DEGREES & FOUNDATION DEGREES English with Creative Writing The English with Creative Writing FdA Degree programme provides students with a combination of academic lectures, discussion seminars, creative writing workshops, individual tutorials and work-related experience. SCARLET SHAFFER "Having concentrated on parenting and working full-time, I saw my son go to university and knew at some point that I wanted to have the same experience. I eased back into studying by completing a one year teaching assistant course and then felt I was ready to move to the next stage. I looked at several courses but thought it might be too overwhelming to attend one of the large universities. When I found Strode College, I was immediately drawn to the fact that it was smaller, and not as daunting as a large university. Strode has a welcoming and very helpful staff team, who have a combination of both expertise and compassion, and all go above and beyond to assist students to find the right course for them. The College has excellent facilities: a common room, quiet study areas and the library. We get together for breaks and lunch, and the catering staff are always friendly, cheerful and helpful. I am a vegan and there is a good range of foods to choose from. As a class, we span all ages. We created a WhatsApp group early on so we can keep in touch and support each other. I have always had a love for the English language and wanted to gain a more rounded knowledge of both ancient and modern literature. I have been able to develop my creative writing and have also learned so much about theatre production, material submission to BBC and how short films and plays are written and produced. I enjoy the lesson content and the range of topics is varied and interesting. So far I have had an enriching and sometimes challenging experience and the course has enabled me to broaden my horizons in terms of poetry, short stories and plays.” 4

CAROLINE BARTER "I had been interested in studying archaeology for a while, so was delighted to discover that Strode College offered a BA (Hons) in History, Heritage and Archaeology. I was a little apprehensive about commencing a degree but, undeterred, I decided to enrol. The tutors are not only very knowledgeable in their fields, but they were generous with their advice and guidance. The small cohort allowed for both personalised tuition and supportive interaction with my peers. In this environment I gained not only knowledge but also confidence in all three fields. The course has opened several doors for me; I am currently employed by South West Heritage Trust and Glastonbury Abbey, and I am an active member of Westbury Society Archaeology Group. Having exceeded my academic expectations and by achieving a First Class Honours, I have been awarded a scholarship by University of Birmingham to study MA International Heritage Management. My work on climate change, which was the focus of my degree dissertation, has also attracted interest from scientists working for the Norwegian government.” COURSES 9
Management (Business) Developing advanced business management skills will significantly enhance your employment opportunities with a diverse range of companies operating in the region and nationally. Higher level skills in people management and organisational operation, as well as a detailed knowledge of marketing and finance will give you a head start in the business world. ED PARKMAN “I chose to study at Strode because it was local and the class sizes were small. The tutors are excellent and know their stuff. I particularly like the College’s friendly atmosphere. It has modern, up-to- date facilities, a small but close knit campus and excellent teaching standards. The teaching staff are fantastic at delivering a subject and helping students to understand where they are going wrong. They are also great at pushing you to the next level and getting you to produce the highest quality work you can. The facilities are fantastic and you are treated like an adult in a very mature environment. I am now topping-up my qualification to a BA (Hons) Business at the University of Plymouth.” 10

HIGHER APPRENTICESHIPS Higher Apprenticeships are a great alternative to university study, offering qualifications towards degree level, no tuition fees and the opportunity to earn while you learn. Higher apprentices typically split their time between college and the workplace. As with other apprenticeships, they are employed throughout and the cost of the fees is shared between government and their employer. In combination with classroom-based learning, HEAA apprentices take part in site visits including this Health & Safety-focused visit with Engie. 20
