the park, perhaps that’s exactly what the mighty mare thought she was having. Trainer Chris Waller has revealed that Hugh Bowman had Winx so wide on the heavy Rosehill track that racing’s wonder woman actually might have thought she was at trackwork rather than in a Group I race. Perhaps the only difference was there were a few more people at Rosehill on Saturday than she would see at trackwork! “She was so wide out on the track – she does a lot of trackwork there, we very rarely ask her to do anything and I think she might have thought she was doing trackwork,” Waller said on Sky Radio on Sunday morning.
The latest sign of the extraordinary Winx phenomenon was highlighted in the wagering figures from Golden Slipper day from tab.com.au Incredibly, the TAB held far more in its fixed odds markets on Winx to win the George Ryder than it did on all the Golden Slipper horses combined. Meanwhile, Waller says he thinks Winx could have beaten the world’s greatest horses in her career but her racing longevity was because she had been well-placed. “I said to someone yesterday I would love to see her race a horse like Frankel, or whatever the greatest horse has been, I think she could beat whatever that horse may be,” Waller told Sky Radio. “And I guess on their terms maybe they could beat her. “But she wouldn’t be able to do it for as long as she has done. “Had she taken on a Frankel or something early in her career who knows she might have beaten him but she wouldn’t be racing (now).” Waller says while he will miss Winx after her last start in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick on April 13, he is in some ways looking forward to having the pressure valve released after she races for the final time. “I’m actually looking forward to it – I will miss her but it will be a different lifestyle for me, but one I’m looking forward to,” he said. – Racenet.com.au
Fifth Group 1 for The Autumn Sun There is no doubting The Autumn Sun's class but the Chris Waller-trained colt also has a fierce will to win, which he needed in spades when the well-named kiwi Arrogant refused to lay down in Saturday's Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m). With the scratching of Madison County due to an accident in the horse float, The Autumn Sun was at unbackable odds to win his fifth Group 1. Racing much closer to the lead than he did in his heart-stopping win in the Hobartville Stakes, Kerrin McEvoy had the son of Redoute's Choice in a challenging position on the turn. When Arrogant took over from the NZ Derby winner Crown Prosecutor at the 300 metres, The Autumn Sun quickly chimed in and looked set for a comfortable victory. However, Arrogant (Ocean Park) began to rally under Craig Williams but he could not claw back the head advantage with Chapada (Bullet Train) two and a quarter lengths back in third. (images Steve Hart) “That was a good test the last 200m. The inside horse was laying all over him but he just didn’t lie down,” Waller said. “He’s a really tough horse. For a horse with so much speed, he won the Golden Rose over 1400 metres, we really tested him today over 2000m and only a champion comes out like he’s done. “I could see as soon as they went 400m it was going to be a really tough staying test and that’s the way it worked out. Just look at the margins they’ve come home in - it was pretty close from winner to second but behind that there were some really tired horses.
