UNIVERSITÀ CATTOLICA DEL SACRO CUORE Five Campuses (Milano, Brescia, Piacenza-Cremona, Roma and Campobasso), 14 Colleges, 72 Three-Year Major Tracks (as established by a recent decree), 7 Graduate Level Degrees, 54 Specializations, 47 Master Tracks, and 59 Postgraduate Specialization Courses: such are the basic numbers characterizing the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (Catholic University of the Sacred Heart), founded in 1921 by Father Agostino Gemelli and legally recognized by the Italian State on October 2nd, 1924. During the University's distinguished history, there have been six University Presidents since Father Gemelli: Prof. Francesco Vito, Prof. Ezio Franceschini, Prof. Giuseppe Lazzati, Prof. Adriano Bausola, Prof. Sergio Zaninelli, and the current acting President – Prof. Lorenzo Ornaghi. The Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore is the most comprehensive and complete university in Italy among the universities awarding legally recognized degrees (Italian State Universities included). Our network of Cultural Development Centres extends as far as the Italian islands, making our University definitely national, with the value added of having it recognized by the international scientific community as well. At present the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore is the largest non-State University in Europe as well as the widest Catholic University in the world. Thanks to its prestigious Faculties, the Università Cattolica excels in the diverse and articulate study opportunities that it offers, both in the humanities and in the scientific fields. Through the courses offered which are well combined with intensive research programmes, our University values and promotes an interdisciplinary approach that helps students gain scientific knowledge in a responsible and autonomous fashion. Our extensive research programs are planned and carried out in close connection with the educational activities promoted by our 16 Internal Colleges, 64 Departments and 72 Research Centres. Their common goal is the understanding and studying of those topics that have proved vital to the wellness of each human being: the new frontiers of economics; bioethics; environmental recuperation; developments in the judicial fields; family dynamics; major mass phenomena; the evolution of political systems; new horizons in medicine; technological applications of physics and mathematics; and the most recent discoveries in environmental research. Opportunities for academic development and growth do not by any means end with the confirmation of degrees. Rather, they are continually enhanced through further chances available to alumni already entrenched in their own professional careers, by keeping them in contact with the more than 40,000 enrolled Cattolica students through extra curricular and postgraduate activities. THE “AGOSTINO GEMELLI” FACULTY OF MEDICINE AND SURGERY The "Agostino Gemelli" Faculty of Medicine and Surgery was inaugurated in Rome on November 5th, 1961 under the University First President Professor Francesco Vito. Also in attendance were the then Pontiff, Pope John XXIII, and the then Milan Archbishop, Cardinal Giovanni Battista Montini, who subsequently was to be elected Pontiff himself too as Pope Paul VI. Three years later, on July 10th 1964, the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore became the first Italian University not only to introduce an enrollment cap, but also to open its own working hospital divisions managed under the name of the Policlinico Universitario “Agostino Gemelli” (“A. Gemelli” University Polyclinic & Teaching Hospital). Located at the feet of Monte Mario Hill, the Campus was built following strict Anglo-Saxon canons on land donated in 1934 by Pope Pious XI to the Istituto “Giuseppe Toniolo” di Studi Superiori (“Giuseppe Toniolo” Institute for Higher Studies), an Institution which is the founder as well as the guarantor for the Università 3
Cattolica del Sacro Cuore. Those beautiful 37 hectars, situated next to the Parco Regionale del Pineto, are home to dormitories, libraries, specially equipped classrooms, a Church, sport and recreational facilities, and other student services. The "Istituti Biologici” (Biological Institutes) is a big building where main student offices, teaching rooms for 1st Cycle Medical Studies as well as Basic Science Institutes and the Aula Magna are located. The Campus includes the “Residenza Sanitaria Protetta” (Protected Health Residence), inaugurated in the jubilee year 2000, a modern and comfortable 43 room-hotel comprising a hemodialisys centre. The “A. Gemelli” Faculty of Medicine and Surgery is at present a world-class training ground for future leaders in medical research and practice - including every modern medical discipline as well as some of the most respected medical scholars all over the world - public health, and biomedical science. Primary Education of General Practitioners and Nurses, training of Health Care Specialists and Public Health Professionals, and further education of the whole Health Care Staff are the Faculty’s primary tasks. Starting medical studies and enrolling in one of 2nd Level Degree Courses or into one of the 21 1st Level Degrees, means becoming part of an academic community in which learning takes place in a daily and direct contact with the outside working environment. UNIVERSITY SYSTEM Higher Education in Italy is organized in four different stages: Undergraduate degree/Bachelor of Science BSc (“Laurea Triennale”) Awarded after a three-year course of study and aims to provide a solid foundation in the core subjects as well as more specialized, professional training. During the third year, the student is usually expected to acquire work experience by doing an internship. For some degree programs, the student can choose from a range of different curricula. The degree is awarded after the accumulation of 180 ECTS and students can either enter the job market or continue their studies by applying for a Master of Science program or a Specializing master Graduate degree/Master of Science - MSc (“Laurea Specialistica/Magistrale”) The Master of Science is awarded after two years of graduate studies for a total of 120 ECTS. It aims to provide rigorous, advanced training in more highly specialized areas. It is important to note that some specific study courses, such as Dentristry or Medicine, are made up of a single cycle of five/six years. Specializing Master (“Master Universitario”) Students having completed a BSc or an MSc can enroll in a one-year Specializing Master. The “Master Universitario” focuses on specific topics and aims at providing practical professional skills to fresh graduates or professionals wanting to develop specific professional competences. Master’s courses are mostly run on a full-time basis, but UCSC also offers a number of part-time courses for professionals who wish to keep working during their studies. Doctoral Program - PhD (“Dottorato di Ricerca”) A PhD is awarded after three additional years of study and aims to develop the professional competence to carry out high level research in manufacturing and service companies, public bodies and universities. In order to enter a Doctoral Program a candidate must have achieved the Master of Science degree or an equivalent graduate degree. 4

The receipt of registered post together with the original of your expired residence permit or entry visa, if it is the first issue, will allow you to travel to your own country in specific periods of the year determined and regulated by immigration authorities. Upon submitting your application to the post office counter you will receive a slip asking you to report to the Questura on a given date, bringing your photographs. If this is your first time in Italy, you will be fingerprinted, too. The electronic residence permit is a magnetic card similar to a credit card which contains a microchip and a machine-readable magnetic stripe in which the card holder's personal details, photograph and fingerprints are stored in digital format.
