City of Vandalia Parks & Recreation Vandalia Senior Center March, 2019 Volume 07 Issue 3 Stonespring Lunch & Learn on Tuesday, March 5 at Noon Holly Dethardt from Stonespring will order your lunch. Tonya Lee Carrie will be the speaker. She is an author, illustrator, speaker, and owner of a ministry. Tonya will present “LIVING LIFE'....Courageously With Purpose! “ Her talk will include inspirational and motivational speaking, music, poetry. and some audience engagement! Limit: 100 Tonya Lee Carrie waived her usual speaking fee to have the opportunity to share her journals with you. "Courageous Finishers", takes you on a 21-day non-denominational spiritual journey. It involves coloring creative crosses, while meditating and reflecting on scriptures and short prayers. Journaling space and extra pages for coloring are provided to help readers capture their thoughts and feelings about daily experiences. The journals can be used by adults, teens, and older children. You can look at one of her journals in the office. The books are available to purchase for $12 now through March 5. Tonya will also be at a table with her journals before and after the lunch on March 5. On that day, she will have a new 40 day journal with her that you can purchase for $15. They might be here earlier. She has offered to give a free workshop at the center if fifty of the journals are purchased. You Are Invited to Dinner and a Musical on Thursday, March 21 at 6:00 p.m. The Vandalia-Butler High School is again inviting you to enjoy dinner in the cafeteria. So many people have signed up in the past that they have had to limit it to 80 people. At 7:00 p.m., you will watch the high school version of Chicago in the auditorium. Limit: 80 Deadline: Monday, March 19 Directions: From the Senior Center, turn left onto Dixie. Just as you pass the high school, turn left onto Alkaline Springs. Turn left into the parking lot by the baseball fields. Go through the front doors. In the past, there have been students to guide you to the cafeteria. An Achievement: 100 Years!! Alice Bair and Ruth Flory are both turning 100 in March! You can send in a card or drop one off at the office for each of them. Send in cards for Alice by March 8. Send in cards for Ruth by March 20.
LUNCH & LEARNS Cypress Pointe Lunch & Learn on Fri., March 8 at Noon Poetry Potts from Cypress Pointe will bring lunch from their kitchen. Chris Kanzari and Dave Treadway from Heartland Insurance Group will be here on March 5 to call bingo. They are returning to present “Did You Know This?” on March 8. Some of the things they will share is how to get help with prescriptions through Social Security. Did you know that you can earn up to one year in college funds for your grandchildren just by going to the gym and it isn’t your money? Come find out how. Limit: 50 Garden Court Lunch & Learn on Tuesday, March 12 at Noon Tiffany Childers from Garden Court will provide your lunch. Last November KaLynn Clark gave a presentation about 4 Paws for Ability in Xenia. You will watch a 52 minute documentary called Dogs that can be considered Part 2 about 4 Paws. In this show, you will see part of the 4 Paws facility and get a glimpse at how they train their dogs. You will follow the journey of a family with a daughter with epilepsy and see the impact on their lives. Then you will watch as the family goes through the process of getting a specially trained dog and takes a twelve day training class. At the end of you will see what life is like after the dog has been with them for awhile. Limit: 60 Otterbein Lunch & Learn on Thurs., March 14 at 11:00 A.M. Kyle Crowder from Otterbein will be providing your lunch. He will be comparing different types of senior living and how different companies run their communities. You will get to see how Otterbein Senior Life Ministries liberate elders (or does things differently). It’s a small house with a big difference. Limit: 100 Carriage Inn Lunch & Learn on Tuesday, March 19 at Noon Lia Price from Carriage Inn will bring lunch from their kitchen. Pat Brown, a retired Troy police officer who now is a certified AAA driving instructor, will be presenting “Keep Your Keys”. She will talk about ways to stay as independent as possible and drive as safely as possible. Pat will also discuss when you know that it is time to tell yourself or someone else that it is time to stop driving. Pat Brown along with Laura Cruea from Montgomery County Safe Communities will also be explaining a special event on Friday, April 5, in the Vandalia Methodist Church parking lot. It is also called “Keep the Keys”. They will make sure your car is fitted to you with a very short checklist. Limit: 50 Page 2