“Mr Messara is a good sportsman and that’s why the horse was here racing. There was concern earlier in the week whether he should be running on a heavy track because he’s still young and not a horse that’s fully matured. It’s through his sportsmanship that we brought him here and he’s a very good horse.” Waller said there had been no decision of the horse’s future after today. “That’ll be up to the owners to decide whether he goes to stud. I get the importance of the horse’s value, he said. The Autumn Sun will retire to stand at Arrowfield Stud who’s owner John Messara said; “You can tell he didn’t enjoy it (today), that was pure guts.” The Autumn Sun advances his record to 8 wins and 1 third from 9 starts with earnings of $3,489,121. Arrowfield purchased 50 per cent of The Autumn Sun before the Caulfield Guineas. The son of Redoute’s Choice was a $700,000 Inglis Easter purchase from the Arrowfield draft for Hermitage Thoroughbreds/ Waller Racing. From a famed Aga Khan family, The Autumn Sun is the second foal of the unraced Galileo mare Azmiyna (IRE), who is a half-sister to Azamour (Night Shift). Honoured as the Champion Older Horse in Europe, England & Ireland in 2005, Azamour’s 6 wins included the Group 1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes and Group 1 Irish Champion Stakes, Group 1 St James’s Palace Stakes and Group 1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes. Chris Waller and bloodstock agent Guy Mulcaster also secured the Snitzel filly out of Azmiyna for $1.3 million at last year’s Inglis Easter Sale. Azmiyna (IRE) has a yearling colt by Not a Single Doubt that has been catalogued as Lot 369 at the Easter Yearling Sale. After foaling a Snitzel filly last spring, Azmiyna (IRE) headed to Japan for a date with Deep Impact. From there she will return home to the Aga Khan’s Gilltown Stud in Ireland.- Breednet.com.au
Chris Waller thrilled as Nature Strip breaks Group 1 duck in Galaxy Nature Strip silenced his knockers by winning his first Group 1 race at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday in a thrilling finish over Pierata. It was Chris Waller’s third Group 1 success of the day after The Autumn Sun and Winx scored popular wins, and the champion trainer was grinning from ear-to-ear after Nature Strip held on in a photo finish. “It’s one of the those feel-good wins where there’s nowhere near as much pressure as there is with The Autumn Sun and Winx,” Waller said. Nature Strip has won some races brilliantly but also flopped in a couple as a well-backed favourite. But the punters were cheering as James McDonald got the $4.20 favourite over the line and Waller knows he’s still a work in progress. Nature Strip firmed from $26 to $11 for the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) on April 6 at Randwick and if he can improve him further, Waller wants to show him off on the world stage. “I’m just trying to get him to relax and enjoy his racing,” Waller said. “He’s a laid-back horse.
“You wouldn’t think he was one of these horses that jumps, charges and can’t control it. He’s far from it. “I’d love to take him to Ascot for the King’s Stand Stakes (1000m in June). It’s the perfect race for him fresh and he might be a stablemate for someone.” Waller was hinting at The Autumn Sun there. “The crowd earlier in the day, that was special to me. It was a Slipper day of years gone by,” he said. “But never walk away on a racecourse thinking you own it because it will change pretty quickly and Winx isn’t going to be here this time next year. I hope The Autumn Sun is.” McDonald praised Waller for getting the sprinter to win a big race, but his ride was just as good after taking him to the front from a wide gate. “The team has done an amazing job. From the first time I sat on him he felt like a really good sprinter,” McDonald said. “Things don’t really go his way and he makes it hard for himself. He sprung the gates really well and I just sat on him like a quiet church mouse. I thought the give in the ground would be to his assistance and it was.” Everest champion Redzel ran eighth but jockey Kerrin McEvoy said punters shouldn’t dismiss him for the TJ Smith Stakes. “We copped a bit of a bump at the 600m which just put us off stride and wasn’t able to regain his ability to travel in that ground and get back into the race,” he said. “He’s much better than that. He pulled up fine and we’ll push on to the TJ.” – News.com.au
