2021 Term 2 - 30 April Principal’s Reflection - Joanne Rock I hope you all enjoyed the Easter break and return to the new term full of energy and enthusiasm. After such a busy Term 1, it was a well-earned break for everyone. It was a lovely sight to see all of our students return looking happy and relaxed, ready to get into all the different activities Term 2 has to offer. The lovely autumn weather is a joy at the mo- ment, making outside activities especially enjoyable. Our Parent/Teacher interviews rounded off Term 1 nicely, with many productive discussions had. The importance of the par- ent/school partnership cannot be overstated – when school and home work together in a collaborative and positive way, the benefits to the student is enormous. I hope the blended format of face to face and remote interviews worked well for you, in spite of the technical hitch at the very start of the remote interviews caused by an unnoticed upgrade of our SIMON soft- ware. Thank you to the parents who alerted us to this, and for your patience whilst we got things back on track. The ability to offer both formats allows for more flexibility and convenience for parents, hopefully translating to more engagement, more conversations and more improvement. Our students proudly represented the College at ANZAC Day services held in Benalla, Euroa and Mansfield last week by lay- ing a wreath on our behalf. Lily Cooke also took part in the dawn ANZAC service in Benalla by reading the poem, ‘We not comply and do not have a note from home explaining the Shall Keep the Faith’. Reflection - Year 7 Art Gallery Excursion On Thursday 22 April, we went on an excursion to the Benalla Art Gallery, which was honestly pretty fun! We had a tour guide named Shanley who was a Curator and Educational Officer at the Gallery. I’ve always been interested in the inspiration behind artworks and how the image came into mind, so this really had me thinking! Some of us even got to go into the back room where most of the 1500 artworks at the gallery are kept! Overall, it was a really interesting experience, and it was great to learn about the history of the Gallery and Benalla itself. Thanks Ms Hayes! - Solomon Birthisel Year 10 Debate Year 10Y held their debate this week. The topic was “Being famous is good.” Chairperson: Georgia O’Brien Timer: Poppy Seja Affirmative Team: Ethan Scipione Amelie Maslan Meggan Thompson Negative Team: Billie-Anne Mitchell Riley Woolley Danica Meyer Both teams prepared very thoroughly and followed the pro- tocols of formal debating, which we have been learning about in our unit on Persuasive Language. The level of logical argu- ment was very high, as was the strong rebuttals that both teams formulated. Students learned about the importance of teamwork in debating, as well as the need to think on your feet and present confidently through the spoken word and body language. The debate was narrowly won by the negative team. Best speaker of the debate was Danica Meyer. We look forward to more debates and are making plans to begin a Debating Club at FCJ College. Farewell Jan Morgan State Junior Lawn Bowls Welcome readers to the School Sport Victoria Secondary Junior Bowls State Fi- nals for 2021 at the sunny Club Sunbury. Many of the state’s top junior lawn bowl athletes are amongst the schools repre- sented who have made it through to see who will take out the prestigious title of State Cham- pion. We have been greeted by a standout list of teams but nothing compared to our sensational team of Maddison Marin, Zander Newham and leading the team, Skipper Koby Cromie. VCAL Numeracy As part of the VCAL numeracy course, students are completing a new course to FCJ College called VCE Founda- tion Mathematics Units 1 and 2. This is a VCAA approved course where students learn key knowledge and skills in a practical context. In Term One, students learned about Shape, Space and Design through investigating the particular shapes and designs in the new Multipurpose Hall. This practical element was complemented with theoretical skills and making 2D and 3D models of polygons and prisms out of various materials. In Term Two, the Area of Study is Patterns and Number where students are learning about key Financial Skills for a young person entering into the world beyond secondary schooling. Our fist key speaker was FCJ College Business Manager Mark McDonald who focused on Taxation. Mr McDonald spoke initially about entering the workforce, the importance of having a job and the satisfaction it provides to one’s wellbeing and family, the purpose of taxation and the important contribution each person makes to maintaining and sustaining a community, personal taxation, pensions and superannuation. Grayson Kirk thanked Mr McDonald on behalf of the class and welcomed him back for further questions as the term progressed. Future speakers will include representatives from Bendigo Bank, past students talking through budgeting and living out of home and members of the community in real estate, accounting and finance. – Mr Joe Mount admin@fcjbenalla.catholic.edu.au 36 ARUNDEL ST BENALLA enquiries: 5762 1222
Modelling Atoms - Year 9 Science In this activity we built a physical model of an atom and described its parts and properties using a poster. The activity was very interesting as it allowed us to make the model of an element in our own ways. We used different items including play dough, pipe cleaners, ribbon, plasticine, beads, seeds, buttons, pop- sicle sticks, wool, craft paper, polystyrene balls, wire, balloons, poster paper, masking tape, string and paper plates. Alongside the model we drew out a poster to match the element we made, this helped us understand more about the periodic table and put into practice our research. We liked this task as it expanded our knowl- edge about the periodic table in a non-textbook way and this helped in our understanding of elements better. Also it was fun as we really enjoyed it especially since we were with our friends in the group. :) By Tammanie Robinson and Lily McLean admin@fcjbenalla.catholic.edu.au 36 ARUNDEL ST BENALLA enquiries: 5762 1222

Literacy Hub Update 30/4/2021 Welcome back everyone. The library is much more than just a place to store ‘the books’. We strive to create an environment where everyone is welcomed and feels safe. We have been lucky enough to have started two clubs during different lunchtimes to provide different elements of interest for students. The first is an old favourite - Chess Club. Students can play games against each other or Mr Dooley and try to enhance their skills. Normally this is just a Monday but students are keen and can play any recess or lunch time of the week. Our second club is the Pokémon Club. This is the wonderful idea of Year 7 student, Cameron Mackrell, who not only came up with the idea, but created flyers, displayed them around the school and ran the club. Well done Cameron. This is a club that will grow in interest as people learn more about the intriguing world of Pokémon! CBCA Book of the year - yet another contender for book of the year is from the well-known author Garth Nix. The Left-Handed booksellers of London is a true Garth Nix speciality, full of magic, apparitions, parallel universes, and strange creatures. While the main protagonist, Susan, firstly appears to be from this world, her search for her father leads her into a chaotic fight between magical fighting booksellers who police the mythical Old World of England and the evil entity trying to claim the leadership from Susan’s ancient ruling father, an old sole from many centuries ago. With the help of the dashing Merlin, who is on his own quest to find who murdered his mother, and his level-headed sister, Vivien, Susan is drawn into the clash of the two entities and her own magical powers are uncovered, leading to all sorts of mayhem. For those who love the writing style of Garth Nix, The Left-Handed booksellers of London will not disappoint. Enjoy!
