FROM OUR CAREER TEACHER TEAM MARCH 2020 Student Career News Career Updates from Sun West School Division * Canadian Student Leadership Conference Opportunity: Sun West School Division Students who will be in Grade 9-12 in the upcoming 2020-2021 school year and are interested in a Student Leadership opportunity may want to investigate the chance to apply for a board -sponsored travel to the Canadian Student Leadership Conference in September 2020. Student leaders from across Sun West School Division are busy planning their annual Student Leadership Conference open to Grade 7 through 12 students from across our school division. SLC will be held in Kenaston on April 2nd (evening) and 3rd. Life is Worth Living and Sarah Wells will be presenting on topics that matter to students. As well, session and activities led by our Sun West student leaders will engage delegates. If interested, please express interest. * ROADS TO SUCCESS Career Fair for Grade 10 and 11 Sun West School Division Students will be held on April 30th in Rosetown, SK. This will be an incredible life/career exploration opportunity for our students. * Telemiracle: We recognize the incredible contributions of our students, staff, and schools in support of this year’s Telemiracle. It is so amazing to see performances and hear stories of how our small rural communities have come together to raise funds & awareness for such an important cause. Fine examples of volunteerism, leadership, character, and kindness. Kudos all! 1
FROM OUR CAREER TEACHER TEAM MARCH 2020 CWEX Spotlight Career and Work Exploration Student CWEX courses provide students with ‘real-world’ experiences. Meet Lance Hefervez. Lance is a Grade 12 student in Loreburn. He is completing a Career and Work Exploration A30 course with plans to become a chef upon graduation. His CWEX Teacher, Mr. Johnson, was able to secure a suitable placement for him at the Sheraton. He is a talented student and is further developing his trade- specific and transferable skills through this work-based learning opportunity. The executive chef hopes to hire him when he graduates. Lance is planning on becoming an apprentice and getting his journeyperson certificate to become an executive chef in the future. Congrats on a very successful placement experience, Lance. Keep up the great work! Our School Division offers a variety of work-based learning opportunities. These courses help students gain ‘real’ experience in the world of work in a safe and supportive environment. Students develop self confidence, improve 21st Century skills, and develop a greater awareness of the needs of business, industry, and our extended community. Saskatchewan Cancer Agency: This organization provides information and educational opportunities for students interested in the field of radiation therapy. “Radiation therapists are involved in all aspects of treatment, planning, and delivery of care of cancer patients.”. They offer a Bachelor of Science in Medical Radiation and an Advanced Diploma in Health Sciences through a unique partnership opportunity. For more information, see www.saskcancer.ca/rtschool or email rtschoolinfo@saskcancer.ca. D. A United States College Expo is scheduled for April 19th in Calgary. Register in advance. E. Financial Literacy Information for Families: NEW! Free Personal Finance Essentials Course offered online through McGill and open to all Canadians through the RBC Launch initiative. F. Find Your Fit with SK Youth Apprenticeship: “SYA offers high school students the opportunity to learn more about skilled trades career pathways and gain a head start on their skilled trades career.” G. Women in Trades and Technologies: Sask Polytech offers a number of fantastic trade- related hands-on learning opportunities for women 15 years of age and up. H. WorkSafe Saskatchewan: invites Grade 9-12 students to create a 2 minute video with a worksafe message. The first prize is $1,000! See the WorkSafe Website for eligibility, criteria, rules, regulations, etc. #FocusOnSafety Due March 26th. I. Skills Canada: is an event which allows students to demonstrate their skills. The Saskatchewan Provincial Competition is scheduled for April 2020 but March 13th is the Registration deadline. If interested in participating, check with your Career Counsellor or Teachers at your school to see if there are possibilities to attend. J. Seeking Employment?: Now is a great time to begin updating your resume, cover letter, ePortfolio, etc. and begin researching summer job or other work opportunities. Students will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the language while