Winx trainer Chris Waller deserves knighthood: Lloyd Williams Winx has no peer as a racehorse and her trainer Chris Waller deserves a knighthood for his management of the mighty mare. This is the opinion of owner Lloyd Williams, a respected and authoritative voice in horse racing for more than four decades. Williams, owner of a record six Melbourne Cup winners Just A Dash (1982), What A Nuisance (1985), Efficient (2007), Green Moon (2012), Almandin (2016) and Rekindling (2017), said he could only watch in admiration of Winx after her 32nd consecutive win in the George Ryder Stakes last week. “I’ve got to say Winx is the best I’ve seen,’’ Williams said. “I can’t place anything above her now. I loved Kingston Town but Winx has gone to a new level.’’ But Williams believes Waller doesn’t get the recognitions he deserves for ensuring Winx has been able to race at such a dominant level for four years. “Winx is incredible but Chris Waller is just as incredible,’’ Williams said. “If we had the Queen here they should knight him – he should be Sir Waller. “Chris is extraordinary and has rewritten the record books. He has done it with Winx, he has done it with The Autumn Sun, he has an amazing ability to keep these horses up over a long period. “I know how hard it is to do that and I don’t think people give him enough credit.’’ Williams believes Waller’s management of Winx has been instrumental in the champion mare racing at such a high level for four years. “I know she is a great racehorse but I don’t know whether she would have been anything like this is she wasn’t trained by Chris Waller,’’ Williams said. “You will never be able to work this out but I’m not convinced Winx could have done what she has
done with any other trainer. They might not have conditioned her the way he has. It is very hard to do what he has done with Winx. “I can tell you the job he has got training Winx for middle distance racing compared to training a sprinter is so much more difficult. He obviously has an outstanding eye for a horse. “I haven’t got adequate words to praise ‘Sir Waller’ - great man, great trainer.’’ Date with destiny to farewell the queen The stars are aligning for champion Winx’s farewell race, the $4 million Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes, at Royal Randwick next month. When Winx lines up on April 13, she will be having her final start on the same date that Black Caviar did before her win in the TJ Smith Stakes six years ago. If Winx wins the Queen Elizabeth Stakes as expected, it will be her 25th Group 1 win, a world record. Black Caviar retired with 25 races wins. Winx can finish with 37 career wins, the same number or races the legendary Phar Lap won. And jockey Hugh Bowman is after his 32nd win on Winx, equalling the record of Ted Bartle on High Caste for most wins by a jockey-horse combination. In the countdown to Winx’s final race, Racing NSW has commissioned a television advertising campaign to promote the April 13 raceday. The advertisement will go to air in the next few days and likens Winx’s farewell start to some iconic Australian sporting moments - Cathy Freeman’s 400m gold medal in the 2000 Sydney Olympics, vision of cricket great Don Bradman, Australia 11 winning the America’s Cup and broadcaster Norman May’s memorable “gold, gold, gold” call of the 4 x 100m Men’s Medley relay won by Australia at the 1980 Moscow Olympics. “Winx’s last race will be one of the most memorable occasions in Australian sporting history,’’ Racing NSW chief executive Peter V’landys said. Tickets are selling fast for Winx’s farewell and the Australian Turf Club may have to post the “house full’’ sign with the expectation of a 40,000-plus crowd at Royal Randwick. - Ray Thomas, The Daily Telegraph.

The Autumn Sun Spelled - Future Undecided Chris Waller has announced that Redoute’s Choice’s five-time Group One winning three year-old son The Autumn Sun will be spelled immediately. There had been much speculation since The Autumn Sun won last weekend’s Group One Rosehill Guineas whether he would press on for a clash with Winx in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, be retired to stud immediately or spell with a view to a four year-old preparation. Today has answered one of those questions, however the question of whether he races again remains to be settled with the “ownership group yet to meet regarding his future”. Arrowfield Stud, home of the recently deceased Redoute's Choice bought into The Autumn Sun after his last campaign with the colt set to eventually stand at his birthplace and home of his sire. Chris Wallers full media release is below. Dear Racing Media and the followers of The Autumn Sun, Today it has been my advice to the ownership group of The Autumn Sun (Hermitage and Arrowfield) that he now be spelled. This decision was formed on the basis that he is still a young horse who is continuing to grow and
