WELCOME
Welcome horseman horsewomen owners and guests to beautiful
Sunshine Meadows in Delray Beach Florida. The Winter capital of
Champions and future Champions in training!
This is my first of what I hope will be many attempts to make it
easier and more fun for everyone to identify and watch these
beautiful Trotters and Pacers prepare for the upcoming 2019
racing season. It has truly been a wonderful experience for me in
communicating with everyone who cares about these magnificent
animals! Going around the farm and collecting all of these rosters
from you wonderful folks has been a fantastic experience for
me! So please stop Barn number 12 on the deck especially on a
Saturday morning and have some bagels and coffee with us. I
want to especially thank all the wonderful advertisers who truly
made this a fantastic experience and who made this possible!
I hope you will forgive me for any and all mistakes and omissions
that I have possibly made and I promise to do better the next time.
Saturday mornings on the deck could not be possible without

54THE RETURN OF
MARY LOUISE
Long before Al Gore invented the internet and whomever it was that thought
of simulcasting, the only way to keep track of who was racing and winning at
the various racetracks was via the weekly magazines of The Harness Horse and
Horsesman and Fair World.
Don’t know about you, but I haunted Hotalings out of town newsstand next to
the New York Times building in Times Square to obtain my copy.
And a main feature in both magazines during the winter time was the training
report by Mary Louise MacGregor from Ben White Raceway in Orlando, Florida
where most of the big Grand Circuit stables located for winter training.
Mary Louise MacGregor would watch and clock each of that season’s 2-year-
olds and report on a weekly basis how they did and more importantly how
they looked doing it.
I can still visualize her writing “The tall Meadow Skipper was cheerful in 2:30”
and whatever the fraction actually was in an issue that had to be somewhere
around March or even April of 1962. Don’t know why that stayed with me, but
it did.
Fast forwarding to 2019, through the efforts of one Jeffrey Bell, full brother
to Captain Myron we will have the Sunshine Meadows roster book which will
feature head numbers for each of the in training 2-year-old colts and fillies from
the individual stables housed at Sunshine.
Just think the assembled “Deckhands” will no longer have to yell “Who’s that?”
while noshing Murray’s bagels each Saturday as we’ll have a book identifying
just which horse is which as they saunter by prior to turning.
So let us return to those days of yesteryear when we read and anticipated the
reports of Mary Louise MacGregor except that in this the modern era, we’ll
have the SUNSHINE MEADOWS ROSTER BOOK to aid in identifying the young
trainees. Might not see another “Tall Meadow Skipper training cheerfully”, but
I bet we’ll see more than a few seasons champion colts and fillies once again.