experiencing another region in Canada. b. Student Exchange Programs offer Grade 10 and 11 students the opportunity to host students from Quebec for three months in the fall before travelling to Quebec for three months. c. Communicating for Agriculture Education Program: This is an opportunity for students to gain agriculture work experience in various parts of the world. d. Encounters with Canada e. Canada Youth Forum f. Variety of Canadian Opportunities L. Augustana College (U of Alberta affiliated college): a. Preview Day March 20th. An opportunity for high school students to learn more about programs/admissions. Register in advance. M. Great Plains College: a. Open Houses - Various dates or book a visit on your own. b. Practical Nursing Program in Swift Current – deadline is March 31st and in Biggar – deadline is June 30th. c. Scholarships – there are a number of Entrance Scholarships, Grade 11 Early Entrance Scholarships, etc. available. Please inquire for details. N. University of Alberta a. Indigenous Student Discovery Day: Indigenous students in Grades 10, 11, and 12 are invited to take part in a one-day uAlberta experience on April 29th. Must register in advance. b. Infinite Possibilities – Explore programming options today. c. Registration 101 Workshops – There are a number of online workshops with registration tips, how-to videos, etc. d. Mark updates: Students who have applied can continue to update marks and submit courses as new information becomes available. e. Campus Tours: Bookings are available. 4

Kelowna: An Outdoor Playground with An Urban, Start-up Spirit; explore UBCO Programming. c. UBC Welcomes You! (April 26th) A half-day information sessions for all students admitted to the Vancouver campus and their parents. d. Destination UBC (May 22-24) is a full weekend program for high school students who have been admitted to the Okanagan campus. e. Students who did not receive a first round offer or who applied after December 1st are being evaluated for admission. Learn more. P. University of Calgary a. Learn about U of C’s first and second choice options when applying for admission. b. Explore program options. Q. University of Lethbridge: a. High school students and new to post-secondary applicants can apply using the online application form. For additional information about applying to the University of Alberta, please see uab.ca/adm101. b. University of Lethbridge Programs and Degrees R. University of Regina a. Thinking of a Gap Year? The opportunity to work, travel, volunteer, etc. can be very valuable. The U of R has an option for you to consider –click on Gap Year. b. Student Awards and Financial Aid Scholarship Workshops will be held on the following dates in the Main Archer Library, in the Regina Room on Feb 18th , Feb 26th, March 5th, and March 9th. Students and parents are welcome. The SAMS instruction link may also prove helpful if unable to attend in person. c. SAMS (Student Awards Management System) allows students to search and apply online for the U of R scholarships and awards. Deadline of Mar 15th. d. Living Learning Communities – is a group of students with similar interests, values, and academic programs that get together to support one another. f. Housing options are now open for Fall 2020. University Preview Day for Grade 11 Students – May 22nd from 9:30 to 3:00. A great way to participate in sessions and learn more about programs and services. Parents are also welcome to attend. 5
FROM OUR CAREER TEACHER TEAM MARCH 2020 S. University of Saskatchewan a. The deadline for Competitive Entrance Awards is March 1. b. Admission to Agriculture and Bioresources has been extended to May 1. c. U of S College of Engineering has REMOVED CALCULUS 30 as a prerequisite for admission. High School requirements include Pre-Calculus 30, Chemistry 30, and Physics 30. Applications for Fall 2020 are open. Deadline May 1st. c. Learning Communities are a fantastic option which a number of our students have registered for in the past. The Learning Communities involve small groups of students who enroll in a common set of classes. They gather weekly for peer mentor meetings and to study. First year students enrolling in Agriculture and Bioresources, Arts & Science, Engineering and Kinesiology classes are encouraged to apply. Signup begins in May of 2020 for the fall. d. Residence applications for the U of S Fall 2020 are now available. Online tours of Residences are also available at the U of S Residence FB Page. e. Students applying to U of S are required to create an online application file and upload applicable documents. All official documents (transcripts, English Language proficiency etc.) must be sent through mail by the appropriate authority such as the Ministry of Education. f. Indigenous Spend-A-Day – April 3rd. For Grade 10, 11, and 12 Métis, First Nations, and Inuit students. g. University of Saskatchewan Summer Classes give students a head start on their degree program and can lighten the fall academic load. Be sure to contact a U of S Career Counsellor for assistance. h. Edwards School of Business offers a dual credit online course for high school students. The COMM 101.3: Introduction to Business courses provides a university credit and a height school credit. Talk to your Career Counsellor or Principal for further information. T. Saskatchewan Polytechnic a. Grade 12’s interested in one of Saskatchewan Polytechnic’s First Qualified-First Admitted Programs (most of their programs), should apply asap. Check out the 2020- 2021 Viewbook. b. Insight will be held April 1st at all campuses. This is a great chance for students to experience hands-on activities and learn about program offerings. c. Information Nights will be held in Moose Jaw and Saskatoon on March 11th and Prince Albert and Regina on March 12th. Attend for campus tours, presentations, etc. d. Saskatchewan Polytechnic corresponds with students electronically through students’ Saskpolytechnic accounts. So, if you applied and are curious about updates, please check your account regularly. f. Dental Hygiene Advance Diploma This is a 3 year advanced diploma. g. Dual Credits are a way for students to earn high school and SaskPolytechnic Credits at the same time. Talk to your Career Counsellor if interested. 6

Also, the Program Explorer is a great way to match your interests, values and skills with potential programs. i. There have been programming changes to some courses. Find information at the following links: Culinary Arts, Cytotechnology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Medical Laboratory Assistant, Medical Laboratory Technology, and Phlebotomy. j. See the FAQ page of the SaskPoly website for answers to your questions! k. Women In Trades Workshops – Open to all females 15 years and older that are interested in a basic introduction to the skilled trades. Various dates and locations. l. Skills Work! Young Women’s Conference (Grade 9-12) Skills Canada: The conference provides young women who are interested in the skilled trades or technologies with the opportunity to meet with female trade professionals, tour areas of the skills competition, etc. April 3rd. Register in advance. m. Careers in Welding will be held in Regina on April 9th at the Regina Campus. Students and parents will engage in a shop tour, learn about welding occopuations and enjoy a free meal. Register at mypath. l. Step-by-Step Admissions U. Lakeland College: a. Prospective Students Overview – visit this webpage to sign up for student-for-a- day opportunities. Opportunities to attend information and orientation sessions also exist. There are some information sessions being hosted on March 12th in Lloyd and March 13th in Vermillion if interested. Register in advance. V. Lethbridge College: a. Planning to attend Lethbridge College? Check out the Viewbook for 2020-2020! b. Ready to Make your mark? Lethbridge college can help you get started with a 360 Virtual Tour, in-person visit, student spend a day, etc. W. Medicine Hat College: a. Medicine Hat College offers in-person campus tours and group visit options. “Be A Student for A Day” opportunities exist in February and March. Check out the website for details. As well, you can visit MHC virtually! X. Olds College: a. If you missed the Open House, you can tour virtually! b. Upcoming Preview Days are happening in March and April. As such, you are encouraged to research additional opportunities that may be more suited to your life/career planning process. VARIOUS Olds College Preview Days – Must register in advance. March March 20 – Agriculture and Trades April April 3 – Horticulture and Land March 5, 9 Student Awards and Financial Aid Scholarship Workshops at the U of R. These are to help students navigate SAMS. Parents are more than welcome to attend as well. March 10 RCMP Career Presentation, Heritage Centre, Regina March 11 Sask Polytechnic Information Nights. These are offered in Moose Jaw and Saskatoon. Students and parents welcome. March 12 Sask Polytechnic Information Nights. These are offered in Prince Albert and Regina. Students and parents welcome March 12 Lakeland College – Street Rod Technologies. This is a chance to tour the campus, meet instructors, and learn about the program. March 12 