LUNCH & LEARNS Crossroads Rehab Lunch & Learn on Fri., March 22 at Noon Rachel Berkshire from Crossroads will bring your lunch. 106 year ago, March 22, was on a Saturday and the day before Easter. The area experienced a sunny day until the sec- ond storm arrived, dropping temperatures to the 20s, which caused the ground to freeze on the surface then thaw by late afternoon. Mark Risley will present “The Flood of 1913”. He will share many vintage photos as he tells about Dayton before the flood, the causes of the flood, and the rescue and clean-up efforts. He will also tell you about the long term re- sults of the area’s response to this event. (90 min.) Limit: 55 Crossroads Investment Planning Lunch & Learn on Tuesday, March 26 at Noon Brian Addis from Crossroads Investment Planning will bring pizza for lunch. He will talk about retirement income planning. The Laurels Lunch & Learn on Thurs., March 28 at 11:00 A.M. Christopher Norman from The Laurels will bring your lunch. Lori Reeves and Pam Hall from Home Instead will be here. Lori will present “Caring for the Senior’s Mind, Body, and Soul”. She will give you lots of ideas to keep your mind sharp, to try to help your body to stay in shape to be able to do what you need to do, and to find ways to feed your soul. Limit: 50 Spring Hills Singing Woods Lunch & Learn on Fri., Mar. 29 at Noon Deirdre Middlestetter from Spring Hills Singing Woods and Brien Jackson from Spring Hills Home Care will provide your lunch. Brittany Stout, an Exercise Physiologist, who works for Spring Hills Home Care will be exploring natural ways to prevent cognitive de- cline. She will be discussing what foods fuel the brain, as well as what foods optimize the power of the brain. Brittany will dive into specific nutrients responsible for the creation of memories and thoughts, and look at other, less known ways to prevent cognitive decline. There will also be handouts available! Limit: 50 Let’s Eat Out on the 2nd Wednesday and the 3rd Tuesday Evenings! 2nd WEDNESDAY: Sign up to eat out on Wednesday, March 13. The group will meet at TJ Chumps at 7050 Executive Blvd. in Huber Heights at 5:00 p.m. 3rd TUESDAY: Sign up to eat out on Tuesday, March 19. Events A New Bingo Game Chris Kanzari and Dave Treadway from Heartland Insurance Group will be calling bingo on the first Tuesday of every month right after the Lunch & Learn at 1:45 p.m. in the dining room. Chris and Dave will bring with them their own machine that selects the bingo ball to call next. A New FREE Exercise Class on the First and Third Fridays Amy from First Light Home Care will be coming at 10:30 a.m. to lead this class. Go to page 8 to learn more. A French Class Every Wednesday Sign up to come to a relaxed French class on Wednesdays from 11:00 to 11:30 a.m. Viviane Olsen was born and raised in France. She is a business translator. Viviane will teach you how to speak some French. She can also tell you about living in France. Viviane currently plans to just have classes on the four Wednesdays in March. If there is enough interest, she might consider more classes. New Exhibit in the Lobby at the Vandalia Government Center Artists in the Friday morning drawing group will be putting works on display in the Government Center at 333 James E. Bohanan Memorial Drive, to the right of the post office. The artwork will be on display from March 4 through April 11. You can view the drawings on Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.. Some of the works will be for sale. Senior Home Choice in Our Neighborhood Did you know there was a senior living choice just minutes from us on the other end of Tionda? Cassandra from Senior Home Choice can tell you about it. She will be here on Thursday, March 21, from noon to 2:00 p.m. There will be snacks for you also! Make a FREE Card on Fri., March 1 at 1:30 p.m. Tiffany Childers from Garden Court has designed another great card for you to make. This is a free class. Art and More Make a FREE Bunny on Wed,, March 6 at 1:00 p.m. Nancy Lacey from Siena Woods is bringing more socks! This time it is to make a bunny. Please arrive by 1:00 p.m. Limit 15 A Paint Project on Mon., March 11 at 10:00 a.m. Even if you have never held a paint brush before, Terri Lynn from Terri Lynn Art Studio and Gallery in Fairborn says she can guide you through painting this picture. Terri Lynn has classes at the Huber Heights Senior Center and the Fairborn Senior Center. We picked out an 8” x 10” spring painting for this class. The example was painted by a student. The charge is $15 for the 2 1/2 hour class. If 10 people show up the day of the class, the fee will be reduced to $10 each. Limit: 10 Color Project on Wed., March 13 at 1:00 p. m. In honor of the Festival of Color, Leesa Haapapro is returning to lead you in making a color resist drawing. You can make your own drawing or use one she brings. You color with oil pastels then scratch off some of the color. Some examples are in the office window. Pay $7 in class. Make FREE Cards on Friday, March 15 Tresa Arnold from Brookhaven and Tina Adducchio from Village at the Greene will have a class from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. They will bring lots of materials for you to use along with equipment and paper from the Senior Center and Toni. You can make up to three cards for Easter, birthdays, and more. Please wait to pick up materials until after the introduction. Limit: 18 Make an Easter Card on Wednesday, March 20 This is an iris folded card but one of the easiest you will ever make since it is all the same paper. You just follow the