develop and whilst it may not be seen in that light by racing enthusiasts and his growing fan base, it is my job as his trainer to look after these horses to ensure they can be followed and continue their careers with distinction. It is not my job to make a decision on when he retires, however, it is my job to manage the horse to the best of my ability and I take great pride in what has been achieved thus far. I would like to remind people who may wish to question my decision to spell of some facts in relation to this horse's brilliant career thus far: • This time last year he had not commenced his racing career and since his first start on April 25, 2018 he has now had nine starts including five Group 1 wins; • As a 2YO he had his first race start less than 12 months ago on April 25 over 1200m, which saw him run 1:08.6 at Randwick and on that occasion he came from well back on the turn to pull away late for a brilliant victory; • Also at two he tackled a Group 1 race at only his third start, which he managed to win, as well as defeating two very good horses in Zousain and Fundamentalist; • Following his first Group 1 win, he was given a let-up before resuming over 1500m as a spring 3YO on a very heavy track and as a victim of circumstances suffered his only ever defeat; • In his second start as a 3YO, he dropped back to 1400m for the G1 Golden Rose and from the outside barrier came from last to first to come away with his second G1 win in what is regarded as one of Australia's premier stallion-making races; • At his third start in the Spring he raced in Melbourne in the G1 Caulfield Guineas, his first attempt racing left-handed and came away with a 4.5-length win; • Following a spell, he returned for his Autumn preparation, which has seen his winning sequence continue where he has now extended his record to eight wins in 10 months of racing; and • This horse has exceptional ability and that has allowed him to win 5 x G1 races at this very early age and in an immature state. Providing The Autumn Sun returns for another preparation, and one which I am fully endorsing, I am extremely excited by what may be able to be achieved as a 4YO. I have first-hand experience of the benefit time can provide a horse when looked after during their juvenile years and I feel I am best qualified to make the judgement on the future improvement he will make as a developed and mature horse. The ownership group are yet to meet regarding his future, however, we look forward to doing so to both reflect on what he has achieved and discuss what his future may hold. Further to this release, it comes as a very sad day with the news of The Autumn Sun's sire in Redoute's Choice passing away. I wish to use this opportunity to pass on my condolences to Arrowfield Stud, the Messara family and all of the staff and loyal supporters associated with this wonderful horse. The loss of Redoute's Choice will be felt by our racing and breeding industry and I feel it is important to acknowledge the influence he has had on raising our industry standards from both a racing and breeding perspective over the past 20 years - Breednet.com.au
Verry Elleegant heads Waller Vinery charge There will be no over-reaction from trainer Chris Waller to correct the unorthodox racing style of classy filly Verry Elleegant but he is looking to the addition of ear muffs for Saturday’s Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill. The Kiwi import currently races in a nose roll and, as she showed in winning the G2 Phar Lap Stakes (1500m) at her Sydney debut, she carries her head high. That might be just a quirk of the horse but Waller is concerned about ensuring the filly settles better with the step up to 2000m on Saturday. “It seems to be effective, I guess you could say Northerly had a different racing style as well,” Waller said. “The more you try to change them, often it can bring you undone. “But we will be putting some ear muffs on just to try to get her to relax a bit. That’s the only thing I want to do, get her to switch off a touch.” Verry Elleegant will be one of between two and four runners for Waller in the Vinery, one of the three Rosehill Group 1s he has never won, with the Golden Slipper (1200m) and Coolmore Classic (1600m) the other trophies missing from the cabinet. He also has fellow New Zealand-breds Zalatte and Romani Girl nominated for the 2000-metre fillies feature, in addition to Welsh Legend. Waller said Verry Elleegant has pleased him since her impressive win in the Phar Lap, where she was the only horse in the race to break 36 seconds for the last 600m, running 35.75s. “She was unlucky not to win at her first start for the stable and that was behind a good horse (Amphitrite),” he said.
