Situated in the heart of wine country in central
California, just 25 minutes from Santa Barbara-
the Riviera of the West Coast - Santa Ynez Valley
and the surrounding region has long been a mecca
for Arabian horses and their fanciers. In fact,
Santa Ynez Valley is known all over the world as
“The Valley of the Arabian Horse.” That’s quite an
accolade in an intensive horse community which
today boasts representatives from over 60 different
breeds of horse.
Today’s 21st century Santa Ynez Valley breeders
compete, buy, sell and export Arabians all over the
world. Any national or international competition
in the world is likely to have representatives or
relations of Santa Ynez Valley horses in the top
line-up. Servicing the training needs of these
farms has become a high priority as well, and
several outstanding horse trainers covering a wide
variety of disciplines are located in Santa Ynez.
16 SYVAHA SYVAHA 17Known and valued for great courage, stamina and speed in addition
to extravagant beauty, the Arabian became the mount of choice for
kings and generals over the centuries, and played a key role in the
creation and expansion of many empires over the ages. The Arabian
we know today is the result of centuries of selection for certain traits
and characteristics, originally by nomadic Bedouin breeders under
extraordinarily harsh environmental conditions.
What is it about Santa Ynez Valley in particular that attracts so
many passionate Arabian breeders and fanciers? Christie Metz of
Silver Maple Farm has this insight to offer: “Driving up Highway
154 and climbing over the approximately 2500 foot high San Marcos
Pass opens a panoramic view into one of the most visually stunning
valleys in the United States. Santa Ynez Valley contains four towns
within a triangle if you were looking down on a map of the area:
Santa Ynez, Solvang, Buellton and Los Olivos, all separated by
open ranch land spotted with majestic oaks spreading over the hilly
landscape. All of this land is bordered by a mountain range running
east to west, an unusual occurrence when adjoining other ranges
that run north and south. This geographic anomaly has created an
exceptionally pleasant environment conducive to many agricultural
pursuits, particularly horse breeding and viniculture.”

farms. Each town features its own unique architectural flavor,
varying from the charming Danish village of Solvang to the
Western/Victorian style of Santa Ynez and Los Olivos. Solvang,
Buellton and Santa Ynez all feature wine tasting rooms, boutique
shopping and a wonderful variety of restaurants.

The Arabian Foal Festival,
a show for weanlings and
yearlings held in the beautiful

Bart wanted to create a forum
for Santa Ynez Valley Breeders
to present and share their young
horses with other horse lovers
and the public. He prioritized
FOAL establishing a level playing field,
where all participants felt they
had a fair shot of getting a prize.

the event came together beautifully and word of the new
Arabian Foal Festival spread like wild fire.
Both Age Group and Gender classes were offered for Show
foal and Performance foal divisions, with no crossover.
A Trail-in-hand class for yearlings was added, which proved
to be popular. Classes were divided into sections of no more
than five horses. First and second were placed in each section
and shown back the following day in the corresponding
championship class, which awarded a gold silver and bronze
title. Judges Bill Melendez, Cynthia Richardson, Becky Rogers
and Mark Wharton were each provided a microphone to
explain their reasons for the section placings. This created
both an ethically transparent as well as educational experience
for the audience. A scorecard was used for the championship
classes with two judges per championship.
The weekend came and so did the horses!
The classes were full of beautiful babies, many with their dams
at their side. Hundreds of spectators arrived, local horse
fanciers as well as many from around the country and overseas.
They stayed… for both days! When exhibitors arrived, they
were pleased to find their stalls were already bedded, so their
babies didn’t have to wait around in the trailer. That small but
significant courtesy set the atmosphere for the whole show;
everyone was excited to be part of this new concept.

Championship Sunday
Sunday commenced with an impressive, 4 horse Trail-in-hand class and was
followed by a day of Foal Championships. Long time Arabian breeder Wayne
Newton flew out from Las Vegas to present the trophies. Since Santa Ynez Valley
is blessed with a large number of top quality performance horses, a representative
selection was presented between classes, illustrating for the audience all the
performance potential offered by the youngsters exhibited in the show. Proudly