lines and tape down the paper strips. You can make this card even if you have never done iris folding before. When you sign up, mark if you want a navy or pink paper border so the paper can be cut ahead of time. Please bring a pair of scissors and Scotch tape. This class starts at 1:00 p.m. on March 20. Information First Movie on the First Friday at 1:00 p.m. With Lynn Specht with Medical Mutual We didn’t get to see this movie in February because the center was closed for snow. This movie has a lot of twists to it! The movie, A Simple Favor, centers around Stephanie (Anna Kendrick), a mommy blogger who seeks to uncover the truth behind her best friend Emily's (Blake Lively) sudden disappearance from their small town. Stephanie is joined by Emily's husband in this stylish thriller filled with twists and betrayals, secrets and revelations, love and loyalty, murder and revenge. R 1 hr. 57 min. Crime/Mystery Second Movie on the Third Fri. at 1:00 p.m. With Treats from Rachel Berkshire from Crossroads Rehab In the movie, The Glass Castle, a young woman reflects on her unconventional upbringing with her nonconformist nomadic parents. Her mother who's an eccentric artist (Naomi Watts) and her alcoholic father (Woody Harrelson) would stir the children's imagination with hope as a distraction from their poverty. Now married to a man who works in finance in New York, she faces criticism from her parents that she's betrayed their values. This is based on a true story. PG-13 2 hr. 7 min. Biography/Drama A FREE Essential Oils Class on Friday, March 22 at 1:45 p.m. Wendy Archer from Friendship Village will bring all the materials you need to make an essential oils roller. She will teach you how to mix the oils and she will explain what each oil does. You will be making a lip balm. Please arrive by 1:30 p.m. so the substitutes will know if they can stay or not. Limit: 12 Open Art Class on Thursdays from Noon to 3:00 p.m. Anyone with an art project of any type to bring it on Thursdays. Get some work done and chat with others. Anyone Want to Play Euchre on Wednesdays at 1:00 p.m.? Please sign up on the bulletin board if you are interested. They can also teach you how to play if you have not played before. This is a short and cautionary tale demonstrating that observing traditions is not always a pleasant and favorable affair. Now There is an Exercise Class on All Four Fridays! A New FREE Exercise Class on the First and Third Fridays Amy Karshner from First Light Home Care has been trained in leading Ageless Grace exercise classes. She will be coming at 10:30 a.m. on the first and third Fridays to lead this class. This is a seated exercise class that can be enjoyed by everyone even if you have limitations. The Ageless Grace class also involves fun and laughter which is good for you too! Come try out this class. No need to sign-up, just show up! FREE Exercise Classes on the Second and Fourth Fridays The Stonespring Transitional Care Center is offering two 10:30 a.m. classes instructed by a licensed physical therapist. Classes will adapt towards the needs of the participants incorporating different intensity methods and education into the circuit. Please sign up for each session so they can plan ahead. Try out the FREE Golden Qi Class on Tuesdays at 10:00 a.m. Bruce and Vevia Enix teach Golden Qi which is a form of Tai Chi that is performed while seated. This exercise improves balance, reduces joint pain, increases calmness, improves reasoning abilities, and improves the quality of your life. This class can be taken by anyone including those with balance issues, using a cane, or walker. Come try out this class even if you have not been in class before. You don’t need to sign up. Information Do You Have a Talent? Do you have a talent that you would like to share? The Senior Club is looking for entertainment at the potlucks on the first and third Fridays each month. If you are interested, contact the office. Donations Needed The center needs individually labeled tea packets, both regular Lipton tea and other flavors. Winter Closings Policy Reminder If the Vandalia Schools are closed for weather, the Senior Center and the Van Tran van will be closed. If the schools are on a delay, the center is open. The closing information will be put on the Weather Hotline: 552-2200. You can also check the City of Vandalia’s Parks and Rec Facebook page. AARP Tax Help Locations You must take last year’s tax return, a photo ID, your social security card, and proof of medical insurance. Everyone at the center that afternoon can have a piece of cake but the birthday people get their cake first! Art Appreciation Meets Every Second and Fourth Tuesdays Join the art appreciation group for one of their discussions. You don’t need to sign up. You meet at the front tables in the dining room at 1:30 p.m. The group discusses various artists or topics related to art. Sometimes they watch part of a DVD about art. Winter Donations The Vandalia Food Pantry would like to thank you for all of your donations this winter. You donated 85 winter scarves, 158 hats, 48 pairs of gloves, and 8 baby blankets. Thank-you!