“She certainly gets her Group 1 chance on Saturday. “She is a horse that doesn’t need a lot of hard work, it’s just more maintenance now.” The daughter of Zed began her career in New Zealand with trainer Nick Bishara, for whom she won two of her three starts. Bishara and the original New Zealand owners still have a 25 per cent ownership interest in Verry Elleegant, while fellow Kiwis John and Mark Carter, and their sister Rachel, who race under Jomara Bloodstock, also have a quarter share. Zalatte could only manage seventh behind Verry Elleegant in the Phar Lap Stakes, and she wasn’t herself in the parade and heading onto the track. Waller said the filly is in good order now and believes she needs firmer footing than the Heavy 10 she struck on March 16. “It was just the very wet track, I would expect her to bounce back on a better track,” he said. “She definitely struggled in the conditions.” Romani Girl and Welsh Legend are more likely to take a softer approach to the G1 Australian Oaks (2400m) on April 13 by contesting next week’s G3 Adrian Knox Stakes (2000m). Rosehill was on Tuesday a Heavy 8 after 132mm of rain in the past week.– Racing.com Master Shuhood wins at local debut The future looks bright for Master Shuhood in Australia after the European import surprised many in making a successful debut at Mornington on Saturday. Trained by Chris Waller, Master Shuhood ($21) settled in the second half of the field under Michael Dee with North Afrika ($6) rolling along in the lead. Dee and Master Shuhood then sliced their way between runners to win the $75,000 Peninsula Essence BM78 Handicap (1600m) by a long neck. “The mile and having those three jumpouts … we were quite confident coming here today that he’d perform well,” said Waller’s Melbourne stable representative Johanne Taylor. “He’ll continue to take improvement from this, hopefully getting to 2000 metres and possibly 2400 metres.” Master Shuhood, who raced under the name Shuhood in England, ended his three-year-old season by finishing third, beaten a length, in a maiden hurdle over 3200m at Ludlow. His two wins as a three-year-old came over 2400m. Master Shuhood is closely related to Waller’s seven-time winner Estikhraaj, who was purchased from the 2015 Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training sale for 30,000 guineas ($59,000). Shadwell Stud offered Master Shuhood at the 2017 Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training sale after winning one of two juvenile starts. Trainer Ian Williams bought Master Shuhood for £30,000 ($53,000), won nearly as much on the track over the next 12 months and then put him through the 2018 sale, where Waller then acquired him for 60,000 guineas ($118,000). The stable used last year’s Mornington Cup meeting to unveil Brimham Rocks. Brimham Rocks cost 340,000 guineas ($670,000) from the 2017 Autumn Horses in Training sale, Waller’s most expensive purchase from the sale since 2006. The son of Fastnet Rock was runner-up in his 2000-metre Benchmark 90 race at Mornington and whilst winless in Australia has been placed in eight of 11 starts since relocating, including runner-up in last year’s G1 Metropolitan Handicap (2400m) at Randwick. – Racing.com
Upcoming runners
29 March 2019 Please see below an update on our runners at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday: We enter the third and final day of the Rosehill stage of the Autumn carnival which has been a successful one for the stable and we look forward to ending on a high note tomorrow. Below is a brief outline of our runners - due to multiple runners in some of the races I will give you a very brief outline on some of them: Race 6 – Vinery Stud Stakes – 2000m VERRY ELLEEGANT – We are looking forward to this race, she is in great form as we saw last start when winning against the boys where she was dominant and certainly got through the conditions well. Whilst it is a nice, fine and warm day at Rosehill today which will see the track improve quickly, the forecast unfortunately for the morning isn’t so great. She is a good horse to have in the race as she appears to be equally as effective on the heavy as she is on the soft, which could well be the case tomorrow. She does all of her work in the earmuffs so nothing is really going to be new for her from a perspective of performance. I do think she will settle better than what we have seen in the past but until you see them race under pressure, you can’t be high in confidence. We certainly feel it is the best way to enable her to win a Group 1 race over the extended 2000m distance. Safely through that and providing she is doing things right, then the Oaks will be on the cards but we do need to see her switch off and conserve some energy. Obviously we think she will be very hard to beat tomorrow. ZALATTE - She was very good first up in the Surround but in my opinion she came unstuck on the wet track last start so I certainly have reservations about running her if the track got too heavy. The backup plan would be the Adrian Knox next week to still continue on towards the Oaks. Her work has been good through the week and I simply put her last start performance down to the state of the track. Race 7 – Kia Tancred Stakes – 