Lakeland College Information and Orientation Sessions to be held in March 13 Lloydminster on the 12th and Vermillion on the 13th. Register in advance. March 15 Priority application deadline for University of Regina. Apply by March 15th and they will get front-of-the-line registration and advising, be guaranteed a place in residence and be eligible for entrance awards. Attend to learn more about practices in spas, chiropractic clinics, physiotherapy clinics, massage therapy clinics, fitness facilities, hospitals, senior care homes, etc. April 1 Insight. Note: This newsletter is to inform families of career investigation opportunities. However, post- secondary events and open houses are NOT school sponsored. Thus, your parents must excuse you from school if you plan to attend any of the opportunities advertised in this newsletter. It is highly recommended that parents attend events with their children. Scholarships It is virtually impossible to inform you of all possible scholarship opportunities. However, the fact of that matter is that significant scholarship funding goes untapped each and every year! As students, please take some time to research and investigate possible sources of funding. An investment of time and energy can lead to $$$! Local Scholarships: Each of our Sun West Schools have different local scholarship opportunities, procedures, packages, deadlines, etc. If you are in Grade 12, be sure to inquire with your Principal and/or Career Counsellor for information specific to your school. The Saskatchewan Youth Apprenticeship Industry Scholarships are awarded each year to deserving students who successfully complete the SYA program. Each school can nominate a potential candidate and winners are announced in June. A $1,000 opportunity! April 1 G3 Grow Beyond $4,000 Attend a Canadian High School Big Idea Scholarship Graduating in 2020 Plan on enrolling at a Canadian Post- secondary institution. Create a Video about technology and innovation in Canada’s Agriculture Sector. April 9 Access Scholarship 20 * $1,000 Criteria include volunteerism, grades, and community building. April 15 Sask Tel Indigenous Recognition for To recognize achievement. Nominees Youth Awards of Achievement must be of Aboriginal ancestry, between Excellence 14 and 18 years of age, and have demonstrated outstanding commitment and/or ability in one of 10 categories. April 28 Mary Joyce Booth 2 * $1,500 Available to French as a Second Scholarship Language (FSL) students entering first year of a post-secondary program in the French language. 11

Complete an essay or video on the theme of why I am passionate about agriculture, etc. April 30 Learning Disabilities 3 & 1,000 Must be accepted into a post-secondary Association of program and have a written diagnosis of Saskatchewan a learning disability. Scholarship Reference letters Short question responses. May 17 TransCanada Up to $10,000 Available to students from Canada and Scholarship beyond. Students can answer five questions on their website to see if they pre-qualify. Must be enrolled in a post- secondary institutions, a citizen or permanent resident of Canada, located near TransCanada’s operations or projects, benefit from funding. May 31 4-H Scholarships Various Must be a 4-H member to apply. May 31 Saskatchewan Union of $500 Opent to Grade 12 students who are Nurses Local #11 Bursary enrolled with Kindersley Composite School, Eaton School, Eston Composite School, NWCS, or Westcliffe Composite School. Must complete application in addition to a letter indicating interest in health care field, involvement and/or volunteer work, achievements, future nursing goals, etc. Must be used for an approved registered nursing program. Application available from Principals or Career Counsellors. June 30 Grade 11 Early Entrance $1,000 Min 70% average in certain Grade 11 Awards at Great Plains classes College apply before June 30th September Saskatchewan Regional $1500 Student must have been employed at a 2020 Parks Employee Bursary Annually SK Regional Park in the previous Application summer (ex. These scholarships are for Indigenous students. Scholarship Application Tips: Do your research! There are scholarship opportunities for almost everyone! Some scholarships may require essays, reference letters, etc. Be sure to allow yourself and others time to prepare, edit, revise, etc. any needed documentation. As you start to apply for multiple scholarships, you will soon realize that many of your responses can be tweaked and used again! In addition to Scholarship opportunities, you may want to investigate Student Loans, accessing RESP’s, etc. 13