2400m PATRICK ERIN – He got a nasty bump as they jumped and ended up pulling up with a sore foot last start, he was sound within three days of the race and after the foot problem was discovered, it quickly improved and he has obviously trialled well since that. He heads to the races tomorrow as a fit and sound horse, he has a nice draw, his wet track form is fairly good so he should get a lovely run from the good gate and hopefully bounce back to run in the top three to suggest that he is on track for the Sydney Cup in two weeks’ time. BRIMHAM ROCKS - His runs have been below what I have expected from him this preparation, last start he ran a little better, obviously up in distance so there was some merit in that run. He steps up in distance again tomorrow which will suit. He has an awkward barrier, we will simply see how he jumps and work out from there where he can slot in. Hopefully two weeks out from the Sydney Cup he can run a creditable race to go into the Cup with a bit more confidence. Race 2 – Bisley Workwear Neville Sellwood Stakes – 2000m LIBRAN – He will only run if the track is soft or better, if it gets to that heavy stage we will scratch and simply wait for a race later in the carnival or possibly head up to Queensland. The horse seems well, we have done everything we can to keep his fitness levels high, despite missing a number of races due to wet tracks. Race 3 – TAB Tulloch Stakes – 2000m MANGIONE - He will improve up to this 2000m distance - being a son of Fiorente, the distance is what he needs but he does need to improve and clearly there is some in form New Zealand horses in the race who are going to be hard to beat. Let’s hope that up to the 2000m distance, on the back of an improving run last start, that he can at least be competitive. Race 4 – Jim Beam Emancipation Stakes – 1500m NOIRE – She jumps from barrier 1 here, her run last start was good where she had drawn wide and was off the track all the way so had she drawn a better gate and been closer to the fence I think she would have finished close to the place getters. Based on that I am sure she will run well tomorrow. Race 5 – E-Group Security Star Kingdom Stakes – 1200m CELLARMAN - He resumes here and he is likely to need the run but he is a good horse on his day and we hope to see him reaching his peak fitness and form further into the preparation. He has got some soft track form but realistically he will be better in two to three runs time. CHARGE - He has drawn wide in gate 10, my intentions are to run at this stage but if the track got too wet we would look at saving him for a race later in the carnival. The horse is well, he is racing out of his grade here but there hasn’t been a lot of options to run him after missing previous races due to wet tracks. His work at home seems to be good. Race 8 – PFD Food Services Doncaster Prelude – 1500m We are well represented here with a lot of horses resuming: MISTER SEA WOLF - He likes the wet but he does carry a big weight and could be a bit vulnerable late first up. He will end up heading to Queensland for races like the Hollindale and Doomben Cup. TOM MELBOURNE – He comes off a similar profile to winning back in January where he was fresh, off the back of a jump out at Flemington. He should get cover from the good draw which is so important for Tom. MY NORDIC HERO - He fits a very similar profile to Mister Sea Wolf and we will be targeting similar races. First up he could be vulnerable on a wet track but he has got some soft track form. KAONIC – I don’t think he is as effective on a heavy track but he certainly does have good soft track form. His fitness levels are continuing to improve and he is certainly a chance tomorrow. SEAWAY – I put his run down to the wet track last start which was well below what we have been used to seeing. Hopefully for his sake the track doesn’t get too heavy because he is certainly going to be vulnerable if that is the case. On a soft track I think he can bounce back to some of his better form. ABDON - His work has been good, his first up run was terrific, he has drawn to get a reasonable run in midfield and he should be strong late. Race 9 – The Championships on Sale Handicap – 1400m UP ‘N’ ROLLING – Hopefully we will get away with a soft track and if that is the case he will run and run well, despite drawing wide. ZOURKHAN – He loves the wet tracks, the wetter the better for him but you do need to question horses first up on heavy tracks. His first up record is very good so I expect him to run well. HOGMANAY – There was a lot to like about his first up run and he will make good natural improvement. We are likely to get similar track conditions to last start so he will be running home well at the finish. STAR OF THE SEAS – He should be very hard to beat again and the only difference is the wide draw. We were quite positive on him last start and he was ridden perfectly by Kerrin on that occasion who rides again tomorrow. There looks to be quite a bit of pressure in tomorrow’s race so let’s hope he can find a position from the wide gate. CALCULATED - He has been back to the trials after his first up run and he trialled well so he will be fitter, but hopefully the track is no worse than soft for him.
